I was really hoping this book would delve more on the metaphysical side of St. Germain's life. As it is, although it touched upon that aspect, the main thrust of the book was to give us an overview of the work he did in trying to help bring Peace to France in the late 1700's. There were some interesting glimpses of historia, but overall not what I had been looking for, fascinating though this period of history was.

It's hard to be hyperbolic about St. Germain. As this book shows, the real man was far more impressive than the occultists make him out to be. This is a historical book, blissfully free of nonsensical New Age occult mumbo jumbo.

Although I believe there's some truth to the comforting notions of violet rays and past lives that take up so much of the literature about St. Germain, they tend to obscure what is one of the most intriguing stories in recent history: how one man singlehandedly conspired to prevent the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars by befriending Europe's royalty and spreading a message of peace - but running afoul of Europe's ministers, who felt that he was creating a dangerous situation by going behind their backs. The great diplomat Willem Bentinck van Rhoon is one of the most important sources on St. Germain, and his opinions have stuck in the minds of theosophical historians: "If the Comte de St. Germain had shown as much prudence as he had shown zeal, he would have, I believe, much accelerated Peace; but he relied too much on his own intentions and had not a bad enough opinion of those of the men with whom he had to deal." Cooper-Oakley's book shows how even sympathizers like Rhoon underestimated St. Germain. It seems that St. Germain was utterly indifferent to the suspicions and negativity that he elicited.

The primary sources collected in this book are stunning. It's harder than ever for me to deny that St. Germain was every bit as mysterious as theosophists make him out to be. I don't know of any modern-day parallel to this man, although his influence in fiction reaches far and wide, from Dracula and Monte Cristo, to Highlander and the vampire romance novels that bear his name. If you're even remotely interested in Theosophy, read this book as soon as possible.

Some parts are a bit difficult to understand if you don't have profund knowledge about the history and important figures of that time. But as a whole, you get the idea of the truly magnificent, mysterious and deeply intelligent personality that the Count of Saint Germain was and in this sense the book is incredibly inspiring and eye-opening about unknown aspects of our Universe and wisdom of existence.

This book gets 5 stars not for its prose or plot but solely for its subject matter. The Comte St Germain-international man of mystery/the man who never dies.. Warning to all who read this book. The source materials quoted for the Count’s interactions with Marie Antoinette were proven to be forgeries. Still, the appendices contain lots of impressive primary source material.

Fascinating character. I wish there were more on WHAT he knew—I am so intrigued by what they mention about the Souvenirs sur Marie Antoinette ... et sur la cour de Versailles / par Madame la Csse d'Adhemar because the interactions between the court and the Comte were so unique.

This is a book about Prince Ragoczy........from Transavania.
Very interesting history about the Ragoczy family. I believe that I was part of this family in a past life. The spelling was changed when they came to America .....to Rakoci. Beleive it or not. It is not in print anymore. I got a copy from a store here in Phoenix.

I found this book to be rather slow moving at parts, but the material is great and seems well researched. I would recommend it to someone who is keen on learning more about the great Saint Germain and his involvement in the French Revolution!

Very thorough overview of the contemporary material available about perhaps the most enigmatic figure in history. A bit disorganized and confusing, but still a fascinating read.
