I'm currently reading this book. Even though I've from the devoted Unix/Linux family, I realized that people I train and work with NEED to have a mastery of these skills in the workplace. I'm planning on teaching a course this summer in our Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) 2012 and I really need an affordable book from which to teach the class to our participants. My hope is that this book will be the primary resource I can use to mix my experience with, and transfer the knowledge to the participants using CompTIA CTT+ principles.

At the end of our 2012 SYEP, my hope is this book will be effective in helping the participants take their exam for the MCTS and thus gain a marketable skill that employers value and are willing to pay for.

I'll let you know how this turns out with an update in the next few weeks (well before the summer ends). BTW - Good stuff comes with the book in this training kit!

UPDATE: I finished this book. Also, I had a chance to digest the material and use it to teach a class in preparation for the exam. It's much better the the original edition that had numerous technical errors. However, in my opinion, this book alone would NOT help the reader prepare for the MCTS Win 7 exam. It's a good resource, but additional study and lab resources are needed. This pairs nicely with the MCTS book by Poulson. These two books, together with consistent lab exercises (hands on), and some videos would do the job. I gave it 3 stars.

I bought this guide to prepare for the Microsoft exam. I passed the exam, and I learnt some useful things by reading this book, so in that sense it's ok. However, there are far too many errors! I've read the corrected edition (from June 2012), and 3 years after publication I've still submitted several errata through the website. Also, I found that the information wasn't presented clearly, particularly in the early chapters that covered deployment; it would have been better to start with a simple overview of the available options and then go into more detail. Based on that, I'll be very cautious about buying any more books by these authors.

As a separate issue, be aware that the ebook doesn't include a voucher for a discount on the exam. So, even though the ebook is typically cheaper than the paper copy, you may have to pay more money overall. Also, it's not very convenient to flick between questions and answers at the end of each lesson. You can download software that contains all the practice questions, but you can't select a particular chapter/lesson, only an exam objective. Again, I think there's room for improvement.

pretty disappointed in this book, some sections go into a lot of detail and others seem to be really rushed, felt like they were topics not of interest to the authors.
