If I didn’t have a love for villains vs villains this would have gotten 3 stars the writing was good not great the art was bad. There was no real conclusions except for the one character I didn’t care about.

Reminds me of The Sopranos. Hoods family life vs his life of crime. A big dive into who these crooks that surround him are. Not too much into White Fang and Force who oppose him, but The Controller and Dormammu who want to.. control him.
Favorite part: the 2 crooks who keep getting startled by Hood right after they talk about him.
I wouldnt call this essential Dark Reign, as its mostly a story of how hard of a life The Hood has.

"Dark Reign: The Hood"

Dark Reign: the Hood is one of the tie-ins that focusses on one of the DR-main characters. Bullseye/Hawkeye and Venom/Spider-man where very funny stories : psychopats running free as superheroes. Don't take it to serious. The Hood has an entirely different angle, this is a more 'serious' story. The Hood is not displayed as the sociopath he seems to be with his cloak on, but more as a poor, normal, unconfident guy stuck between the love of his wife and child and the tempation of Dormammu's evil power. His choice is put to the test by his followers questioning his leadership, by the White Fang (the wife of a cop The Hood once killed) and Forge (a superhero-cop). And in the end..... wins.....

A bad guy who is a good guy inside. Interesting and fun look at how villains are reacting to Dark Reign.

I'll admit that I am something of a mark for The Hood.

The original miniseries was my first exposure to Brian K. Vaughn, and the story, a rare departure from the norm for Marvel back then, wowed me.

Written during a period where Marvel was resting the waters of more adult fare, The Hood was created under its shelved "Max" line. The story was violent and adult, and served as a segue intobetter reading material for me.

And so, when I picked this up, I came into it with fond memories. And better still, someone had the excellent idea to have the original artist, Kyle Hotz, bring his unique pencils back to the character.

The story is suitably dark, if not a bit meandering. It does get delightfully stark on the last arc, and leaves the character inadvertently new space with a new direction.

Not really sure when or why I bought this book. I am not a fan of the “bad guy as. The hero” story. Good Guys are good, Bad Guys are bad, and good always triumphs over bad; that is how I like my comics. Okay, so I’m not 12 any more, and I enjoy stories and characters with depth, but I still prefer good vs bad, but can see either or each side having shades of gray, but I still don’t like stories where the bad guy is made out to be the victim. In this case, The Hood made a choice, and now he has to live with it. He is a criminal and I do not feel sorry for him.
What this story does well is to not try and make the Hood out to be too much of a sympathetic character. Yes, he got in over his head, but it was more for his greed and need for power than family obligations, so there is not the blatant attempt to make him less of a villain.

The only thing that I like better than comic books are CHEAP comic books! I found this in a $5 box at the Motor City Comic Con last May, and flipped through it. Once I noticed the Kyle Hotz artwork, I decided to give it a try. I really enjoyed his artwork on the two recent Zombie (Simon Garth) mini-series that Marvel put out a few years ago. The Hood is an interesting character even though I mostly dislike his appearances in New Avengers and the whole Norman Osborn/ Dark Reign concept. The $5 box is the quarter box equivalent for trades, so it wasn't a huge gamble.

A bit more of a straight up Marvel story (albeit from the leader of the underworlds perspective) than the previous Hood Graphic Novel I read.

Fun and enjoyable again, good artwork, action packed story. But the origin story of Blood from Stones just worked better for me.

Jeff Parker is a great comic book writer. He took The Hood, a character I've never really cared about, and along with Kyle Hotz created a great, fun series.

This book was a little slow paced but it had a good fleshing out of the main character and it was nice to see a villain who was engaged in crime for reasons besides "the hell of it"
