She enjoys catching readers off guard with the endings of her stories, but insists that "[it] isn't what her fiction is about", but rather more about the development of her characters. Discussing her novels with the Toronto Star in 2008, she said "I might not write fiction in the literary sense. But I write very well. My characters are good. My dialog is good. And my stories are really involving. I'm writing exactly the kind of books I like to write. And they're the kind of books I like to read. They're popular commercial fiction. That's what they are."

I have been reading Joy Fielding for as long as she has been writing. This book was on rapid reads at my library and I grabbed it and this is, I guess, the only thing that has kept me reading. It has almost no plot. Just two brothers and their failing love interests and competitiveness and their inability to know who they are as men. A shallow book which....in the middle..seems to be going nowhere. A friend of one of the brothers has a gun and a sociopathic personality and a biiiiig deal is made of this. Somehow, this is supposed to make a climax happen in the book. This, this the fact that one of the brothers is having an affair with a married woman..... Did I tell you too much. Don't bother...it's not worth the read!

Joy Fielding usually writes a great story, but this one just fell flat. First the book meananders along with the promise of something exciting happening, but yet, nothing much ever does. All the action and twists occur at the very end of the book, and the biggest twist was far to implausible and here is why: (spoiler alert here): At the end, it turns out that the two female characters had basically plotted the entire scenerio, the murder of Suzy's abusive husband. The story claims that Suzy and Kristin had met many years before while both were wardens of the State Child Protective Services, and fell in love. But much earlier in the story, Suzy does not even meet her soon to be husband Dr. Dave, until she is 22 years old and is still living with her parents. Dr. Dave marries her within months after meeting, when her parents move away and "this time" she does not go along with her abusive father and her much abused mother. So when was she a ward of the state and in a home for Children's Protective Sevices and met Kristin ????? This just seems to be a GLARING mistake in the entire story and makes me want to beat my head against a wall for wasting my reading time on such crap. I expected SO much more from Joy Fielding. Hard to believe that she even wrote this book.

July 17, 2010Wow, was this book ever terrible. I grabbed it from the "New Fiction" shelf at the library while there with children in tow. I thought it was something by the author of _Bridget Jones' Diary_, but that is HELEN Fielding. So instead of light, British chick lit, I got a "thriller." But it was really, really bad. The characters acted randomly, swinging wildly from docile to aggressive, good to bad. It wasn't so bad I couldn't finish it, but lord, it wasn't good.

Joy Fielding is a bestselling author, but for some reason this is the first book that I have read by her. Fielding explores what happens when a small bet turns into a big amount of trouble.
It all starts in a bar called The Wild Zone. Two brothers Will and Jeff, who don't know each other very well and couldn't be more different and Jeff's best friend Tom, are drinking having a good time and looking to have some fun. Enter Suzy, who has come into the Wild Zone a few times, but is looking for something more than just a random hook up, she is looking for someone anyone to help her escape from her abusive husband. But one bet by the men at the bar and everything is about to change for all of them Will, Jeff, Suzy and Tom all their lives are about to spiral out of control and not everyone can handle the ride.
As stated above, Fielding is a bestselling author, but judging by this book, I do not understand why, I was very disappointed with it. This is one of her newer books, therefore, I was expecting a lot more out of Fielding in regards to story and plot line. The main problem with this book is that Fielding attempts to do too much. Too many "main" characters, too many subplots, and not enough focus of the main issue that is introduced, getting Suzy away from her abusive husband. While the subplots were interesting, there were just too many of them for them to be fully developed, it almost felt like a mishmash of different ideas for novels rolled into one.
Where Fielding does excels is in character development, and while I did not like any of the characters within this novel, that does not mean that they were not well developed or well thought out. You got to know each character's personality and you knew how each was going to react in each situation. Personally, I found all the characters depressing, whiny and at times very immature. Each had a personal issue whether it was more recent or from the past, there appeared to be no light at the end of the tunnel for any of the characters. Even when the characters had something good going on in their life (however, these events are few and far between in this book) or their relationships grew into something that would have made other individuals happy none of the characters really get there. It almost felt that Fielding was punishing each of the characters in this book, that none of them could have a truly happy moment, as I stated above, the character were really depressing most of the time.
I will say that the villain within this book is quite scary and very human. He was the epitome of an abuser, manipulator and controller of his wife. I liked how Dave was a Doctor and took care of others, but at home his care for his wife was very lacking. Fielding did a good job on getting Dave just right and very scary real. I could hear this creepy voice in my head every time he spoke to Suzy.
I was disappointed in this book, it could have been so much more as I think that the premise had promise. I think that Fielding just attempted to do too much in this novel and lost her way some where. I am unsure if I will read another book by Fielding, maybe one of her earlier books that actually was a best seller. Let me know if you have great reads by Fielding that I should pick up.

Despite low ratings on goodreads I like the book. On the cover of slovenian edition it is said it's sexually charged thriller with a lot of unexpectecd twists. For me it was a fast, light read and only the last two chapters or so felt like I was really reading a thriller.

Although it was a fairly simple plot, it was written well enough to make it difficult to put down. A lonely woman goes to the bar and befriends the bartender, Kirstin. Her boyfriend, Jeff, his best friend, Tom and his step brother, Will are at the bar. Jeff decides to make a bet to see which of the 3 of them can persuade the woman to go home with them. Both Jeff and Tom have been to Afghanistan, Tom was dishonorably discharged after a event with an Afghanistan woman. He is hot headed and angry. The woman chooses Will even though most women choose Jeff, his older better looking brother. Will later discovers Kirstin told Susie to choose him. He has a low self-esteem even though he has almost finished his doctorate in Philosophy. The woman, Susie, is married to a radiologist and is in an abusive relationship. Susie is cunning and devises a way to get one of the men to kill her husband. Tom's wife leaves him but Tom is the kind of person that will not accept any responsibility for any of his faults, everything that goes wrong is someone else's fault. The book weaves a good story and you want to get to the end to find out what happens.

Viel kann ich zu dem Buch auch nicht sagen. Es war ok. Kann man lesen, aber muss man nicht. Es war jetzt keine Glanzleistung von der Autorin.
Die Charaktere und die Geschichte sind flach. Teilweise gab es spannende Momente, aber das wars dann auch schon. Man konnte es gut lesen und das Ende war auch auf einmal sehr überraschend, auch wenn es echt weit hergeholt ist.

Der Klappentext und der Titel passen nicht zum Inhalt des Buches.
Ja, die Wette wird abgeschlossen, aber alles andere... Die meiste Zeit geht es um den fast schon geisteskranken Tom, der eigentlich keine wirkliche Hauptperson ist, wie er Frauen terrorisiert, sexualisiert und angreift sowohl verbal als auch körperlich. Absolut abartig, aber so sollte der Charakter ja auch sein.
Die eigentliche Handlung plätschert so vor sich und ich fragte mich oft, wann es denn zum angeteaserten Showdown kommen soll. Der passiert auf den letzten 20 Seiten und unfassbar unspektakulär. Der allerletzte Plottwist hat mich dann aber doch noch einmal überrascht, aber dann auch nichts mehr rausholen können.
Ich bin froh keinen einzigen Cent für dieses Buch ausgegeben zu haben.

Wo war bitte der Plot, jeder Typ war ein Arsch (und TOM ein ganz besonderes) wtf, was war falsch mit dem also der hatte bestimmt PTBS, aber das ist kein Grund seine Frau zu schlagen und so abnormal ekelhaft zu sein. Also Jeff war ganz in Ordnung, aber ein langweiliger Charakter und Will war irgendwie auch nur ein Mitläufer (wenigstens relativ normal). Und Kristin und Suzy waren am Ende ein Paar, wtf, Ich dachte die wäre erst mit Will und dann mit Jeff und am Ende dann also doch mit Kristin, obwohl Kristin was mit Will und Jeff hatte. Also eigentlich hatte jeder was mit jedem. Ah und suzy hatte noch eine Mann, der sie geschlagen hat. Also voll krank. Jetzt habe ich den „Thriller“ gelesen und habe keine Ahnung um was es eigentlich ging….

Bei Joy Fielding habe ich entweder Glück oder Pech. Und bei diesem Buch hatte ich leider Pech. Die Geschichte hat sich so ganz anders entwickelt als ich es mir vorstellen konnte und das war für mich leider nicht so positiv. Mit keiner der Personen im Buch konnte ich mich identifizieren, ich fand alle sehr unsympathisch. Die Geschichte entwickelt sich leider auch sehr zäh und war für mich deswegen sehr langatmig und unspannend. Das Ende kam für mich sehr überraschend aber auch etwas an den Haaren herangezogen und daher sehr unrealistisch. Schade, dass mich dieses Buch der Autorin nicht überzeugen konnte.

Naja...hatte mir eigentlich mehr versprochen. Der Titel, das coole Cover.... Leider war es nur okay. Schnell gelesen, war schon unterhaltsam; wäre jetzt kein Buch, was ich weiterempfehlen würde.

Average read, with a great last 2 chapters. The characters are all unlikeable and the plot lags until the end. I wasn’t sure who I was supposed to be rooting for and by the end I didn’t really care.

It began with an interesting,surprising star. Opening the book from the local library, a note popped out. It told readers not to read the book. I did anyways. Very unique take coming from a female writer. The story is mainly set around a bar, a gym, and apartment of two of the main characters. Most of the people in the book are very unique. In that at least two or three of the main ones ,primarily younger guys are very surface,very flawed. Ego driven. Two are almost made to be sympathetic characters. There are twists you don't see coming. Worth reading, just not everyone's cup of tea. But its an interesting read.

Jeff is an insecure dudebro,
Will is kinda sweet, though unfortunately his insecurity turned into "nice guy" tendencies.
The twist at the end felt unnecessary.

Best friends and former soldiers in war, Tom and Jeff, take Jeff's visiting "little brother" Will to the Wild Zone bar were Jeff's live in girlfriend, Kristin is the sexy bartender. The men make a bet as to who can score with a beautiful woman named Suzy. With the help of Kristin, Will is the reluctant winner. Jeff and Tom are in angry disbelief. Then the wild ride begins. All three can't get Suzy out of their heads. As Will seems to flourish with his new found relationship with Suzy, Tom and Jeff deteriorate. The characters deal with Jeff's bad but reasonably controlled behavior and then with Tom's extremely violent and frighteningly out of control behavior that worsens as the book continues. Plus, Suzy struggles with a horrific problem of her own and pulls in those that have entered the "Wild Zone".
The language through the book is very rough. Not for the prudish,for example, Tom hires an "escort" and she rattles off her menu of services as well as her do's and don'ts for the bedroom. Yikes! There are also a lot of repetitive phrases that drove me nuts. Examples, "Do you want to talk about it", "I don't understand", "what do you mean", "it's because of Afghanistan"
This is a tale that has been told before expect for the one amazing surprise at the very end of the book. Before you get to that amazing surprise - everyone gets what they deserve!

Although I do enjoy Joy Fieldings books, I find that her newest books are not of the same quality as her earlier books which are real thrillers. Given that, this book did hold my attention and keep me reading to find out what was going to happen. I had figured out the twist at the end so reading it just verified what I was thinking.
Three friends were sitting in a bar and began betting that they would or wouldn't do certain things. A nice looking lady entered the bar and sat down at a table and ordered a pomegranate martini. Soon they are betting $100 on which of them would be able to get invovled with her first. Jeff has charmed the ladies all his life and he is sure that this will be an easy bet for him to win. But perhaps Suzy the mystery lady is more than meets the eye and has a few surprises of her own for them.

Boah… ganz schwierig. Am Anfang fand ich das Buch total blöd, weil mich diese Art von Geschichte einfach nicht interessiert hat. Und je mehr ich die männlichen Charaktere in diesem Buch kennengelernt habe, desto schlimmer wurde es. Ich konnte das ehrlich fast nicht lesen, weil die meisten dieser Typen so misogynen Müll gelabert haben. Außerdem wären Triggerwarnungen angebracht gewesen und ja ich weiß, dass das Buch schon etwas älter ist, deswegen nehme ich das niemandem übel ;).
Das klingt jetzt natürlich alles sehr negativ und da fragt man sich natürlich, wie die 3⭐️ zustande gekommen sind. Es ist einfach so, dass mich das Ende so umgehauen hat. Das war für mich total überraschend und faszinierend.

Listened to this story on audio book while on the road and found it to be a steady, intriguing novel that had a pretty good, fast paced ending. The characters had little to no back story hence the three star rating. The characters were very one dimensional, instant love happened throughout the book and the damsel in distress theme was very evident (as well as every female in the book being weak, damaged, etc.). So overall, the story line consisted of three guys in a bar, betting on who can bed a girl in the corner. Turns out there's a twist to this girl that will have them all surprised.

Read all of Joy Fielding's book - this one is her latest. 3 men in a bar make a bet to see which one of them can be the first to seduce a mysterious looking woman. They dont realize that there harmless bet will take on a life of its own, and change all of their lives. Expected some of what happened in the book, was TOTALLY surprised by the ending!

I thought I had it all figured out, but I was wrong. The ending was a complete surprise, which I guess is a good thing. It did seem a little too contrived at times and the most villainous character seemed more of a caricature of a villain than an actual one. Might give another Joy Fielding a try, though. Good writing. Good twists.

Krass. Hätte nie im Leben mit diesem Plot-Twist gerechnet. Hab mir erst vorgenommen mich über die Autorin zu beschweren, weil ich die Paar-Konstellationen so komisch und unpassend fand. Aber es hatte alles einen Sinn und Plan. Die Queer-Romance am Ende hat mich auf jeden Fall abgeholt :D

This novel catches the attention from the start and builds on it all the way to the end. The characters seem real, like people you know. The ending is a surprise. Definitely worth reading.
