Hm, what to say about this story? It was an 'ok' read. Neither particluarly engrossing, nor laborious to read. The story picks up on a young woman working at a tourist resort and her motely assemblage of aquaintences who've all been assigned to live in one housing unit by the afore-mentioned resort as they all work there.

Into their assorted lives drops a half-killed man who, it turns out, is an ancient witch hunting another, even more ancient witch over what largely turns out to be a family feud.

Like I said, neither engrossing, nor tedious. If you feel like reading it, go ahead. The version I have has both stories so I'll be following up with Witch Season: Fall. I kinda hope it gets better from here. A solid two stars.

Kerry is far away from home, working a summer job at a resort and staying with some new friends. One night, she returns home to find a man laying on her lawn, possibly near death. Against the wishes of her roommates, she brings him into their home for the night.

His name is Daniel Blessing, and he explains that he is searching for a witch named Season. She's dangerous, she killed his brother, and she is now after Kerry and her friends. While Kerry starts to fall for Daniel, she realizes that they're all in danger, and she joins in on the hunt for Season. But a witch this powerful is hard to find, and even harder to kill.

I was mostly impressed with this book, especially with it's take on witches and the conflict between Daniel and Season. Firstly, the powers that the witches had were often brutal or harmful, which is an interesting change from the generally more glamorous magic of witches in other books. For example, when Kerry finds Daniel, he's in horrible condition, with gashes and bleeding to the point that she fears that he will die. This violent style of magic added an air of horror to the novel, especially with Daniel's journals.

Daniel's journals, as mentioned, were provided to Kerry because she wanted to learn more about the whole situation. I really appreciated them, as a reader, because they filled in not only Kerry, but also myself, on the conflict between Daniel and Season. With great detail, often providing more clues to who Daniel was as a character and a person, it assisted in understanding Daniel's relationship with Season, and gave a great back story filled with death and vengeance. Several of Kerry's journal entries are also provided, which gives the reader a glance into her own mind and thoughts, which I also really enjoyed.

I had a bit of an issue with the length of the book. I feel like it was much too short for the story, and I wish that the events had taken place over a longer period of time, and that the author had devoted more effort to characterization. I say this because certain parts of the book felt way too rushed, and I didn't receive as much detail about the general happenings as I wish I had. While the journals and the third person narration went over the events adequately, I feel like something was missing.

I also thought that the romance wasn't well thought out. Kerry seems to fall for Daniel far too quickly, and the author tries to frame her feelings for him as actual love, while they come across more as infatuation. Certainly, love can be evolved from infatuation, however the author did not convince me that Kerry's feelings for Daniel, and vice versa, were genuine as opposed to a crush.

I found this to be a very enjoyable read, and I am hoping that the issues I found within this first book will be solved in the second! I recommend this book to those who like stories about magic. If you're interested in a book including witches, vengeance, and a darker kind of sorcery, this is a great pick.

This book tore my heart out, then the next one started piecing it back together. You fall in love with Kerry and Daniel, just as much as they fall for each other. The bond that they share is one most people only dream of sharing. Season Howe comes between the two and you think that is the worst for Kelly, though it's not, big surprise since there are three more books after Summer, but this book just rips out your heart and makes you wish that things were different. Then when you finally learn the truth, you know that it couldn't be any other way. This book is one of the best I have read and I would definitely re-read it over and over if I knew that it wouldn't make me cry my eyes out once again.

Where did I stop reading? Page 55

Why? Looks like this whole series is being re-released as an anthology title under WITCH SEASON. It sounded interesting enough and it’s an older title so it could potentially have that nostalgia factor so I figured why not? But it didn’t really grab me. It was slow to start, lingering on mundane living situation dynamics before finally, just before the end of my reading tenure, we got a big car chase. But up to that point I was just meh. You lost me. Although I could see a lot of where they were in my head because I’m familiar with La Jolla. But that’s about all it had going for me. I wish I liked it more, but I didn’t.

Soft DNF for now at 61%.

Incredibly slow moving with a plot that goes nowhere. This could’ve been 150 pages, not 300. A group of housemates quit their summer jobs to join forces with a 300 year old witch who is looking for an evil witch that wants to kill him/them. They spend all day going to random places all over San Diego just waiting for this witch to show up. You would think there would be a more effective way to do this.

The writing style is not good. A lot of words including $3 ones but then when something exciting/spooky happens it’s not described well. I was left going, “Huh?” There’s tons of journal entries by two characters throughout which don’t add much but very of the times (ie early 2000s). None of the characters are that interesting either. And we’ve already killed off one of them.

Barely any witchy stuff. Boo. Too bad it’s such a beautiful cover.

Definitely feels like this book was contracted to fill a certain page count.

Blech. This sounded interesting, and (the omnibus) has a lovely cover, so I’m super disappointed. It’s not that the writing itself is bad, because it’s not. It’s just hella boring. Literally nothing important happens for the majority of the book. A little bit of suspense and intrigue at the very beginning, but then the rest of the book is just the characters trying to track down this evil witch. Then in the last few pages, this very underwhelming confrontation between Daniel and Season, during which Daniel dies. So I’m going to nope right out of reading the rest of the books in this series.

This book was…. Eh! The idea of it was kinda ok. But it was rather boring. Nothing really happening. And then it’s just over. Reading part 2 cause I have it already. But, not cause I’m just dieing to see what happen now…. Like really I don’t know how this is a 4 book series….

I read this series when I was in high school (10 years ago) and I remember living them! I recall being gripped by the unexpected turns the series took. I'm tempted to read again.

This books was a struggle for me. It had good imagery but went overboard sometimes. I just don’t think it was my cup of tea.

*i read the omnibus, but split it up to count as 2 books for my challenge...*

so far i am loving this book! i love the author's writing style, especially his parenthetical clauses!

i find myself looking forward to Kerry's journal entries throughout the book. they're written exactly like one, well, I, would write in their journal.

there are a handful of awkward phrases, where it appears that a word was left out, and the whole I vs. me issue (see previous reviews), but the author's style and story more than make up for it!

READING OMNIBUS

this story would have received 5 stars if it weren't the continued lack of words. it just got a little more confusing as the book progressed.

oh, and i am totally bummed about

So I finished book one on 6/27/12 and it was ok. It wasn't super romancy and it wasn't super adventurous like The Hunger Games, so it defiantly wasn't my favorite. At the end, Daniel had just told Kerry the story about how Season got distracted with her love for Caleb, and then Daniel gets distracted by Kerry and gets "killed" by Season. I'm sure he will come back though, I mean he is the main character's love interest and this is only the first book so he is definately coming back in the next book. I will say that I've read better books than this one but it's not bad.

The story concerns a number of young people spending the summer together. They encounter two witches, one named Season and one named Daniel, who have met in the past and fought each other. Season is responsible for killing Daniel's brother and numerous innocent people, and Kerry and her friends have now become targets themselves.

One of the young people ends up getting killed by her, and Daniel and the remaining people finally confront Season in a fight literally to the death.

A fairly good book.

Witch Season was a really good book. In the beginning I thought it was a little boring, but after the first chapter it got interesting. To sum up the book it's basically about a girl during the summer who embarks on a journey that will change her life. She goes from a simple job to trying to hold on to her and her friends life in one night. I liked the book, and recommend it to people who like reading exciting stories.

Interesting story. Difinitely young adult. The only thing that keeps me reading is to find out about Season who really doesn't show up but once.

I think it is typical to assume that the people you love or are attracted to are always "good". I think this book will ultimately call the main character to question her alliances.

This being the first book of four, it's basically just an introduction but still a good story. The beginning is pretty boring, but the end is exciting. There's already two important character deaths in the first book!

I really liked this book. It was a little different how Daniel was a witch. I have never heard of a man being a witch, but I liked it. Did not like how it ended. I am sure it ended that way for the next book.

This is either the second or third time I have read this book, and though I do enjoy it, the ending angers me to this day. I think that may be why I haven't finished the series before now (however I intend to this time around), and I hope that they get better. The storytelling is a bit slow at times, but I enjoyed this all the same. I do reccomend this to those who enjoy witch stories. This is a twisted and complicated journey.
