Captain Rourke. He's a former Navy officer, a brooding, gorgeous treasure hunter who lives his life on the ocean. I'm a small-town girl from Nebraska who's barely even seen the sea. But when a mystery disease attacks my sister, I must team up with Rourke to find the sunken ship that holds the cure. He's a loner, determined to push everyone away...but when he looks at me, he melts the clothes right off my body.
To save my sister, I'll have to enter a whole new world of smugglers, sunken gold and deadly storms. In the close confines of Rourke's boat, there's no way I can ignore that smoldering gaze, or the way my legs go weak whenever he takes hold of me. He claims he's no hero yet he protects me like no other...can I save him from the pain that's tearing him apart? I'm from the prairies; he's from the sea. But I need to learn his world, fast, because others want what's on that sunken ship...and they'll kill both of us to get it.
Standalone romance with guaranteed HEA and no cheating.
Hannah’s life is pretty plain. She lives in a small town, loves her job at the local library and hasn’t been very successful with love. Her life will change a lot, because her sister is suddenly dying. Hannah is determined to find the cure, but she can’t do it alone. She needs a captain with a boat, because the cure is somewhere at the bottom of the ocean. On a night out, Hannah meets a captain named Rourke. She asks him for help, but he declines since he doesn’t go treasure hunting anymore. When Hannah is in danger, Rourke saves her and he finally agrees to help her. Hannah and Rourke go on an adventure that will put their lives in danger and one that will test their knowledge.
Hannah is an amazing character. She is much braver and stronger than she thinks. She faces and conquers her fears. She’s determined to save her sister and she would do anything for that. Hannah loves reading books. She usually always has a book with her, so she’s a little lost at Rourke’s boat. She struggles at the boat in the beginning, but she tries to help Rourke and she loves to get to know him better. Hannah accepts Rourke like he is. She wants a future with him.
I liked the way we met Rourke and I was immediately intrigued by him. Rourke wasn’t the nicest or gentlest man at the start, but it didn’t take long before he grew on me and I loved him at the end. He’s strong, protective, smart, lonely and talented. He lives on his boat and he loves the sea. Rourke wants Hannah from the start. There is something about her that makes him do things he normally wouldn’t do. He enjoys life again and he loves to be with her.
Helena Newbury delivers again a suspenseful, unique, action packed, a little bit emotional and sweet book. This book has many action scenes that always had me on the edge of my seat. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough, because I needed to know how they were going to survive or what would happen next. It was sometimes maybe a little unbelievable, but I don’t need it to be believable. I want to enjoy and love a book, and I did both with Captain Rourke.
This book was less steamy than the author’s other books, but I loved it that the author never rushed anything between Hannah and Rourke. Rourke pushed Hannah away, because he’s convinced that she deserves better. He has been alone for a while and he has some issues. But Rourke is the man Hannah needs and wants. Hannah is perfect for Rourke. She understands him. I love them together!
-- My honest review is based on an advanced reader copy of this book. --
‘Captain Rourke’ captured my imagination in a way that few contemporary romances these days do: it felt mortifyingly like an old bodice-ripper pirate romance (the sword’s included as well) only with updated technology, a mysterious and science-defying genetic illness, treasure hunts, grizzled (and clichéd) bad guys rushing after gold and multiple instances of heaving bosoms, tight nipples, bare chests and fluttering groins.
Yet Helene Newbury pulls this off with that panache typically associated with such pirate acts anyway and it’s sort of…fascinating to go through the book with a rather naive heroine who romanticises 17th century pirate affairs, a seemingly impossible (and hard to believe) quest and a jaded, crippled captain who keeps reminding himself to push away from the woman he wants.
Apart from Newbury’s trademark use of the protagonists’ exaggerated lust and extreme sexual reactions to each other, ‘Captain Rourke’ is quite the audacious (sometimes cheesy and incredible) take on the treasure-hunting tale. Repetitive phrases however, do make the story longer than I thought necessary: Rourke’s insistence that he's just waiting to die at sea and that Hannah deserves someone better than him; both seem to have overly long meditative monologues about how their bodies stir when they are near each other, just to begin with.
The sheer amount of action makes this an easy story to go through. I did cringe many times, reminded as I was from time to time of the historical romances that I used to read quite a long, long time ago where clichés knew no bounds. But this works solely on actively suspending any sense of disbelief, so leave every last shred of reality at the door before you start.
1,000,000,000⭐️ I thought nothing could top Alaska Wild but Miss Helena did it again and now this is my NUMBER 1 FAV. There is so much adventure, danger, tension, romance I was on the edge of my seat!! My babies went through hell. Trying to find a sunken treasure in order to cure a mysterious illness in her bloodline. Not only did they have to face dangers under the sea but above as well. They weren’t the only ones after the treasure. It was life or death that she find the cure to this illness.
These characters have scars, they have trauma and have to to face their fears. I don’t think I’ve ever cried in a book like I did for 2 specific scenes from this book. Those scenes were so raw and real and heartbreaking that I was sobbing. (There is a HEA don’t worry)! Rourke is the most grumpy of all grumpys and she’s your ultimate sunshine. They would go through anything to get this cure. There is never a dull moment in this book. Their romance is so beautiful. Tension is off the charts🔥I suggest everyone reads this book because this author is a genius and this book is a masterpiece just like Alaska Wild.
If Helena Newbury has a 1,000,000 fans I am one of them. If she has 1 fan that is me. If she has no fans then I am dead.
*warning: If you can’t handle reading about deep dark water be advised*
Even if I had to suspend disbelief (quite) a bit surrounding the reason Hannah lands in Nassau, the heart pounding non-stop thrill ride of the adventure, the ghosts of lost lives, and the purity of an old-school romance was worth holding on till journey's end! Four solid stars. So glad Captain Rourke and Hannah set sail and let me come along!
AYE AYE Captain! Helena Newbury has done it again. The opening pages start with the most drool worthy God of the Sea, sculpted from mother nature herself. There is a sense of desperation and anxiety from Hannah that makes you want to help her. Earth meet Ocean – a girl from Nebraska and a man of the sea couldn't possibly help each other. Not when they have so much pain of the past.
When I started to read I had to put the book down a couple of times. I didn't want to read what was about to happen. Then there was a point where I just couldn't put it down. The entire story is a fast paced adventure with pirates, treasure, mystery disease, and lots of sexual tension.
What a question …. OF COURSE I want to go and especially after reading this book :-) If you liked the Pirates of the Caribbean, you will also like “Captain Rourke”. If you didn’t like it, no problem at all. This book is much better. More realistic and with more action. What I am trying to say is, it's action, then romantic, but it comes straight back to the action, with love in between and once again some more action....etc. and the captain is Scottish! Aye-aye ;-) He is a treasure hunter and she is….she. A normal girl from Nebraska. He is a grumpy captain and she's a nice girl from a small village. The plot is so fast and so flowing, before you know what’s happening to you, you are through the complete book and it’s 3 a.m. Exactly, and you have to go to work in the morning, once again the same SHIIIII…… over and over again :D Therefore my recommendation => Read Helenas books on weekends ;-) ;-) This book is like all Helenas books, crazy exciting and with sooooo much action, adventure, romance and love. Sorry, I don’t know how to described this more accurate. Oh, I know: I love it!!! <3 <3 <3
I will not disclose what is going on in this book, no spoiler from me Read this book and enjoy! ;-). I definitely enjoyed it very much.
I recommend the book to all the romantics, action, heat, and HEA fans.
Such a unique find! A mysterious disease affects a young woman and her sister. So she is on a quest to find a cure. It leads her to Nassau to talk to her great grandfather, but he has recently passed away. She encounters the brooding and former Scottish Navy Captain Rourke and from there their adventure is high seas amazing! Buried treasure. Enemies fighting. And, one romance at its finest. You will not be disappointed with this one! It's sure to make you fall in love with this author's writing! Couldn't put it down!!!
If you're looking for a good contemporary romance that has an actual PLOT and stellar character development, stop right now and READ THIS. Trust me. This one is a rare gem, my friends!
Suspense, edge of your seat action on the high seas, hot as hell scenes with a hotter than hell leading man you will definitely fall in love with, a heroine who is damn awesome in every way and doesn't take any shit despite all the cards being stacked against her, an evil villain and his minions to root against, awesome plot and back stories for both characters, and a cute monkey named YoYo = you better get on this book ASAP.
I fully went into this book expecting a cringy love story. I 👏🏻 WAS👏🏻 WRONG 👏🏻. I absolutely loved this book. Call me basic but it had everything I wanted!
Captain Rourke and Hannah’s story was FANTASTIC. Oceanic treasure hunting, searching for a lifesaving cure, evil smugglers/hunters, and a love story so intense, time cannot hold it back. Is there anything more to ask for in a book? Just that HEA. Helena Newbury delivers, once again.
Treasure hunting, a woman on a desperate mission, and a tormented captain as hot as sin. Oh, my!
With an organic, ardent writing style, this story is as much thrilling adventure as it is vibrant romance. And a winner on both accounts. Captain Rourke is full of dark mysteries, beautifully male, strong and imposing. I melted for him just as small town-librarian Hannah succumbed to his commanding presence and physical power.
From a life or death ultimatum to a race against time, the plot is a non-stop rollercoaster to save lives, find a lost treasure and escape multiple dangers. All the while, Hannah and Rourke burn with a molten hot desire for each other. And I kept urging them in my mind to do something more than stare hungrily at their scantily clad bodies. Oh, the chemistry! The sheer pressure of lust! More than the ocean's, believe me :-D
It's got it all: exotic islands, coral-filled oceans, ingenuous treasure maps, the (cliché) British villain, hungry sharks, deadly goals, and breathlessly hot passion.
In between fear, excitement and pirates, they finally give in to their carnal pull. And WOW. Amazing setting for it and melting hot description.
(Spoiler:
what I couldn't understand is that she's been hinting at having no experience due to her lifestyle, but suddenly she's been there but now she's just bolder. It was as weird as he grabbing for a conveniently handy condom...)
Never mind that because every scene is alive with tricky obstacles and alluring dangers, rough seas and pirate legends. Hannah is a mouse of a woman with a heart that never gives up and Rourke is stubborn as hell. I loved them both so much! I loved the emotional scene when he pours his secret out with heart-wrenching narrative. And Yoyo! He's my hero!
This couple certainly earns their happy ending. The chain of harrowing experiences and horrifying dangers never ended, and they suffered and almost died a hundred times before they breached that line that separated them from redemption and freedom. Wow, what a story!
Captain Rourke is a fast paced race against time on the high seas. Ms. Newbury builds tension and excitement right from the start when we meet Hannah, a librarian from Nebraska who heads to Nassau to hopefully find some clues to a mysterious disease that is threatening her sister’s life. She meets Rourke on the beach and feels a connection to him, but brushes it off as fanciful on her part. When she later has a run-in with some local treasure hunters and is saved from them by Rourke, she begins to think that the connection with him is not so one-sided after all.
Armed with an old map, Hannah and Rourke set off on the high seas in a race against time to find a treasure that could be hiding the cure for the disease that is killing her sister. As they both battle their own fears, guilt and ghosts from past tragic losses, they try to fight their attraction to each other, but soon realize that what they are feeling for each other is intense and real. Ms. Newbury has a gift for writing complicated characters who find redemption and peace when they are least looking for it and from whom they least expect it.
I was gifted an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Captain Rourke delivers a romantic, centuries old pirate tale, a dangerous treasure hunt, colorful secondary characters, a feisty heroine, a swoon-worthy hero, tension filled action and a sweet, little monkey thrown in just for fun. If you’re looking for an adventure with a side of romance, a load of danger and a fortune in buried treasure, you’ve found it. Another well written, fun and interesting read from Helena Newbury.
"The man's voice was unshakeable. The anger in his eyes was ruthlessly controlled, blistering heat frozen and carved into a weapon. I'd never understood the expression cold fury until that moment."
This is my first book from Helene Newbury. I randomly found out about her on Facebook. A friend recommended her book Captain Rourke. I immediately bought it.
"Maybe she wasn't a mermaid. Maybe she was a siren, singing some sweet song that had got inside my head."
Captain Rourke is a brooding man yet he's strong, protective, smart, and caring in his own way. He loves the sea so much that he lives on his boat. He is absolutely lonely and he likes to keep it that way especially with his past.
"You're like a dream, lass."
Hannah is an avid reader. She is so strong and brave. She is determined to save her little sister from a family disease that is currently untreatable.
"I was a daily, being lured by a siren. The wind had dropped away to nothing and there wasn't so much as a ripple on the surface looked so solid, I swore I could walk straight across it to her."
Captain Rourke and Hannah met on less than ideal situation but it helped them get together to go on a life or death adventure. This was a non-stop roller coaster ride that had my heart beating out of my chest. I was literally on the edge of my seat.
"I am bewitched."
Captain Rourke is a tale full of adventures with dangerous adventures but was romantic that was flawlessly blended in. This is definitely different from all the books I have read before and I think it is the fact that it is so adventure filled yet it was still a lot of romance in it.
"And then I just bloody kissed her."
Helena Newbury is a new favorite for sure! I can't wait to read more of her other books.
An unexpected, frightening childhood accident left librarian Hannah Barnes motherless and aquaphobic. Her mother’s last directive to take care of for her baby sister, Katherine is seared in Hannah’s every action. When Katherine has a deadly prognosis from an inexplicable illness, Hannah learns it isn’t quite inexplicable and the answers might be in the Nassau.
Outside her grandfather’s cabin on the beach, Hannah ponders the family lore of an uncurable curse her grandfather spent his fortune chasing. Handsome, sexy Captain Rourke teases new feelings and reactions in Hannah when they meet on the beach. Hannah then learns her grandfather died days before. Hoping for a clue, Hannah decides to read through his papers.
Hannah’s exhausted, confused and feeling hopeless in a bar designed for pirates and treasure hunters when Rourke steps in to stop her from being molested. Their brief conversation over a drink unlocks the puzzle of Hannah’s reading. Thrilled, Hannah shows Rourke proof the treasures they each seek are together.
A lifetime of disappointing and fruitless searches helped by Rourke’s growing obsession for her makes Rourke refuse Hannah’s pleas. Realizing she’s a candidate for the curse, Hannah desperately goes to Rourke’s unscrupulous rival, Ratcher, who eagerly accepts the job. Seeing Hannah board Ratcher’s boat, Rourke follows and barely rescues Hannah from Ratcher and his crew’s attention. The ocean helps them escape as Ratcher follows in a bigger, faster boat! Rating: 4.5stars
Captain Rourke By Helena Newbury 5 stars! IS there anything that this author cannot write? I absolutely loved this latest book from her. I’ve definitely come to the conclusion that I need to stop saying I’ve found my favourite book from this author because I say it every time I finish one! She just has this amazing ability to transport you into the world of her stories and this one was no exception! I’m not usually a great fan of insta-love stories but I couldn’t help but find myself completely drawn into the connection between Captain ‘I’m very much in love with you’ Rourke and Hannah. I loved reading about this journey that they went on. Rourke was just like a sexy modern day pirate – if only he were real *swoons* - I’d definitely sail the seas with him!! The descriptive writing in this story just went to another level and I could imagine all of the breath-taking scenery that I was reading about. I really love the different type of story Helena has written this time and it shows just how versatile she is as an author! The story had a great pace, flowed seamlessly, had fantastic characters, a gripping storyline and filled with lots of sexual tension! This story was definitely a 5 star winner for me!!
*** I am voluntarily reviewing an Advanced Reader Copy of this book*** Modern day pirates, hot, dark, brooding captains swooping in to save the day.......hummm, sign me up!! Helena Newbury has done a great job telling Will Rourke and Hannah Barnes story of more than treasure hunting on the high seas. Hannah needs to find a cure for her sister, her female family members, and herself from a mysterious disease or "curse" that has plagued her family of what appears to be centuries. The story weaves great characters, a well developed story line, interesting side characters through the entire book. Well written, although at times the paced dragged a bit. But overall, another great read by Helena Newbury.
This was an OK read. It was quick and easy read which I have enjoyed reading.
The main characters are Hannah and Rourke. Helen is a sister trying to look after her ill sister by seeking a treasure that she thinks captain Rourke may be able to help with. Of course along with the treasure she will meet numerous other problems but she didn't ever think her emotions would get in the way. Captain Rourke prefers his independence until he meets Helen.
There are some secondary characters but none that I found noteworthy.
The storyline wasn't the most original but it was a quick and easy read. The pacing was OK and I thought the treasure hunt part was excellent but the romantic part was a bit of a let down.
As always a well written, brilliant character development and heart warming, blush causing steamy novel from Helena. Low scoring for me because I found the plot a little bit far fetched. A girl goes out to seek a magical cure for a hereditary illness that severely crippled the female side of her family. On her adventures she meets captain rourke as he starts to help her, and eventually the two of them tear down each other’s wall and form a romance. The romance side is great, intense. The back stories of the characters are well done and put in place. The drama in the plot is also really great. However, the plot was just too fanciful for me and a bit too mystical which isn’t something I come to expect from the author. Would still recommend for anyone who wants a steamy fantasy romance
A brilliant exhilarating exciting wild adventure Helena Newbury has outdone herself on this one it absolutely captivates you and takes you on a crazy ride. Captain Rourke a rough tough Scottish devilishly handsome grumpy sea Captain finds himself captivated by Hannah a sweet land loving librarian afraid of the sea. She needs his help to save herself and her female family members that will all die from a deadly illness and together they have the adventure of a lifetime whilst against time and deadly pirates. This book keeps you riveted to the pages and takes you with them on their quest you join these two on their ups and downs and crazy adventure. An exceptional read.
Mmmmm… Another good book from Helena Newbury. A bit different, yet bore all her trademarks. Full of action and suspense, a bit dark and gritty, honest, sexy. All in one package of book goodness.
Hannah and Rourke, two people who couldn’t be much more different, drawn strongly to one another. Thrown in family love, greedy bad guys, and healing souls. A perfect story came together. I refrain from 5 stars only because I felt a bit of difficulty in engaging the story at the start. Only after 5th chapter I felt connection to the book. However, it was a great journey after.
I was provided a complementary copy by the author / publisher, but this in no way influenced my thoughts or opinions.
From the first page I was gripped with the intriguing synopsis! Hannah must find a rare mineral that can only save her sister from a terifying death. This leads her to Nassau in search of her information regarding how she can find this mineral but time is of the essence. A chance meeting with a very rugged Scottish captain which leads her on to a voyage of discovery, not only for the mineral but also about herself. This story is full of edge of the seat drama, suspense and "OMG that is not going to happen" moments. I think this is Helena's best book yet, which is hard to say as she has written some fantastic books. Thank you!
Incurable disease that effects the female line of the family, so Hannah sets out to find her grandfather to find a cure. Her hopes are to find a cure for her very ill sister, there she meets a captain and the adventure kicks off there. So much crammed into this story with enough peril, excitement and romance. It could be a movie and if its made right a very entertaining one. I loved it, characters, dialogue and storyline was great. Only negative is the amount of bad luck two people could have. But despite the occasional as if moments, it was highly entertaining and fun. Break from the normal romances out there, this one has a plot!
Couldn’t put this one down. Not sure how the author doesn’t have high blood pressure. As a reader, I can feel mine go through the roof! Hannah is a librarian from Nebraska who needs to get to the Bahamas to see her great-grandfather when her sister falls ill. Once she gets there she realizes there is a medication that will heal her sister-she just has to find it amongst a sunken pirate ship. Rourke is a fantastic Captain and treasure Hunter but he has given it up after a tragic event. He doesn’t want to help Hannah but finds himself drawn to her and vows to keep her out of danger. This was really exciting and good.
I just loved this fast paced story. It is really a modern day Pirate story with an unusual twist: an urgent mission to find a cure for an incurable disease that strikes down a particular families young women in their early to mid 20's. Will good prevail over bad....will the cure be found....will the treasure be found.....will they be in time!!!! So much tension and bitten fingernails. Boy, does this lady know how to keep you guessing and also make it interesting and real! Well done Helena Newbury, you have done it again.
WOW! WOW! Helena Newbury never fails to amaze me with her stories and this one tops all expectations! A reluctant hero, pirates, cryptic clues, ghosts, treasure, curses, a strong and desperate heroine, and scenic beauty beyond belief are what await you when you travel with Captain Rourke and Hannah on their stormy high seas adventure both on the water and between the sheets. Purchase this book for the adventure of a lifetime. I received a copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.
Helena Newbury gets better with each book. And, her books were 5 for me long before this one. I'm always amazed at how she immerses you into the story and makes you feel as if you're sharing the life. She writes great details about different life challenges without making it boring. If this is the first book of hers you read, you'll definitely want to backup and read them all. Love Captain Rorke! Be sure to read about Mason in Alaska Wild. Didn't think she could too Alaska Wild? Well, we were both wrong. Can't wait for the audio as well.
I am still processing what I just read!!! I came to the conclusion that Helena will never dissapoint me, she will always blow my mind with the stories that she's coming up with.
I got drawn from the insta-love/lust between Rourke and Hannah and from there it was just a lovely journey that I never wanted to end. The history, the clues, the breahtaking islands and caves that I could literally see them, the chemistry between our main characters, the danger, everything. I thought I am going to explode with emotion thanks to these amazing charcters and thrilling plot.
With each book she writes we get more adrenaline, more danger, action and love, loads of love. And I am more than happy to be on the end of receving it. Thank you!!!
Wow. This author has done it again. From the very start of the book right through to the end, the story had me gripped. I spent most of the book with my heart in my throat as Hannah and Rourke searched the seas for treasures lost hundreds of years ago and the cure for the mysterious disease killing the women in Hannah's family. The story was fast paced, full of action, had suspense, moving moments, and moments of panic. It really was like riding a roller coaster of emotions while reading it, but wow, what a ride it was. Absolutely loved it.
Helena did it again with an amazing story. This is a modern day pirate book with lots of suspense and a love story. It kept me on the edge of my seat from the first page til the ending. I normally wouldn't even consider this type of book( the whole pirate thing isn't my cup of tea) but since I've read and loved previous books by Helena, I volunteered to read and review it and I LOVED it. Highly recommend.
Oh my goodness, I loved this book. I bought it because I loved Alaska Wild and this did not disappoint! Love both of the lead characters and was rooting for them all the way. Found myself with tears running down my face one time and laughing the next. This was super action packed and I'd find myself wondering how they were going to get out the mess they were in. Highly recommended.
