Still can't believe I read the dictionary but with five hours conducting a mock exam, you better believe I did. It was actually surprisingly enjoyable and I learned a lot of interesting things.
Most importantly, I learned how to tell the time in Polish. Poles actually think of time in first, seconds, and third hours which is quite a fun way to think. I also learned that 1.35 can be said like 'pięć po (w) pół do drugiej'. literally it means five after the half to the second (hour) which is totally nuts but also strangely satisfying to think about. I also learned that 'długopis', ballpoint pen literally means 'long writing' from the word 'długo', 'long' and 'pisać', 'to write'. As in they don't think of the components of the pen like the English do, but rather the function. Also 'pociąg', 'train', literally means to pull and you can say 'pociągać nosem', to sniff or literally to pull into the nose. or 'mieć pociąg do', to be attracted to. Also I found out that biscuit is 'herbatnik' like'herbata', for tea. As a brit, this pleases me greatly as tea and biscuits belong together. Basically I actually surprised myself by having fun reading the dictionary and I really like the way Polish people think, it's unusual and sometimes strange but also oddly satisfying, even if the words are super long and hard to pronounce. My reading and understanding is getting better but I still worry for my speaking. 10/10 would read again esp for the extra phrases and ways things are said that are included in this dictionary. Incredibly useful.
