When her parents die from a famine in early Medieval England, she decides to begin a new life elsewhere, first meeting Captain, a horse she can speak with, and then rescuing a witch child, Marie. Efar, a griffin, is tired of his life as a lady's man and wants to settle down. Just as he realizes Fiera's not the helpless child he first believed, a vicious band of highwaymen attacks, stealing Captain and mortally injuring Marie. Birthright is set in 16 AD and is the story of a young witch who has been shunned all her life. It is also the story of a griffin shapeshifter who is searching for something or someone to make him feel complete.

This book is well researched as for the period in which it's set. It's not a fantasy world. It's real. Witches were pursued and killed. There is no magic, except what the witches make.

This book had a lot of potential. The main issue was the length. Being under 200 pages, there was no world building. We didnt learn about the different political dynamics and the magic system was really underdeveloped. It also lead to a lot of inconsistency in the story. This ended with the potential to be continued, so more time could have been spent building the world and characters.

A story about a girl facing adversity and oppression and kicking its ass.

This is not an epic saga--not yet anyway. It is book one in a series and sets up the rest of the series. Perfect book for lovers of shapeshifting, witches, and general badassery.

I really enjoyed this book!! I had a hard time to put it down. I'm really hoping the Author will grace us with a continuance of these characters in a second book.
