Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, puts the whole wizarding world on edge, as dark magic grows stronger, and dangers may lurk within Hogwarts walls. Quidditch along with piles of homework, Harry’s life could not get anymore complicated. Even so, as his 6th year at Hogwarts begins, Death Eater attacks are growing, and murders and disappearances are all over the Daily Prophet. Not to mention murder attempts that have been narrowly avoided, and no one knows who the intended victim was. Full of mystery and suspense, J.K Rowling does not disappoint, with new secrets being uncovered and suspects to follow!
The 6th book of this series really explores in depth what may be good… or evil. Though Voldemort seems to be the “bad guy” in the story, Dumbledore, Harry, and even Hermione are also not perfect. Hermoine uses a spell to help Ron in Quidditch tryouts, and Harry, Hermoine, and Ron lie to Hagrid to avoid hurting his feelings. The mysterious Half-Blood Prince is another example of this. It’s knowledge does end up helping Harry both in Potions class and even to save a friend, but its spells also lead Harry to seriously hurt people without fully understanding what they mean. Though there seems to be a clear line between right and wrong, it may be blurred around the edges. However, we can see how each person's overall morals and beliefs set each character apart. While Voldemort craves control and thrives by manipulating others, Dumbledore respects other opinions and is always patient and willing to give second chances. As each reader dives further into the story, we begin to understand these two sides more. We explore different views that create our own understandings of the theme!
The mystery of the Half-Blood Prince is well written, with enough suspense to keep a reader interested as well as clever clues that make it clear that much thought has been put into it. Other mysteries such as Harry’s suspicions of Draco, and to what Dumbledore has been up to, are also written in the captivating style that is often seen throughout the series! There are some pacing issues, as the flow in the book can be uneven. Slower moving sections could be more interspersed with action-packed scenes. There is also a lack of significant plot progression. The book definitely introduces important concepts (that I will not discuss to avoid spoilers) but while some side stories such as Quidditch, bring fun and depth into the story, others like Slughorn’s party, romances, and such make it confusing
Another theme to note is a new kind of drama added to the book. As the main characters are entering their late teens, a certain element of romance is added into the plot, a genre very different from the more common themes of fantasy, action adventure, and mystery, present in the series. Aside from a small love interest between Harry and Cho in the 3rd and 5th books, this is unlike any book in the series so far. Though this new side-plot definitely adds more detail and depth to each character’s personality and the overall story, it also distracts the reader from more important events in the storyline. (Whether you will like this change in style, purely depends on your taste and opinion.)
This book should be for ages ten and up, as it does take a significantly dark turn compared to the previous books. There are quite a few violent scenes especially towards the end as well as while Harry and Dumbledore are exploring memories. The increasing amount of romance between the teens also may be inappropriate for younger readers and though no swear words are written, some characters are described using “rude hand gestures.”
Overall, the cleverly written plot, genius character development, heartbreaking betrayals, and shocking losses will captivate any reader. I highly recommend it to those who love lots of action, suspense, and are ready to take on a big read! It is sure to make you eager to start the next book!
