2041 Sanctuary (2: Let There Be Light)

In the darkness, you can’t always trust the light.

A year has passed since the asteroid AG5 impacted off the South African coastline and civilisation teeters on the brink of collapse beneath the all-encompassing dust cloud which encircles the planet. As those on the surface struggle to survive a devastating impact winter, the world’s finest assemble on the International Space Station for a covert mission that could change the course of all life on Earth. But as the clock ticks down to zero hour, it’s clear … everything is not as it seems.

Back in the United States, the once all powerful Professor Steiner, visionary engineer and former Director General of the Global Meteor Response Council’s vast Subterranean Programme, is about to be tried for masterminding a horrific act of terrorism. As calls for the death penalty gain momentum, those that sit in judgement are unaware that Steiner holds the key not just to their survival, but to the survival of the entire human race. If Professor Steiner is to survive, his only chance lies with an FBI agent who would see him dead ten times over and his nemesis, the world’s most wanted criminal, the elusive cyber terrorist, Da Muss Ich, both of whom hide secrets of their own. Elsewhere, Richard Goodwin, deposed Director of USSB Steadfast, and Sarah Morgan, the English archaeologist, remain marooned in separate locations within the colossal underground realm known as Sanctuary. Both seek a way to the surface, but while neither will meet, their shared purpose will attract the attention of another denizen of the deep, and as Goodwin already knows to his cost: in the darkness, you can’t always trust the light.

Robert Storey

As a young boy Robert always dreamed about becoming a fiction writer, but it never occurred to him that he could follow that dream. Some years later fate intervened and he was struck down with a debilitating neurological condition, which was brought on by a car accident some years earlier. Rendered housebound on and off for well over a decade, he thought his condition signaled an end to his life, but Robert had failed to realize something ... he was wrong, and in his darkest hours he turned to writing as a means of escape. Never thinking anyone would read his work, let alone like it, Robert has now published four books in his bestselling Ancient Origins series and plans on writing four more, along with a fantasy series and a number of thrillers. His condition still keeps him indoors more than he would like, but it doesn't stop him from writing, and more importantly it doesn't stop him from dreaming...

Robert currently lives in the county of Kent in England and is a lover of science, archaeology and the mysterious. He has a passion for films, specifically action and adventure, science fiction and blockbuster thrillers, but as he got older he realised new releases rarely matched the classics he'd already had the privilege of watching, and it was partly this frustration that led him to create a world of his own.

Overall this series is a 4.5 for me. Love it. It’s fascinating. I just truly hope the fourth book is not as exasperating as the third.
This book is so frustrating. The series is exciting and right up my alley as far as the science and history and now religion and horror twists thrown in. But so often I find myself asking where is it going? What’s with the light? When will we finally get some answers instead of just more exciting action sequences that leave me scratching my head even more? You can only build up the suspense for so long before it’s just annoying and all the excitement isn’t effective anymore. I’ll definitely read the 4th book and I’m sure it will be amazing because I’ll finally have some answers. Hopefully. This book just did not need to be so long and drawn out.
Also the phrasing and English terms by American characters kill me. Americans use flashlights, not torches. Americans drive through police barricades in a truck, not a lorrey. And American marines do not say ooyah, they say oorah. Just to name a few. If the setting was in Europe, fine. And for the English characters, fine. It’s just messed up often enough that it irks me.
Ok. Said my peace. Onto the fourth book.

Already you can feel story getting too much mixed up with different conspiracy technologies. Author has overplayed his hand here and story is not any more believable. You can even see direct loans from Star Wars and Assassin's Creed :D

Nice

Good read to continue the series. The ending was a bit different than the previous ones, but still cant wait to continue reading.

I had previously read the first book in this series, so when I saw a set with the first three books I decided to continue on with the series. I'm convinced this was a very good decision. I've become hooked following the various groups underground as well as the above ground group, as they each go about their own path to achieve their goals. Interestingly enough in book three the goals and members of two of the groups intersect above ground with a fair amount of backstabbing and intrigue. Of course the other groups have their own issues to contend with as well as trying to survive in their underground environs.

Robert Storey has created a world that is on one hand familiar but at the same time very foreign and at times very inhospitable. I'm looking forward to starting the fourth book in this series. I highly recommend this series for those readers who enjoy a little alternative science mixed in with a dystopian world that is filled with adventure, action, suspense and some political intrigue.

The third book in the series continues the story of various groups of people trying to figure out how to survive the coming destruction of the surface of the earth. Joiner continues his egocentric, vicious actions. A group of people is stuck underground and trying to find a way to escape to the surface and find another place to stay but there's something killing them. Sarah, Trish and Jason meanwhile are still trying to find a way to the surface and they may not survive the experience.

There's also mention of the Freemasons and the Skull and Bones society along with a lot of biblical material relating to 'giants in those days.' Their buildings remain but they are all gone. (Did they do what the Krell did in Forbidden Planet and get so advance they became insane spirits?)

I really like the descriptions of the underground ruins. The characters continue to be well done and there's lots of action.

Good series

This series is really good and as far as I know, unique. And I like all of the parallel story lines taking place place. However, and I do not know how too articulate it, there is something that I don't like about the writing style. What that something is, I am not sure. Maybe I think the writing is to "wordy" or maybe it is something else? Either way while I enjoy the books, each one leaves me a bit drained so I have to take a break and read something else before I read the net book.

Spellbinding!

You will not want to put this book down. As the storyline develops the characters grow upon you. The plot twists are not predictable and makes you hang from the edge of your seat in anticipation of the new twists. I am starting 2042 immediately. You must read this entire series.

This one is starting to need a bit of extra suspension of disbelief about some of the characters suspension of disbelief. Felt like it was spread a bit thin with all the storylines at times compared to how much happens in them (I guess there's not without reason that the 3rd book ended up being 2 books).

Wow. The best yet!

Non-stop action. Thrilling me to keep turning the pages (albeit virtual ones). But I was unable to out this book down. Not as much back story to this one but it's not needed as long as you read the prior books in the series. It flows straight off the back of the previous.
Wonderful book. And I do mean Full of Wonder!

Not sure why I kept reading

This series started with some interesting premises, but at this point has degenerated into bits and pieces of conspiracy theories, bad guys that have no redeeming features at all, obsessive- compulsive and manic players, and now...drum roll...horror.

Sorry I bought these. Not worth reading, even if free.

What a disappointment...

It was too dragged out... Got too far away for too long from the main characters and the main theme of the previous books...

One can definitely say this is an entertaining read, fast-paced, dynamic and exciting. However, the problem is that it grows ever more cartoonish as it progresses. The villains move to the status of super-villains over time and then move to psychopathic incompetents. Heroines move from serious academics to lovelorn super-heroines then move to have a reckless disregard for anything but their own self. Cabals within cabals within governments all make the Illuminati appear as competent as a cub scout troupe looking to advance their own bizarre schemes which, it would appear, seem mainly to spite themselves. The whole book is riddled with nationalistic fervour for a country that the author doesn't live in and the whole jingoistic deal is sealed by a more than casual disregard for any life at all.

That doesn't mean that it's not entertaining though. If you wanted a book to make you think as well as enjoy the action, then this isn't for you. If you just want a romp with violence and cartoonish characterisations then this will fit the bill. I am going to persevere with the rest of the series because I cannot really see a way that this outlandish set of circumstances will play out. I will probably groan aloud at the denouement but at least it will have been entertaining

book 3 goes NO WHERE! Again it feels like different story's in the book. We go for chapters on 1 persons plight and we forget about the other 3 story's that are happening. You would think by now end of book 3 that at least one of these characters/story merge together but NO. This series is way to long. The author is just making filler so you buy the next book. This was available on Kindle Unlimited otherwise I would have quit after book 2. 6 books is much to long and drawn out for this. I find myself skimming chapters.

Indiana Jones meets conspiracy theorists meets popular scifi movies. This book just wrote itself because all the author had to do was to link different scenes from different movies together. He still has issues with describing sex and violence but hey, religious idiots he can write about very well.
Still, despite my eye rolls, here I am, reading it, giving this book again four stars (grudginly) and starting on the next book. I see the irony there. Thank the gods I no longer have to suffer Rebecca.

More sociopaths

Well, the ultimate sociopath Sarah has yet to die an excruciating slow death. Sad, as I believe the author sees her as some kind of heroine. But her behavior is classic sociopath - now she has managed to get one of her companions killed. I am sure we will be subjected to endless pages of fake remorse. And of course we now have the super conspiracy on top of the ordinary conspiracy. I SLOG on hoping to find the giants.

Again Robert Storey has.surpassed

himself in the writing of Let There Be Light. Mind boggling descriptions, action packed, all encompassing and heart stopping action,, intrigue, grave danger all written with a no nonsense attitude daring you to imagine and understand his vision. If you haven't read the series yet, start from the beginning. It is well worth it. As this book does, you will be delighted and intrigued by the genius of Robert Storey. A must read!

Robert Storey must have had an amazing mind full of detail as indicated not only in his story telling but just take a gander at his appendixes. He created a world of detail in his characters, locations and organizations that is truly admirable. Even in his characters who only have a brief appearance he gave them a background detail that is not always divulged in the story but clearly he carried on the whiteboard in his head.

Intriguing, complex story continues

Storey is excellent at complex, world building. While this book jumps between character groups, its easy to maintain the separate threads. Because it is so complex, some characters are not realized at their true potential depth , but as series continues some are definitely becoming more complete.
This series is a mental commitment but one that so far seems worth the effort.

Great except that the author had better keep some key characters alive.

It's very thrilling and even more than the other books of the series. But I find very sad that the author judged necessary to kill, sometimes wantonly, so many key characters that we learned to love, such asTrish , Joseph, Magnussen and perhaps lieutenant Manaus.

Addictive as certain drugs !

If you are looking for a page turner then you have chosen the right place. The imagination of the author is brilliant beyond words. The possibility of these events and adventure are so well stated that in the very deep recess of your mind you can give the story a certain validation. Very enjoyable and hard to put down !

Needs better proofreading

If this story line was written by an American there would not be the metric system. There wouldn't be too many references to out of Country jargon/slang. Don't get me wrong, I was able.to understand it.all, but too much foreign influence and spelling. Great story so far, just better proof reading.

Absolutely fantastic

I am completely hooked on this series of books. The pace and consistency of the story has remained throughout the three books I have read. It is perfect for those who enjoy conspiracy theories, ancient aliens and ancient history. The characters are well thought out and believable. I'm going to read the next book now.

This is the last in this series that I will read. I enjoyed some of the characters and story lines, but it has gotten so convoluted, I just don’t care. All of the archeology, history, government conspiracies, and end of the world weren’t enough for this writer. So, now, he has verged into horror. That is a genre that I don’t want to read.

So many story threads. Try to keep up.

This book was meant to be the second half of the second book in the series. There are so many twists and turns, but the saga seems to drag itself along in a frantic race against itself.

I will, of course, read the next installment.
