Home to Alaska. To her ex-husband. Her family. And the babies waiting to be born

Midwife Francesca Walcott has plenty of good reasons to stay away from Alaska. Her ex-husband, Charlie Marcus, for one. Her family, for another. Thirty years ago she chose to marry Charlie over her family's objections. They haven't forgiven her or spoken to her since.

Now she's come home to Alaska because Mia, a midwife, friend and former apprentice, has been found dead. She's left Francesca her estate: a house in Talkeetna, a mine and forty-three sled dogs.

Suddenly there are more reasons to stay in Alaska than to leave. The mystery surrounding Mia's death. The mothers and babies who need her skills as a midwife. The hope of reconciling with her family. And above all, Charlie. The man who's somehow connected to everything in her life. The man who she used to love and still does.

Master storyteller Margot Early has known from a very young age that she was born into her vocation. Storytelling has been part of her life since she was a child—whether plotting Nancy Drew cases in the basement of Palo Alto, California’s historic Squire House, pretending to live in trees (while climbing them) or tapping the keys of an ancient manual typewriter, writing stories to share with friends.

One of her most vivid and joyful childhood memories is when she realized she could read and interrupted a bridge party to display her knowledge. A writer from the age of nine or ten, she has always had an audience—her friends, sisters and parents listening to what she wrote.

A friend and fellow journalist once told her that she was a circle—perfect. The very full circle of Margot Early’s life has included some tough times, which she knows have made her a better and more insightful writer.

Early, who owns neither a car nor a television, believes her greatest wealth is her friends—and she’s glad to count many relatives among them. Living in a town of four hundred, high in Colorado’s San Juan Mountains, she enjoys the outdoors, dancing, spinning dog hair and spending time with her pets, which include German shepherds, snakes and tarantulas.

3½ Stars ~ This is the third in Ms. Early's The Midwives series. While it does read well as a stand alone, I think most readers would find a deeper pleasure if reading this following You Were on My Mind and Talking About My Baby. The first two books are the stories of Ivy and Tara, Francesca's daughters who share an extra special bond as midwives.

The book synopsis summarizes the general plot very well. Francesca is 52 and is forced to come to terms with her past and all her regrets, regrets that mostly involve her ex-husband, Charlie. Charlie is a glacier pilot in Alaska, a war veteran, full of his own demons and regrets. This story is Francesca and Charlie finally opening doors to face demons and through the benefit of hindsight realize their own role in the end of their marriage.

Ms Early uses many different POVs, including from members of Francesca's estranged family and also flashbacks to moments that helped define how they came to where they are. As Charlie and Francesca seek answers to the missing woman Mia, the buried secrets all come out. The characters are flawed, have insecurities and carry resentments. Francesca's return to hometown in Alaska after more than 20 years away, shakes up not only her and the safe life she has made for herself, but her estranged family and all the secrets they keep. Charlie's thrilled to finally have her home, but afraid to forgive past mistakes, not just Francesca's but his own. This story is written much in the way of a saga and is beautifully tied in to the earlier books in this series. I recommend reading them all in the order published. Ms Early gifts us with a lovely epilogue that brings all the characters from the three books together.

Really weird writing style. Couldn't get into it so didn't finish it. From what I gather this is a man and woman who married young and have been divorced for nearly 20 years. Both are in their 50's and from what I read the husband came back from Nam with PTSD, became a drunk, the wife cheated and they split.
