Rate this book
Business is sweet for pastry chef Indira Aguilar. Her indie bakery, Cake Pan, is fast becoming the talk of the wedding circuit for its unique take on cakes and homespun creations for the modern bride, garnering national recognition and drawing in celebrity clients. But while her professional life is blossoming, her personal life is crumbling.

Indira may have a talent for blending buttercream into bliss, but when it comes to relationships, she’s got a lot to learn. Considering that the love of her life, Josh Oliver, is not only married, but also runs the award-winning pastry department of her fiercest competition, Crystal Cove Resort, Indira puts much more at stake than just her heart when she ends her affair with him.

Rumors begin to fly as the small seaside community of Long Beach learns of her secret relationship, and Indira must defend not only her actions, but her wedding business and her reputation while trying to maneuver the choppy heartbreak waters of starting over, finding new love, and facing her past. With the support of friends and family, a fondness for butter, and a determined spirit, Indira may just bake her way back to happiness and possibly into the heart of Crystal Cove’s dishy new chef, Noah. But one thing is certain. Where there’s heartbreak, there must be cake.

'Heartbreak Cake' is Cindy Arora's debut and quite an enjoyable read. I don't know about you, but whenever I hear the word cake, or baking, or pastry I'm reminded of British Chick lit, because there are many chick lit authors who go for a bakery as a setting or have Chefs as their MSc. However, I was surprised to see an author from the States writing such a book. But please don't judge me, there could be plenty of US authors who wrote such books, however I've not encountered them.

Anyway, this book is about romance and cake, oh and heartbreak. It's centered around Indira Aguilar, the owner of Cake Pan, a cozy little place fameous for their cakes. The business seems to be blossoming with more and more wedding orders, however Indira is not having such a success when it comes to her love life. She's been in a long (and exhausting) relationship with a married guy. Yup, you heard that right, Josh Oliver, the love of her life is married. At the same time, he's sort of a rival when it comes to the business, since he's running the pastry department of Crystal Cove Resort.

I know, I know, cheaters were never my favourites too, but there's something about Indira, something warm and friendly, you just can't help but like her. She was aware Josh was married when she started their relationships, and yes, there were couple of moments when I wanted to give her a good shake and wake her up from hibernation, but then I realized this whole 'imperfection' made her seem more real. We all have flaws, and all make mistakes her's being for getting involved with the wrong dude. But she's not the only one to blame for this. Things get complicated, as expected, and soon her and her bakery's reputation is on the line. She becomes the center of the gossip and is under a great stress. But as in most chick lits, you have nothing to fear, for Indira's life will take a new course.

I really enjoyed Heartbreak Cake. It's fun, easy to read and yummy. All those cakes and beautiful dishes sure didn't help my diet, but honestly, this was a great debut. I think Cindy did a great job with creating her MC, and I honestly thought I'm gonna judge Indira or even hate her, but I didn't. On the contrary, she was very likable and seemed very real to me. For this, I applaud to Ms Arora. Would I be reading more of her books? Of course, I think Ms Arora has the potential and talent, and I'm definitely looking forward to her new one, whenever that happens.

At First Sight: Life should be sweet for pastry chef Indira Aguilar: she and her best friend Pedro own and run Cake Pan Shoppe - a small but trendy cake story that is quickly becoming a staple of the Laguna Beach community - and they are becoming a hit with the less traditional brides.

They even got in on the biggest wedding of the year, which is quite the coup even if the bride keeps changing her mind on the theme for the wedding.

But there is another side to Indira's life that isn't going so well: everything that has to do with Josh Oliver, her former boss at the Crystal Cover Resort, where Indira used to work.

With the return of Josh absentee wife Valentina a few months prior, and the end of Indira's affair with him, rumors start running wild in the community, threatening to take Indira's shop and pull it under, unless she can keep it together.

In the midst of all of it, she meets Noah, the hot new chef at Crystal Cove, who might be interested on being more than just friends.

Second Glance: I really loved Heartbreak Cake mostly because I really loved Indira. She's in her mid-thirties and striking out on her own professionally, confident in her skills set yet always trying to improve, she's smart and driven and has lots of talent. But she has also made lots of bad choices in her personal life. Her relationship with Josh was complicated as they come; and things weren't black and white at all. Plus, she recognizes she made a big mistake and ends things and deals with the fall out.

I respected her for it, in a way I rarely respect or even put-up with characters that indulge in wildly misguided love or romantic naiveté. Indira was one tough cookie and a decent one at that; and for me this book was really all about her and how she healed her own broken heart with the support of her family and her true friends, and the thing she loves doing the most: baking.

Yes, there is a very strong romantic element to the story - and Noah was a very nice and swoony love interest, I really liked him, even in his imperfections (like his stubbornness and bit of hot-headedness) - but Heartbreak Cake was about more than that, and definitely more chick lit than a straight romance.

Also, I loved how they book showed the curative power of baking, of creating, or just doing something that you really, really love.

Bottom Line: Thumbs up for Heartbreak Cake. It's a charming debut novel with a very strong central character, a delightful cast of secondary characters - I particularly loved Simon and Pedro - and lots of baked goods (warning, though, this book will make you super hungry). And, in conclusion: croissants!

Favorite Quote: "One always needs hope after a break up, I think, as I remove the foil from the milk chocolate bar and begin to chop it. A beacon to remind you that you will survive and eventually, thrive"

In her debut novel, Heartbreak Cake, author Cindy Arora weaves a delightfully sinful chick lit story that is full of romance, heartbreak, hope, friendship, self-discovery, and to-die-for yummy desserts!

Set in the seaside community of Long Beach, California, and told in the first person narrative, sassy Indira Aguilar, a pasty chef and co-owner of Cake Pan Bakeshoppe, takes the reader on a sugar filled journey as she recovers from breaking off a four year secret affair with Josh Oliver, a married director of the food and beverage department at the ritzy Crystal Cove Resort. Tired of being someone's secret mistress, an option and not a priority, and settling for crumbs, Indira decides to stop wasting her time on empty promises and move on with her life. A little heartbreak cake and a sexy guest chef at Crystal Cove named Noah Cavatelli might just be what Indira needs to find her way back to herself, and find love and happiness too ... unless Josh's Italian soap opera wife Valentina gets her way and ruins Indira's reputation and business.

Heartbreak Cake was such a fun read, it is a story that is full of wit, humor, romance, and hope that easily draws the reader into Indira's life. You can't help but like this sassy lady and embrace her as she finds herself after making the mistake of loving the wrong kind of man, and risking everything to get her life back on track.

Indira has a wonderful support system in her best friends Rebecca Potts and Pedro, her bakery partner, and mentor Simon Ford, who have her back and guide her with love and a little dose of sarcastic reality. Add in Noah, a new love interest who will give Indira what she needs to help put her embarrassing mistake of an affair in the past, and with a little help from heartbreak cake along the way, Indira might just be able to bounce back and start her life anew.

With a cast of quirky characters who are engaging; witty dialogue and humorous interactions that will keep you in stitches; and decadent descriptions of cakes, pastries, and other yummy desserts that are tantalizingly interwoven throughout the story and will keep you salivating and reaching for the nearest chocolate bar; Heartbreak Cake is a thoroughly enjoyable and romantic chick lit story that will leave a smile on your face.

So like Indira and Rebecca say: "When the world hands you lemons, eat cake!"

This was a really enjoyable, surprisingly light read considering the stresses and strains the main character was going through!

Indira has got herself into quite a tricky situation and all because of love. She has got involved with a married man and his wife wants Indira shamed. Fair enough I hear you say, but whilst everyone is making assumptions about her, there is more to Josh's wife Valentina than people know, and more to the story. However Indira finds her business at stake due to working in the Wedding cake industry and the women in the community begin to believe that she is a groom stealer! And even though Indira ends the affair, no one will even look at her or talk to her. That is until she meets Noah, the incredibly handsome Crystal Cove Resort Chef. Will Indira save her business and her heart at the same time?

I absolutely loved the main character Indira and I was on her side ALL the way. She is a brilliant and I thought an incredibly strong heroine. She has been put in an unfair and unjust situation and I really felt for her that she fell for Josh who just couldn't seem to give her is whole love and returned to his wife, despite what she did!

The setting for this in Los Angeles was great and I really felt like I was there in that warm, sunny climate and it was nice to escape from the freezing cold weather in the UK! AND I loved the descriptions of the food! Seriously had me craving cake and I so desperately didn't want Indira's business to go down!

When Indira meets Noah, I was so excited for her. Noah is incredibly sweet and caring and he genuinely wanted to look out for Indira and was one of the only few people that stood by her throughout the whole ordeal. I thought finally she will see sense that Josh is not the right man for her!

This was a lovely story about heartbreak, learning from your mistakes, friendship and cake. A brilliant story if you have ever had your heart broken .

I absolutely adored this book. In the beginning, I was a little unsure because of the whole affair, but the characters were so relate able and the food description made me hungry. I also really wanted to live in Indira's apartment.

Review for Chick Lit Central (www.chicklitcentral.com)

I’ve read my fair share of books that revolve around food. I chalk it up to being a self-professed foodie. I find myself gravitating towards anything with delicacies and if there’s a cherry on top of some tasty little dessert morsel, even better. What I didn’t count on, however, were the intricacies that surround Heartbreak Cake. There’s plenty of mouth-watering desserts and goodies, but there’s also plenty of drama, intrigue, and chaotic moments that make this a total page-turner.

Indira owns the Cake Pan, an up-and-coming sensation best known for it’s creative cakes and delicious desserts. While she holds it together in the kitchen, the rest of her world is falling apart. She’s fallen in love with a married man, who in turn has professed his undying love for her, yet he’s never truly available. While they forged a kinship based on baking, it doesn’t help that he’s the one who becomes her biggest competition, managing a restaurant which far exceeds the Cake Pan monetarily. Indira has to make a lot of tough decisions where her heart and her head are concerned, especially when an opportunity arises in the form of a very rich client who needs a wedding caterer. This could catapult the Cake Pan into the stratosphere, should she get the account, and should her former lover not stand in the way of her success.

Rumors fly. Soon everyone knows about Indira’s indiscretion, which only hurts her and her business. Somehow she’s the one left with the scarlet letter on her chest and has to figure out a way out of the mess. How can she move past this, while attempting to heal a broken heart?

I loved the realism behind this book. I felt like I was reading someone’s story, not just a story line. Human nature dictates that we’re bound to make mistakes in order to learn and grow in our lives. I could see real growth and progression for Indira. It certainly helps when she comes face to face with a potential love interest along the way, and has to make a choice between the past and the future. While there’s plenty of cake in Heartbreak Cake, there’s also plenty of fun, a little pain, and a lot of love.

What could be better than cake after a heartbreak? More cake! This book is a delight from beginning to end with a kick butt heroine who is a master at baking, but a brilliant flop when it comes to relationships. I fell in love with Indira the moment I met her, and I was cheering for her the whole way through the book. And the food. Oh my gawd. I was drooling over my iPad while reading, and probably put on 10 pounds thanks to Ms. Arora's beautiful descriptions of so many delicious dishes that I just *had* to start eating a cupcake a day. Yes, this book will drive you to eat! And maybe even bake! But beyond the scrumptious desserts is a story of a girl looking for true love. And while she might not make all the best decisions when it comes to her love life, you can bet that her actions all come straight from the heart. If you've ever had a broken heart, you will adore this story of a girl learning how to mend hers with good friends, family, fun, lots of butter, and maybe even a new sweetie. One that won't just leave her with crumbs...Definitely a must read for Chick Lit fans everywhere and anyone who loves a juicy tale with funny characters, witty dialogue and enough frosting to induce a sugar coma.

This was a delightful quick read perfect for the beach! There was no lull in the entire book (yay).

Indira is the main character who has followed her heart and fallen in love with a married man. When wifey comes back to reclaim her family, Indira can not let go of the family that she has been apart of for 4 years. Her indiscretion has become public knowledge and is threatening to destroy her personal and professional life.

Indira is a strong, intelligent and likable character that is easy to relate too. Everyone has made a mistake in the love arena and has disappointed themselves; Indira is no different. Her ability to translate her emotional turmoil into delicious, unique desserts help catapult her bakery into a local hotspot.

One aspect that I loved is Indira's support system. Although, Indira may have found herself in a vulnerable spot in her life she has a wonderful support system. If only everyone has a friend like Rebecca!

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a little romance and a lot of delicious desserts to daydream about!

I bought this thinking it was from a small, local publishing house. I like books. I like supporting small businesses. Sold.

The “publisher,” though, seems to exist for the sole purpose of allowing authors to claim their book isn’t technically self published. Heartbreak Cake contains all of the common problems of self-published books: grammatical errors, typos, and mostly, a desperate need for an editor. The narrative is rough, full of logical inconsistencies and odd choices and time jumps. Also – and this is new for me – the ink changes over the course of the book. Sometimes it was matte. Sometimes it was shiny. And when it was shiny, it was so very shiny I had to take care with how I angled it while reading, otherwise it would pick up the light from the lamp and shine in my eyes.

Like I said, that was a first.

Heartbreak Cake is a cute idea for a rom com – a baker of wedding cakes tries to get over her ex – but the book, as published, isn’t ready for primetime. Ms. Arora seems a lovely person, but Heartbreak Cake not a good book. Not recommended.

Warning: Don't start reading this book if you have no tasty food in the house.

I thoroughly enjoyed Heartbreak Cake and sped right through it. It has all the elements that I love in a lighthearted read--quirky characters, hilarious moments, unexpected twists and a spunky heroine you can really get behind. In addition, Cindy Arora is absolutely brilliant when it comes to description. She paints such a vivid picture, it's uncanny. Which brings me to...

the mouth-watering descriptions of all the delicious foods featured in this book. Holy smokes. This is food porn at its finest. I recommend hitting your local bakery before cracking open Heartbreak Cake and make a night of it. Great food and great books. What could be better?

This book reminded me a little of the scene in When Harry Met Sally when Carrie Fisher realizes that the married man she is seeing will never leave his wife. Indira is in a similar situation and is blinded by what she thinks is love. It doesn't help that he works for a competitor and his wife is trying to ruin Indira's business by spreading malicious rumors (while somewhat based in fact, not totally) and Indira has to reevaluate her life and what is important.

I did get hungry reading this book while they discussed all of the yummy desserts they were making.

The characters dealt with real life situations but at times Indira was annoying when dealing with Josh (the married man).

I read this book in one sitting. I loved Indira I mean we have all made bad decisions in our lives. I believe that Josh really loved her, but he was torn between her and keeping his family together. I don't think that justifies the way he treated her. Well when her life fell apart Noah entered and I gotta say I really really liked him from the start. This book not only had me pissed off at certain situations, but I thought it was funny and just an easy fun read. Who has never needed a little heartbreak cake in their life!!!

Yummy read

Really enjoyed this story. I loved reading about all of the desserts that were described so beautifully and the running of a bakery. The story line was sweet & sad at the same time.
