Scarred is a strong, energetic account of Dave Roever's life. He tells an explosive story of triumph. Reflecting on his youth, his injury in Vietnam, & his continuing recovery, you'll feel like you're there with Dave as his faith carries him through.
Suffering produces valuable empathy. As a shared human experience - though the degrees vary - suffering allows us to meet people face to face. Not to justify or even relate to others suffering, but to see them and HEAR them in an entirely new way. Everyone wants to be heard and seen, and someone who’s suffered can offer just that. It’s not about just getting through the trial or pain, but approaching God’s presence and throne in a way we wouldn’t have before. The piercings of our heart and soul reveal our deepest longing to know God in an intimate way.
Dave does a great job of not allowing his identity to be what he suffered, but instead a way of leveraging the now story he has because he suffered. Dave has a story - not of just physical suffering - but of encountering God in a moment that radically changed his life. His heart for God, family, and people is clear throughout the text. This book will encourage someone who has experienced mental, emotional, physical, or truly any kind of long suffering.
I love that we get to know a God who is for us and not against us. I believe relationship with Jesus is so much more than just “getting through the bad times”, but instead walking in victory, power, peace, and dwelling in the love God has for us - regardless of the physical circumstances. I think Dave lives this out really well considering he embodied physical suffering, and yet He fell in love with the God who was and is always for him.
The book was okay. It was interesting to read about the author's experiences, although the latter half of the book comes across as a little holier than thou.
The Inspirational True Story of an American Hero Dave Roever is an American hero. In "Scarred," Roever tells his legendary story. While serving in Viet Nam, he was severely burned when a phosphorus grenade exploded in his face. However, by the grace of God, he turned tragedy into triumph. Dave used his scars to fulfill his God-called purpose and he has taken the Gospel around the world. "Scarred" is an emotionally satisfying book. It is one of those rare books that is difficult to put down. If you are looking for inspiration and a deeper faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, then you should read this book.
A riveting, jaw-dropping autobiography of a Navy SEAL during the Vietnam War that will leave you teary-eyed and speechless. It well might change your outlook on our Vietnam heroes.
Incredible story of a veteran who is God fearing, and has an amazing message for the world. This book is funny, emotional, patriotic and will leave you feeling so happy that your read it.
A good book of how a Vietnam veteran would not give up his faith in God after being burnt over a large portion of his body. He went on to preach the gospel around the world.
This book is similar to "Welcome Home Davey"; therefore, my review is similar.
Generally, my reading is limited to the Bible. My available time is minimal, so my reading must be meaningful.
Having said this, "Scarred" is well worth reading!
This is a compelling true story of the account of Dave Roever and his injuries, recovery, and ministry that have arisen since his time in Viet Nam.
I would VERY HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book to engaged and newlywed couples!
No, this is not a book about how to have a good marriage, but the testimonies included in this story demonstrate what a REAL Christian marriage should be like.
Dave has experienced many things most of us will never experience. However through it all he keeps an upbeat attitude overall with humor! I can't imagine experiencing one of his ordeals let alone all of them together. He definitely is a fighter with a compassionate heart towards others. He truly has transcended past his experiences, in not staying there to turning bad into good in an extraordinary way!
Compelling personal account of the author's upbringing in Texas, his desire to serve in ministry, the tragedy ending his Navy duty in South Vietnam with the "Brown Water Black Beret" supporting Navy SEALs; and the shaping and defining of a man and his roles as husband, father, and multi-functional minister with a tremendous heart for others who have survived many kinds of trauma and tragedies.
Nothing like a book on the horrors of Vietnam to put you in the Christmas spirit. Seriously - this is an amazing story of perseverance, forgiveness, and triumph, all for God's Glory.
"Every time I look in a mirror, put on my hair, stick on my ear, and start my day ... Forgetting is not possible. Forgiving is." - Dave Roever
