About the author

The Brazilian author PAULO COELHO was born in 1947 in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Before dedicating his life completely to literature, he worked as theatre director and actor, lyricist and journalist. In 1986, PAULO COELHO did the pilgrimage to Saint James of Compostella, an experience later to be documented in his book The Pilgrimage. In the following year, COELHO published The Alchemist. Slow initial sales convinced his first publisher to drop the novel, but it went on to become one of the best selling Brazilian books of all time. Other titles include Brida (1990), The Valkyries (1992), By the river Piedra I sat Down and Wept (1994), the collection of his best columns published in the Brazilian newspaper Folha de São Paulo entitle Maktub (1994), the compilation of texts Phrases (1995), The Fifth Mountain (1996), Manual of a Warrior of Light (1997), Veronika decides to die (1998), The Devil and Miss Prym (2000), the compilation of traditional tales in Stories for parents, children and grandchildren (2001), Eleven Minutes (2003), The Zahir (2005), The Witch of Portobello (2006) and Winner Stands Alone (to be released in 2009). During the months of March, April, May and June 2006, Paulo Coelho traveled to celebrate the 20th anniversary of his pilgrimage to Saint James of Compostella in 1986. He also held surprise book signings - announced one day in advance - in some cities along the way, to have a chance to meet his readers. In ninety days of pilgrimage the author traveled around the globe and took the famous Transiberrian train that took him to Vladivostok. During this experience Paulo Coelho launched his blog Walking the Path - The Pilgrimage in order to share with his readers his impressions. Since this first blog Paulo Coelho has expanded his presence in the internet with his daily blogs in Wordpress, Myspace & Facebook. He is equally present in media sharing sites such as Youtube and Flickr, offering on a regular basis not only texts but also videos and pictures to his readers. From this intensive interest and use of the Internet sprang his bold new project: The Experimental Witch where he invites his readers to adapt to the screen his book The Witch of Portobello. Indeed Paulo Coelho is a firm believer of Internet as a new media and is the first Best-selling author to actively support online free distribution of his work.

For a book that is so strikingly illustrated and written by an author held in such high esteem, this is a really rubbish book.

Out of context, the quotes which are all taken from his various published and unpublished works; make no sense. The book also came off as a little self-indulgent. Perhaps it's time to put away the writing implements, I mean, did anyone else read Adultery?

The text was also contradictory from one chapter to the next. This would be a great gift for someone who is totally ignorant of all forms of grammatical structure and basic sense.

It was also way too on the spiritual side for me. I really don't appreciate being told that God does everything and knows everything and should be the justification for all my choices and the reason I am with or without love. There were way to many references to God and quotes about God. I also really resent the fact that my iPhone auto-capitalises the word God.

This is my second attempt to read and enjoy a Coelho book and he frankly, to me anyway; is a talentless writer. But then I like books with more reality in them, I definitely have no appreciation for the hippie-esque, God-loving, fate embracing rubbish that he writes. If I didn't already own one more of his books that currently exists unread on my shelf, I wouldn't bother with any more of his work. Not even the fabled Alchemist.

Two stars. Mostly for the quality of Catalina Estrada's illustrations. Which were really the reason I picked this up at all.

An attractive book meant to be given as a gift. Little more than a collection of often contradictory and, for me, uninspiring Coelho quotes. His books are quick to read. Why not make a present out of something he crafted, not these extractions? Context has meaning. Give a whole book.

Ta książka nie była zła, to po prostu zwykłe cytaty z innych książek Paulo Coelho. Jak dla mnie było to zbyt religijne, ale zdaję sobie sprawę, że ten autor po prostu ma taki światopogląd i takie książki tworzy, a ja pomimo tego całkiem go lubię. Niektóre cytaty bardzo mi się spodobały, ale sama książka to nie było nic niezwykłego, takie po prostu myśli zebrane. Na pewno bardzo dobra opcja dla ulubieńców autora.

That was surely a time, in Omah Library back then, of moment and thinking for me. All the quiet parts, all those jokes and awkwardness. What is love? I thought. Yet, i don’t wanna hold the love only for romantic purposes. It has to be something simple yet wonderful, and profound. There i was, reading this book, and until now i can’t find another copy of this book in my country, not ever, not anymore.

This read was very refreshing! I think I read this just when I needed to. There were a few quotes that I thought would make more sense when in context, but some challenged my thinking and others were very encouraging!

This was a feel good book at a time that I needed to feel good and I enjoyed it!

This is just a series of quotes from different books. In my opinion it's an excellent way to practice some Spanish, a healthy outlook on love, and it makes me want to read the books the quotes come from. The art work is gorgeous as well :).

This book is hands down one of the most beautifully printed books I had ever had the chance of reading. I stumbled upon it while I was browsing through the selves in my local Library of the British Council. It had a beautifully done cover with a lot of beautiful artwork through out the book. The paper felt so good to the hand as well.

What about the content of the book? Did I like it? Yes, it was okay. But I am sure that it would have not been such an interesting read had it been printed as any other book would be printed. Reading the content of this book, which was basically a collection of quotes on Love by Paulo Coelho, collected from his previous work, was actually part of the experience delivered by the beautiful artwork printed on smooth glossy paper.

At some points certain quotes felt like they were being repeated, probably because the source is from the work of the same author. But I was kept engaged by the artwork that surrounded the words, beautifully wrapping them in colorful shapes that touched my very soul, creating a small opening so that the words themselves can seep into my mind. I really enjoyed this experience and I would definitely recommend this book for a different kind of reading experience.

Alkuun päästessä mietin, että onkohan tämä semikyynisen ateistin kirja lainkaan. No eipä oikein ollut.

Muutamia kivoja ajatelmia rakkaudesta siellä täällä, mutta suurin osa oli aika kliseisiä ja naiiveja. Osa oli jopa irrallisia kontekstistaan niin, että yksittäisessä lainauksessa ei ollut oikein mitään järkeä. Olisi ehkä pitänyt tuntea alkuteosta edes jotenkin, että olisi päässyt sisään näihin paremmin.

Rakkaus on ihana asia, mutta siitä on kyllä vaikeaa kirjoittaa ilman, että se kuulostaa pinnalliselta ja naiivilta. Kuvitelmat rakkaudesta ei ole yhtä kuin rakkaus todellisessa elämässä. Rakkaus on paljon monisyisempi ja syvempi asia kuin usein osataan kirjallisuudessa kuvata. Siksi ehkä hieman ristiriitainen ja kriittinen suhtautuminen yleisestikin taiteessa esiintyvään rakkauteen. Tämäkään teos ei vakuuttanut.

Tenía muchas ganas de leer algo de este autor ( por decir que me he leído algo suyo sabes tampoco porque me apasionara). En mi defensa diré que no leí bien la portada del libro. Claramente pone “Selección de citas” y yo decidí obviar esa parte y creer que era un poemario de amor.
Spoiler: no sale bien
Hay alguna cita mona y tal pero como bien dice el título son “citas”, por lo que no hay ningún tipo de hilo conductor ni estructura fija. Hay citas que son para enmarcar y otras que las puede haber escrito un niño de 5 años perfectamente.
Tiene 120 páginas y es un libro ilustrado, tampoco me voy a poner yo aquí especialita pero bueno… creo que este señor tiene cosas mejores

L’opera recensita è una raccolta di citazioni ed aforismi sull’amore tratti dalle opere principali dell’autore.

Geniali le idee di sviluppare il libro seguendo otto macro-aree e di avvalersi della bravura di Catalina Estrada (per quanto concerne il lavoro di design).

Personalmente non ho conferito la quinta stella nella recensione perché alcuni aforismi avrebbe potuto essere esclusi dall’opera in quanto poco conformi al tema amoroso

Ik vond 'The Alchemist' van deze schrijver écht geweldig. Maar deze serie quotes uit zijn boeken zeggen me heel weinig. Ik heb de context nodig, het verhaal eromheen. Het is niet voor niets als boek geschreven en niet als quote of zelfs gedicht. Er zijn natuurlijk mooie quotes uit boeken te halen die zo los van het verhaal ook geweldig zijn. Maar dat zijn er heel weinig.

Het is wel leuk vormgegeven met veel kleur.

I don't know how to rate this. It isn't a short book; I was surprised that I did not recognise any quotes from the books I have read of his and I have read quite a few! It inspired me to move on next to "Witch of Portobello", as many quotes came from that book. I was surprised that only one (?) quote came from "Veronika decides to die".

stel je voor dat je alle werken van Coelho digitaal bewaart, in een zoekrobot het woord 'liefde' schrijft en dan alle zinnen met dat woord in groepjes verzamelt volgens (discutabele) thema's, dan kom je uit bij dit boekje. Nogal teleurstellend, dus, behalve dan dat sommige uitspraken van Coelho echt wel raak kunnen treffen.

Coelho is een meester in rake uitdrukkingen en levenswijsheden. De enige reden waarom ik deze verzameling slechts een drie geef, is omdat overdaad schaadt: het is veel fijner en maakt veel meer (blijvende) indruk om al zijn wijze raad gaandeweg in zijn boeken te ontdekken, dan ze in lijstjes opgesomd te krijgen.
