Pretty pretty pictures. It made me fall in love with the band all over again.
I'm not sure when this book went to the publisher (I know it can be months in advance of publication) but I noticed there wasn't any mention of the passing of the bass player. He died in December 2009. The copyright of the book is 2010. It was bittersweet seeing him in the pictures. He was always my favorite (besides Ryan Adams, of course).
If you're an RA+Cardinals fan this is a great little book that follows the band's travels in a very personal way over the course of a few years. I felt like a geeky groupie checking out the decor in RA's old NYC apartment, counting the cigarettes in the ashtray at the studio. Even laughing as I turned the page and saw the Rollins photo. If you like good music, good photography and have a coffee table, this should be on it.
This was amazing. I spent last night after the kids went to bed just slowly absorbing these photos. Neal Casal has got a great eye, and the subject matter was very near and dear to me. Some tof the best music of the last decade has come from Ryan Adams, and certainly the best touring rock band of the last 4 or 5 years was the Cardinals.
This is one I'll be recycling through my read-currently reading shelves quite frequenty.
(Non-Fiction, Photography) Ryan Adams is an amazingly talented musician, but who knew The Cardinals lead guitarist, Neal Casa,l was a talented photographer? These photos are beautiful and lend a glimpse into the craftsmanship of writing songs together and camaraderie that comes with a band's pilgrimage on the road. I really enjoyed the commentary from each band member throughout the photographs.
"Photographs are the songs I cannot write; the music I hear in my head, but can't yet play. I search for something quiet in them, like the space between breaths. Photographing and playing with Ryan Adams and the Cardinals has brought me closer that music, that space." Neal Casal
Borrowed this from a friend. Definitely one I need to add to my own library. Neal captures some fabulous photos, but the commentary within from Ryan and the Cardinals is fantastic. As a Ryan Adams fan, this is a must-have.
This book is gorgeously done. Whether you are a fan of Ryan himself, or just a fan of brilliant photography, Casal takes you on a visual journey of what life is like on the road and the surprises that pop up in between. Truly a brilliant book from start to finish.
Incredible photography, but it's the foreword and introduction that make this book so magical. Great words throughout from the band members and friends.
