I would like to thank Netgalley and Bonnier Zaffre for a review copy of Under The Ice, the second novel to feature Cologne based Detective Superintendent Judith Krieger.
The novel essentially has two strands, Judith's private investigation while on leave into the disappearance of her old school friend, Charlotte Simonis and Detective Inspector Manfred "Manni" Korzilius's investigation into missing teenager Jonny Röbel.
Initially I wasn't too keen on this and found it a bit of drag. The novel constantly changes point of view, not just between Manni and Judith but other characters as well, often in the middle of chapters so it is confusing and disruptive to the flow of the novel. It also seems chock full of unimportant details which take some wading through. All this changes about half way through when the detectives start to make headway and it becomes a tense, lean read well worth the wait.
The novel works as a standalone with a clearly defined plot and a linear narrative. I think, however, in terms of the characterisation it would have been better if I'd read the previous novel, Silent is the Forest" before embarking on this one as its events would have cast more light on why Manni was transferred from Homicide to Missing Persons and why Judith requested a long leave of absence.
When the plot got going I enjoyed it. It is well thought out and has a few surprises along the way. I also liked the characterisation where no one is a paragon and everyone has faults. Ms Klönne does a good job on her characters' thought processes which seem natural and easy to understand in that you could see your own mind working the same way.
There is a subplot about playground bullying. Ms Klönne does not pull her punches at its viciousness and its victim's feeling of helplessness. I notice that the novel was originally published in 2006 when social media was in its infancy so fortunately we are spared the trolling which happens nowadays but it is still nasty. It's not easy to be different in modern society.
Under the Ice is an interesting read which I'm glad I persevered with. 3.5*.

"Dos protagonistas que se conocen y dos casos que no tienen ningún vínculo entre sí. Me decepcionó un poco esa falta de nexo porque una investigación eclipsa a la otra. Es más, ni siquiera tiene sentido la forma de desarrollar determinados aspectos. A la trama le cuesta arrancar y los descubrimientos tardan en llegar, aunque, en términos generales, la lectura es más o menos llevadera. Lamentablemente, sé que es una historia que olvidaré a corto plazo".

La puntuación real sería un 2,5/5. No redondeo al alza porque, incluso al acabar, no le vi un propósito claro a una de las dos tramas y eso me dejó una sensación muy agridulce.

Mmmmm. Nowhere near Hilary or French. Started well,but lost steam and the end-and both mysteries solve-was definitively underwhelming. Quite slow too.
Well rounded characters, so I might give #3 a try.

Under the Ice by Gisa Klonne features Judith Krieger and Manni Korzillius, both of whom were involved in a previous case that did not end happily.
Judith has taken a leave of absence and has only a short time before returning to work, when she is contacted by an old school mate about the disappearance of another school friend, Charlotte Simonis. Judith reluctantly agrees to look into Charlotte's disappearance during the short time remaining on her leave. As Judith becomes more invested in the case, she finds herself agreeing to a trip to Canada.
Manni is assigned to the case of a missing fourteen-year-old school boy. Jonny Robel's disappearance from a camp doesn't provide much to go on, but Manni thinks the father is hiding something. The case becomes more twisted as it proceeds, and Manni desperately hopes to find the boy alive.
Some themes are tackled indirectly--aging, loneliness, and isolation--while school bullying enters into both investigations.
This is the third in a series, and I don't know if they have all been translated from the German, but the characters and plots in this novel kept my interest and the themes are universal and pertinent.

Un 4 alto, pero como tiene la media tan baja he decidido ser benevolente con el redondeo...
Me ha gustado mucho la historia. Hay muchos giros inesperados y en general es poco predecible. Trata de manera secundaria temas muy duros e importantes, como el acoso escolar, la soledad de la vejez (o de la infancia), la relación padre-hijo...
Al principio va un poquito lento, pero bueno.
Debe haber libros anteriores de la misma saga, porque de vez en cuando hablan de una aventura anterior. Así que si os gusta mirarlo y no hagáis como yo XD. Aunque no hace falta leer el anterior para entender este.

Me ha parecido entretenida, una historia de un crimen en el que nos presentan diferentes hilos de historias de distintos personajes. Sin embargo para mí estos hilos se unen demasiado tarde, hay que leer más de la mitad del libro para que las historias se entremezclen, a mi personalmente esto no me ha gustado. Además alguna historia me han parecido de relleno, por ello le doy un 2/5.

Detective Judith Krieger is on vacation and takes on the task of trying to locate a missing woman and her old friend Charlotte Simonis while Manfred “Manni” Korzilius is called to the frantic parents of a missing fourteen-year old boy named Jonny Robel.
This book takes on some difficult subjects such as school bullying. It is a study in the grief of those left behind whether it is due to someone missing or someone has died. It takes an interesting psychological point of view of the detectives, the parents, the friends and so on. It seems everyone has secrets and has something to hide.
This book seems a little unconnected in places. Perhaps it would have helped if I had read the previous book in this series. It has differing points of view which generally I like, but it seems to switch without warning and I’m left going “huh?” It is well written and plotted however, so the transition issue is not too big a problem. This is my first Gisa Klonne novel and I believe I’ll look into her other book in this series. I enjoyed the novel.

November 16, 2022Die über ihre Ausdrucksweise transportierten Ansichten der Autorin stossen mich ab.
Die Hauptkommissarin ist unsympathisch, schon allein, weil sie raucht.
Ich habe den Eindruck, dass ihr Rauchen verherrlicht wird ( "wie das Nikotin in der Lunge prickelt" ).
Das Verhalten der alten Frau zu Beginn ist unglaubwürdig. Hunde werden als Köter bezeichnet, Kinder verächtlich als Rotzlöffel und Brut.
Als dann auch noch die Bemerkung kam, dass Leute, die ihr Wasser zu Hause selbst aufsprudeln Geizhälse sind, habe ich das Buch entsorgt.
Das ist absolut kein Buch für gesundheits- und umweltbewußte Leser. Null Sterne.

An effortless read, translated brilliantly and full to the brim with intrigue and suspense. a great crime thriller with proper twists and turns that really do leave you guessing.
Set in Germany and Canada I felt that Gisa Klönne captured the essence of both perfectly.
Despite the book being somewhere in a series, the characters were easy to follow and reading Under the Ice had just made me want to read the prequels to it!
Highly recommended!

Ha estado bastante bien y me he entretenido. Me ha gustado mucho que haya sido a cuatro voces las lecturas. Eso sí se ve a mitad del libro como uno de los misterios de puede entrever quién ha sido, y el otro pues creo que se ha resuelto sin mucha solvencia, apresurado y sin ningún sentido, esto se ve en la última página. Pero está bastante bien.

Me gustó mucho. Primera vez que leo algo de ésta autora. Me gusta su forma de escribir, clara, concisa. Con una gran destreza en manejar los temas de actualidad y lo psicológico dentro del Thriller. Por algo la llaman la reina de la novela negra alemana!!!. Muy recomendable!!!

Kurz bevor Kommissarin Judith Krieger nach einer sechsmonatigen Auszeit wieder an ihren Arbeitsplatz bei der Kölner Kripo zurückkehrt, erreicht sie die Bitte eines ehemaligen Mitschülers, bei der Suche nach einer gemeinsamen Klassenkameradin von früher zu helfen. Charlotte Simonis wurde seit Wochen nicht gesehen, weder in der düsteren Villa, die sie nach dem Tod der Eltern alleine bewohnt, noch am Arbeitsplatz. Lediglich eine Postkarte aus Kanada könnte einen Hinweis darstellen, wo sie sich aufhält.
Judiths Kollege Manni Korzilius, mit dem sie im ersten Band der Reihe gemeinsam ermittelt hat, arbeitet mittlerweile bei der Abteilung "Vermisste Personen" und wird beauftragt, das Verschwinden des vierzehnjährigen Jonathan zu untersuchen, von dem plötzlich jede Spur fehlt. 50 Kilometer entfernt findet eine alte Dame gleichzeitig einen toten Dackel. Sollte Jonnys Stiefvater, der den Jungen und seinen Hund nicht unbedingt ins Herz geschlossen hatte, etwas damit zu tun haben? Liegt der Schlüssel in dem Indianercamp, in dem Jonny häufig unterwegs war, oder in der Tatsache, dass Jonny in der Schule Schwächere vor Mobbing und Rüpeleien zu schützen versuchte?
In ihrem zweiten Buch sind Manni und Judith also auf getrennten Wegen zugange, jeder auf der Suche nach einem verschwundenen Menschen. Gemeinsam ist den beiden Fällen, dass sie den Ermittlern auch persönlich an die Nieren gehen - Manni, der stets nach der Anerkennung seines jähzornigen Vaters strebte und sie nie bekam, Judith, die heute noch ein schlechtes Gewissen hat wegen ihres Verhaltens gegenüber Charlotte in der Schulzeit.
So richtig sympathisch sind mir beide nicht direkt geworden - dafür ist mir Manni zu schnoddrig, auch wenn die Einblicke in seinen familiären Hintergrund und seine Gefühlswelt Mitgefühl wecken, und Judith deutlich zu spröde - dennoch oder vielleicht gerade deshalb fand ich beide Figuren gut gezeichnet.
Die Fälle, die die beiden zu lösen versuchen, sind spannend geschildert, viele kleine Puzzleteilchen aus diversen Perspektiven werden zusammengetragen, die Erzählweise im Präsens war zunächst leicht gewöhnungsbedürftig, bringt die Handlung aber noch näher an den Leser heran. Manche Kleinigkeiten wirkten auf mich zwar ein wenig weit hergeholt oder unglaubwürdig (so habe ich mich gefragt, ob ein 14jähriger Junge tatsächlich noch in großem Stil Indianer spielen würde), und der Eistaucher, von dem immer wieder die Rede ist und der auch das Cover ziert, wurde für meinen Geschmack ein bisschen zu oft als Symbolträger bemüht, davon abgesehen aber ein fesselnder Krimi mit realistischem Hintergrund.

Onder het ijs is de tweede misdaadroman die in Nederland is verschenen van de Duitse auteur Gisa Klönne. Haar debuutroman was getiteld ‘En het woud zwijgt’. In dit boek introduceerde ze haar speurdersduo Manni Korzilius en Judith Krieg.
Het eerste boek heb ik niet gelezen, maar ik denk wel, dat er iets is gebeurd, waar de schrijfster af en toe naar teruggrijpt in dit boek. Hoofdcommissaris Judith Krieg komt na een lang verlof terug bij de politie in Keulen. Commissaris Manni Korzilius is op een zijspoor gezet bij de afdeling ‘Vermiste personen’.
Een veertienjarige jongen, Jonny, een gymnasiast, is verdwenen met zijn hond Dr. D tijdens een soort indianenkamp. Terwijl Manni bezig is om deze vermissing uit te zoeken, is Judith op verzoek van een vriend van Charlotte, die ook een vroeger klasgenootje van Judith was, naar Canada vertrokken om haar daar te zoeken. Er is al een tijd niets van Charlotte vernomen. Judith heeft er nog steeds schuldgevoelens over, dat zij Charlotte links liet liggen, toen ze jonger waren. Charlotte is biologe en erg geïnteresseerd in de Canadese ijsduiker, een vogel, die volgens een mythe duiken tussen het rijk van de doden en de wereld van de levenden. Als Judith daar aankomt, klikt het gelijk tussen haar en een man, die tochten organiseert met zijn vliegtuigje naar de wildernis. Ze werkt zich hiermee echter erg in de nesten. Als er dan een tweede jongen wordt vermist in Keulen, wordt de druk opgevoerd om de jongens te vinden. Manni werkt dag en nacht. Gelukkig is Judith heelhuids uit Canada teruggekomen. Samen met Manni proberen ze de zaak van de vermiste jongens op te lossen.
Ook in Onder het ijs wordt er weer een jongen gepest, Tim, een vriend van Jonny. Pesten heeft zoveel impact op een kind, dat het in zijn latere leven er nog last van heeft. De gevoelen van onmacht worden goed beschreven door Gisa Klönne. Zij heeft een boeiend misdaadverhaal geschreven. Het duo Judith Krieg en Manni Korzilius van de Keulse recherche is echt de moeite waard om te volgen. Gisa Klönne komt op mijn lijst met favoriete auteurs, dat is zeker.

Het duo Judith Krieg en Manni Korzilius van de Keulse recherche is echt de moeite waard om te volgen. Gisa Klönne komt op mijn lijst met favoriete auteurs, dat is zeker.

Al pasar las páginas estos personajes se van conectando y uno llega a entender el significado de sus palabras, lo que sienten y lo que los motiva a seguir adelante.
Klonne aborda el tema del bullying abarcando todos sus aspectos y la importancia de prevenirlo y detenerlo para las nuevas generaciones.
