Night Shift
Tracking a murderer on the streets of Chicago, two strong-willed detectives must work together on the case - as well as they get along in the bedroom. Homicide Detective Cullen Ryder is worried. Someone is brazenly killing drug pushers on the grimy backstreets of Chicago. When the monthly murders jump to weekly and draw the focus of the chief of police, the Chicago P.D. starts jumping, too. The chief assigns a special task force to the case, much to Ryder's chagrin. Handsome, dark-skinned Trevor Stone has testosterone and attitude to spare. As the head of the task force, he marches in giving orders right and left. Ryder doesn't like being bossed around, but he does like Stone. Maybe a little too much. When he discovers the feelings are mutual and the men fall into bed, neither is sure where the relationship is headed. Both know one thing - there's a murderer on the loose whom they need to catch, before he catches up with them.

People are getting murdered on the streets of Chicago, the police are running out of leads and despite their best intention the media are onto it and they are not making it easy for the police to carry on with the investigation.
In the spirit of moving the investigation along a Special Task Force is put in place and is set to go ASAP. The only problem with that is that Homicide Detective Cullen Ryder lead investigator on the original case had no idea the powers that be had formed a task force and secondly after doing all the grunt work he is pissed about someone else coming in and taking over and using all his resources.
Cullen is on the job for more than the glory and he knows when to swallow his pride and play ball. Meeting the lead on the task force - Trevor Stone will take using every power of tact that he has to play nice and think only of the people of Chicago.
Soon these two comes to blow and in more ways than one, despite the fact they both want the same thing they have different ideas of how to go about it. Cullen is passionate about what he does and he cares about the people whose life are twined around the cases he is involved in. Trevor on the other hand has his eyes on the prize that is city hall and the chief chair if he has anything to say about it.
When a break comes in the case Trevor jumps at this shot, Cullen is a bit more conservative in his reaction and his first thought is where will this leave is source.
If that was not enough heat in the office, Trevor goes after Cullen like a whirlwind, and while Cullen is attracted to Trevor he also has clear ideas about what he wants from the guy he hits the sack with and Trevor might just be in for a surprise both in the office and in the bedroom.
NIGHT SHIFT is another book in Total E-Bounds Lust Bites series and I fell in love in these guys and this cute story. Firstly let me say the the cover is just horrid but jumping past that I was reminded of why I like this authors style so much. Ms. Byrnes really does short story well, with Trevor and Cullen right at each others throat right from the opening moment it was a joy to see character that did not take crap and was willing to stick up for what they want.
The romance actually took a back seat to the other side story in the book and this was the plus of the book, because the secondary characters are fun, edgy and fearless in a city where everyone id scared to be on the street at night. There are bit your nail moments and some laugh out loud moments that easily cut the tension of the book and makes it all that more realistic and a perfect late evening read.
Ms. Byrnes wraps up the mystery with great aplomb and the romance suitably sorted itself out with some direct words and firm stance that will most certainly have me doing a reread in the very near future.

I love cop romances, especially of the m/m variety. And Night Shift is feeding that guilty pleasure, although it's only a quickie.
Ryder and Trevor are paired together to investigate a series of murders and two men couldn't be more different than them. But both happen to be gay and as we all know, opposites attract. So, while they work the night shift to catch a murderer, by day they immediately hit it off, which makes for quite some hot smexing scenes.
I really liked that they had a work related difference of opinion that gave their romantic relationship a bit of tension. And I also liked Ryder a lot, his attitude towards the street kids was amiable, but I had a hard time seeing what he saw in Trevor, who was a bit too arrogant and self assured from the start. Anyhow, their relationship developed in a fast but well dosed pace and they enjoyed me for a nice little while. Night Shift has some romance, sexy guys, hot smexing, good suspense and even some not too flat secondary characters, which is not bad at all for a short read.

March 7, 2010Even if it’s not an ‘80s setting, from the first sentences Night Shift reminded me a bit of the police detective television fiction of that period; Ryder, the Homicide detective that is more interesting in helping the lost boys in the street than in making a career in the Police Department, is a bit like Hunter, even if not so big; and Trevor, the handsome Afro American Vice detective, has a bit of Miami Vice in him, with his tailored suit and expensive town house. There is nothing that join them together if not being both gay; but even in that they are different: Ryder doesn’t give much importance to the thing, if you ask he tells, and indeed, he is not searching at all to climb the ladders of the hierarchy, and instead Trevor, even if not denying it, prefer to downplay a bit, to not ruin his chances at a career.
So the only solution is that, while they are pairing in an investigation on a serial killer who is murdering only drug dealers, during the night shift they behave like stranger and during the day they have monkey sex in each of the possible variety.
The story is basically an erotic romp, but I like the subtle “light” tone; you can find it in small sentences scattered in between the lines, like when Ryder wants to prove to Trevor that he is a very “busy” man, but he has nothing better to do if not shifting paper on his desk. In a way, even the “so no perfect” detectives have their merit in making the story light: Ryder after all, it’s not exactly a cold blooded detective, he seems more interested in find and help the kids on the street, then in find and arrest the killer, he should be a social assistant more than a cop; on the other hand Trevor seems to me more interested in playing the hot shot detective than in really doing his job, so much that he jumps to the first available conclusion to have a chance to appear on the night news.
In a way they are more interesting like that, otherwise the story would have been like many other, playing along the line of the perfect dream cop; it’s no accident that, at the beginning, I said that they reminded me Hunter or Miami Vice… in both shows, the cops were less than perfect.

A serial killer is picking off drug dealers and Ryder (another book where they go by last names) and his team are having no luck. Stone is a hotshot up and coming AA detective brought in to lead a task force. Ryder isn't thrilled and he and Stone get off to a rocky start but within hours are fucking each other's brains out. So they work together while sleeping together and arrest a suspect that Stone is sure is guilty. Ryder knows something is hinky and his snitches offer him some info that supports this. As well, Stone has big aspirations and as no desire to be an out and proud cop like Ryder is. Seems Ryder was right about a conspiracy and Ryder's snitches manage to help them catch the real killer at great risk. My biggest complaint is this book moved really fast. They meet at 2:00 pm and are in bed by 6:30. Whoa. I also wanted more info about the murder case because I didn't really understand it all and why the killer and his henchmen did it, but it was only 60 pages so I guess you can only fit so much in. But it was an okay story about two cops working together. Oh and yes, both guys on the cover are white, but that cover is used for tons of books at that publishers.

I have about twenty reviews to write today so I'm just going to paste my notes here. Maybe I'll turn them into an actual review at some point.
Really tacky that before doing anything like touch or kiss, he just whips it out. Perhaps it's realistic but I found it a little crass.
Sex is so not hot and all they've done is a bj and yet he's saying how close he feels to the man.
Way too casual with CIs. Would get them killed.
They wouldn't publicize they'd solved the case. Innocent until proven guilty plus they'd look stupid if they were wrong. Might say they'd made a arrest.
Went from mad to lusty sappy in seconds. I don't buy their love.
Just walks out into the open during ?
No peril despite lots of opportunity and but the character acted like there was because a gun was pointed at him for one sentence. So dumb.
1.5 I'll round up because I'm feeling nice.

Really 3.5 stars :) If this had been longer and the story more developed, I would've given it 4 stars. I'm greedy and I liked these characters and the serial killer plot needed more, but still it was a great short story

Fun, fast-paced and packed with georgeous cops. A bit short-handed as for the intrigue, but it is not the purpose of the story, I'm sure.
