Dictator's Ransom
Is Kim Jong-il really a fanatical fan of Dick Marcinko, the Rogue Warrior? Has the terrifying tyrant actually read every one of Marcinko's many New York Times bestsellers?

Why hasn't Hollywood made a movie about the Rogue Warrior??? There are so many superhero action movies that now they are being re-made. The Rogue Warrior is like John McClane from Die Hard mixed with Rambo, except that he is the real deal; not a ficticious hero! But, I digress...
"Dictator's Ransom", like the other installments in the Rogue Warrior series, is a fast-paced, action-packed, enjoyable read. Plus, Marcinko has a great sense of humor and I love his politically-incorrect style. Some of the scenarios in the book are a little unbelievable at times, but hey, it's fiction and it's fun! You know that the tactics and ops are based on real-life experience since Marcinko literally developed modern spec-ops and anti-terrorism warfare as we know it.
I give it 4 out of 5 stars only because I wish that some of the events in the book were more climactic and not played out so quickly. Never the less, I highly recommend "Dictator's Ransom" and any of Marcinko's books!

This was the first book I have read in the Rogue Warrior series by Richard Marcinko. I was not prepared for the different approach to writing by this author.
The story is written in the first person. Even though it is fiction, the story seems very real. After reading about the author's past real life exploits, I realized that the author has actually experienced the reality he was writing about. I doubt that the author has ever actually been involved with the North Korean leaders, l have no doubt that the action in the book is something that he has experienced. This makes the book seem very real.
Another thing that surprised me was the frequent use of dry humor. I enjoyed the light hearted aspects of the story both in the prose and in the footnotes.
I did not find the characters to be compelling but then, this is a pure action story.

The plot is gripping, and the action segments are well-paced. My only negative comment would be that the final chapters seem very surreal.

Dickie Marcinko has never written anything not worth reading! Great plot, great action, great characters...what is not to like? Set is Asia predominantly North Korea it is spellbinding in its intensity!

Dick intends to refuse but in light of a pending nuclear treaty is persuaded by the State Department and the CIA to accept and find the location of some hidden nukes. Kim Jong Il wants Dick to find his bastard son, who is somewhere in China. Most preposterous yet.

Here is another one that I just picked up because I have read all the others, and this one follows the formular. Demo Dick saves the world. His earlier books I thought were closer to what I thought was happening in the world. This one deals with North Korea and while that is relavent, it seems very simplistic. I would say it was written at a lower level except for the violence.

It is just like his other books; very fast paced. If you have never read him then start with the first and go from there. I think he is light reading.

A little rougher than I prefer. Hard to believe you could survive 2 helicopter crashes in 2 weeks and still take on 5 people hand to hand...

I couldn't finish it. The first person, tongue in cheek humor that other reviewers have mentioned did me in too. I was disappointed because I thoroughly enjoyed Rogue Warrior.
