Toulouse-Lautrec: Vida y Obra

Rate this book

I have a lady boner for Toulouse-Lautrec so I absolutely love this book. It's small and slim, allowing me to take it anywhere. It's a nice showcase of his artworks but also contains sketches, discarded versions of his paintings, photographs of his close circles and even paint subjects.

If you're looking for a comprehensive overview of Lautrec's life and oeuvre, this may tick that box. The author neatly covers the artist's life from birth through death defining Lautrec's several artistic stages. Numerous illustrations of his work along with indications of what private and public collection displays it can be helpful. Contextual listings of major events happening in the world are also included.

The writer Ulbo Felbinger's illustrated biography of Heri de Toulouse-Lautrec is a beautiful introduction to the “Life and Work” of Toulouse-Lautrec. “Life and Work” is the subtitle of the book. The book is part of the Art in Focus series. The book is translated from German into English by Paul Ashton with the help of the firm of Goodfellow & Egan. Toulouse-Lautrec lived between 1864 and 1901. Each of the eight chapters of this short book begins with a timeline of events in both Toulouse-Lautrec's life and the World's history during his lifetime. The book is only 91 pages but covers a great deal of ground. The book has large print text and is very readable. The book includes a glossary of terms used in the text. Each chapter is centered around different years in Toulouse-Lautrec’s life. The book covers every day from a two-page biographic stretch of Toulouse-Lautrec’s Mother (22-23) to a two-page spread called “The Techniques of Lithography” (46-47). The book includes an “Index of Works” (94) and an “Index of Names” (94-95) at the end of the book. A large portion of the artwork printed in the book comes from the Musee Toulouse-Lautrec in Abi, France, the birthplace of Toulouse-Lautrec (23). The book is a beautiful introduction to the “Life and Work” of Toulouse-Lautrec.
