Casting aside her high-profile career to open her own practice, lawyer Val Covington finds herself attracted to her mysterious and intriguing new landlord, Rob Smith, and must rely on his help to prove innocence of her assistant's lover who has been accused of a crime he did not commit. Original.
Mary Jo Putney was born on 1946 in Upstate New York with a reading addiction, a condition for which there is no known cure. After earning degrees in English Literature and Industrial Design at Syracuse University, she did various forms of design work in California and England before inertia took over in Baltimore, Maryland, where she has lived very comfortably ever since.
While becoming a novelist was her ultimate fantasy, it never occurred to her that writing was an achievable goal until she acquired a computer for other purposes. When the realization hit that a computer was the ultimate writing tool, she charged merrily into her first book with an ignorance that illustrates the adage that fools rush in where angels fear to tread.
Fortune sometimes favors the foolish and her first book sold quickly, thereby changing her life forever, in most ways for the better. (“But why didn't anyone tell me that writing would change the way one reads?”) Like a lemming over a cliff, she gave up her freelance graphic design business to become a full-time writer as soon as possible.
Since 1987, Ms. Putney has published twenty-nine books and counting. Her stories are noted for psychological depth and unusual subject matter such as alcoholism, death and dying, and domestic abuse. She has made all of the national bestseller lists including the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USAToday, and Publishers Weekly. Five of her books have been named among the year’s top five romances by The Library Journal. The Spiral Path and Stolen Magic were chosen as one of Top Ten romances of their years by Booklist, published by the American Library Association.
A nine-time finalist for the Romance Writers of America RITA, she has won RITAs for Dancing on the Wind and The Rake and the Reformer and is on the RWA Honor Roll for bestselling authors. She has been awarded two Romantic Times Career Achievement Awards, four NJRW Golden Leaf awards, plus the NJRW career achievement award for historical romance. Though most of her books have been historical, she has also published three contemporary romances. The Marriage Spell will be out in June 2006 in hardcover, and Stolen Magic (written as M. J. Putney) will be released in July 2006.
Ms. Putney says that not least among the blessings of a full-time writing career is that one almost never has to wear pantyhose.
I'm going to finish this audio simply because I paid so much for it. I am not enjoying it very much and it's making my already sour mood even worse. It's preachy beyond all reason and I'm finding myself doing so much eye rolling it's a wonder I've managed to avoid hitting another unsuspecting driver.
To sum up events thus far:
The heroine is a corporate lawyer who is feeling burned out and fears she's going to die inside if she doesn't give up fighting for the "fat cats". As luck would have it she inherits a windfall of a million bucks (how come this stuff never happens to ME?) and decides to give up the high paying partnership for "do-gooder" work. She takes along her trusty para-legal and who just so happens to have an ex-lover in the clinker facing death-row. Ah huh! This is heroine's chance to do some good. So this corporate lawyer immediately takes on this difficult criminal case and hires a carpenter who was a marine in his younger days to assist her. Huh? Am I hearing this wrong? It simply is not making sense to me. . .
Later: Okay, I finally finished this audio. If I hadn't paid for it I honestly would have put it aside but I'm a glutton for punishment and listened to it until the all tied up with a nice ribbon ending. I've enjoyed Mary Jo Putney's work in the past and was surprised at the lack of connection I felt to any of these characters. The love story took a back seat to a whole lot of preachiness about the death penalty and the importance of finding spiritual happiness. I felt like I had been walloped upside the head about the evils of our justice system and was rather put off by the whole thing. The only part I somewhat enjoyed was the relationship between the heroine and her "little sister" but even that developed a little too quickly as the heroine managed to break through the kids defenses in what seemed like only two visits. This isn't a book I'd enjoy re-reading as I felt very bored throughout most of it and have sent it on its way.

There is no secret that I'm a fan of Mary Jo's historical romance writings, An imperfect process happens to be my very first young adult / contemporary story written by this author. This book was a good surprise for me.
33 years old lawyer Valentine Covington decides to start practice "do-gooder law," on her own . Her first and most important case is to save Daniel Monroe, who is on Death Row for a crime he didn't commit. Not only that , but he is Kendra's former lover and the father of her son Jason.Kendra is also Val's assistant. Rob Smith is a carpenter who ran away from his past many years ago and tries to have a normal life and remain undercover. He decides to help Val with Monroe's case hoping that this will save him from the guilt that he wasn't there to protect his younger brother , who also received death penalty along time ago. I like that the book follows multiple stories and isn't focused on Val and Rob's relationship. The most important thing the the book is to save Daniel and not the couple. There isn't really any plot twists but my heart skipped a beat when Lyssie told Val about how her father killed her mother and a cop but the story didn't went how I thought it would.
Twist of Fate is #3 in the Circle of Friends series, but it stands very well on its own. This book features Val Covington, a lawyer who has just made partner at her corporate law firm. Feeling restless, she decides to open her own firm so she can work on cases that really matter and make a difference. While shopping for office space for her new practice, she meets Rob Smith and they fall quickly in lust. Her first case is Daniel Monroe, a man on death row for killing a cop, and who claims he is innocent. The hunt for new evidence and the question of whether they can save Daniel's life is the driver for the suspense. Overall, I enjoyed this romantic suspense.
The 1st half of the book was good; interesting characters, plot, dialogue, etc. Then the 2nd half slowed waaaaay down. I solved the puzzle very early and was, like, 'hurry up and search'. Jeez. My least favorite of this series.
Each book in this series wraps a romance around an issue. This one was quite moving, even if I didn't like it quite as well as the second book in the series.
4.5 stars! I liked this 30+ y/o female lawyer who, under the advisement of her paralegal Kendra, decides to ditch the law practice for a chance to use her windfall to open her own practice. She has the opportunity to do pro bono work and start over. I liked Val. I appreciated that she is commitment phobic due to her father not being around and her mother's less than stellar past with men. She is independent and in search of something more.
I liked that the two women were starting out together. Rob is the mysterious carpenter with a secret from his past that works well with the story. The underlying theme of the fairness of capital punishment plays out as they race against time to prove that Daniel Monroe, an inmate on Death Row, is actually innocent. They work together and along the way they fall in love. I liked Rob; he was a good foil for Val. He was not afraid of commitment, though I felt that he rushed things a bit. He got a chance to make peace with his past and show another side to the capital punishment debate.
I found this story absorbing, and there were some mild sexy scenes. There were many relationships in this story. Val finds out that she is capable of more than she thought. Her ability to try new things and connect with a girl showed her development. She was more than a lawyer by the end. She was part of her parents and very much herself. She had her career and now a lot of good people in her life without giving up any of herself.
I did dock it half a star because there was a major element that I realized early on that was not discovered until much later. And that didn't seem quite reasonable to me. It seemed as if the characters would have picked up on it much sooner.
It was interesting that she was a Quaker and was looking to fill that void again. After her 'journey' for justice and all of her recent changes, it is not so surprising that she'd want to start to look within and a bit of it is mentioned, but not a lot.
Note: I received a review copy from eBook Discovery Read and Review Club. This is my honest opinion. This is the first book in this series that I've read. I'm glad that I got the chance to read it as it was more than a romance and a suspenseful story.
I appreciate the fact this book is very well written.
I appreciate the fact that the plot is designed to make the reader want to continue reading in order to find out what happens next.
I liked the character development. Val and Rob are two people who are admirable and interesting. Val is leaving her high paying corporate law firm in order to open up her own office and do good in the world. Rob is trying to stay under the world's radar in order to escape a past that has wounded him and changed his life in the extreme.
The secondary characters are equally well developed. Kendra, Val's assistant is especially fascinating. She has so many facets which made me want to know much more about her.
But, for me the book had too much description and not enough action.
This is a story about the evils of the death penalty. And also the fact that in the American justice system there are many people who are falsely convicted of a crime. I agree that those are both important ideas. I was disappointed that it seemed to me that these two themes became bogged down in a lot of secondary stories.
If you are looking for a novel that has a theme that encourages each of us to consider justice for our fellowman, this is the book for you.

I liked the whole premise behind this story, but I have huge issues with the amount of typos/misspellings/punctuation errors throughout the book. When someones name is Al and multiple times it seems to be typed in as A1 (number one) it gets a bit annoying. That is just one example. I liked the story and really liked Rob, but I had a hard time connecting with Val. It seemed like she was kind of all over the place about what to do and her feelings to where it was kind of hard to keep up. I also recommend getting more information on Quaker's because I don't know much about them and it seemed like I needed to know a bit more to understand some of the things in the book. Overall the story for the book was OK, but there was a lot of errors that made it less enjoyable to read.
This is no great work of literature, but I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it because of one main reason--the story is set in Baltimore, but more specifically in the areas and neighborhoods I frequent regularly. Putney gives details about places that I know well, such as Friends School, the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen, the Hamilton area, etc. I even know a church-turned-into-office that is very much like the building Val purchases in the book. This made it great fun to read. The story becomes a bit far-fetched and over-the-top as it progresses, but I liked the main characters. It made for a great escape during some pretty dull car rides.
I received this book from eBook Discovery in exchange for an honest review. Wow! Wow! Absolutely loved the story and chemistry between Rob and Val. Val is a character I always love to see in a book. She is strong, speaks her mind and very level headed. I wasn't expecting the compelling and intense story of Daniel. I became a warrior champion of him. With each chapter I was rooting for him and so drawn to his story. If you want a book that has romance, suspense and great characters this is it.
Also published as Twist of Fate part of the Circle of Friends Trilogy. SYNOPSIS: Rob Smith is the kind of guy--and lawyer--Val Covington knows she should avoid: mysterious, handsome, haunted. But when he tries to help her save a man from being executed, she discovers long hidden secrets-along with an irresistible passion.
I received this book from eBook Discovery in exchange for an honest review. A very addictive book where people and mystery is mixed in a mixture that keeps you enthralled until the last page. The characters are well defined, strong with strong story that will keep you entertained. A book what you will love!
This book was very well written. It is about the journey of several people involved in trying to get a condemned man free after 17 years.I loved the book as it really showed the emotional state of all involved. Then it had some other issues to round the whole story out. I received this book free in exchange for an honest review.
Very good storyline. Well written. Couldn't put the book down. Needed to know what was going to happen. Rooted for the good guys all the way through. Great character development. Liked the little subplots and resolutions within the main story.
For a while, I would find one author and then read every book I could borrow. Ms. Putney was one of these authors. Back in the day, anytime I saw her name I'd read the book. They are consistently well written. Good romance, no erotica... unfortunately a bit forgettable.
Good book with meaningful argument that capital punishment is wrong because innocent people are killed a high percentage of the time. Always believed that and this book validated my concerns.
This book seemed heavy handed. There were too many conveniences and it just didn't flow right. It felt like I was reading text, not being told a story.
Definitely one of her earlier efforts. Not terrible, but not great either. A very interesting look at the effects of capital punishment on the families of the convicted.
