Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.

As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

It took me longer to finish this volume compared to the last one, which I breezed through quickly. I think I just haven't been in the right mood for this type of reading.

That said, the fact that I still enjoyed it so much speaks volumes about how great One Piece is! Even when I'm not in the perfect headspace, it still manages to captivate me.

Oda’s artwork is fantastic—simple yet highly effective, with just the right amount of detail and a sense of fun throughout.

This volume wraps up the Fish-Man arc and sets the stage for our crew's exciting new adventures in the Grand Line.

By finishing this volume, I have read the full East blue saga and I have started the Alabasta saga (currently at its second arc: the whiskey peak arc). One hundred and eight chapters in nine months or so is not that bad at all especially that I have been reading this manga mainly in my way to and from college. Anyway!
I honestly thought this cannot get any better but it turned out that it was only the beginning.
I can't wait to see what will happen next 😊.

A rewarding conclusion to Arlong Park as well as a nice transition story, it nicely sets up the next arc and introduces new characters and mechanics in a fun and engaging way.

A nice conclusion to the current arc, and a good set up into the new one as we finally enter the Grand Line. Although there's still some unfinished business with troublesome pirates. And a high value bounty. I'm definitely getting into the action scenes more, although they're still not my favourite but this next arc had really grabbed my attention. The grand line feels so otherworldly and the possibilities seem endless. Already we've been introduced to some knock off Austin Powers and a Moby Dick style sea monster in volume 12, which felt very left field but strangely not entirely surprising.

Looking forward to the next arc.

This set of volumes is a little less cohesive and less consistently amazing than the last set. But there is a lot that is very well done here.

Volume 10 and most of volume 11 is devoted to finishing up the conflict with the fishman pirate Arlong and freeing Nami’s village, so that she can therefore be free to travel with the Straw Hats. This series has insanely long fights, but this is still a gripping one for the way it mixes tension, humor, and themes.

For instance, Luffy is obviously the powerhouse of the team, but after some silly rubber boy antics he ends up stuck under water – kryptonite + a ticking time bomb for a devil-fruit user! – and Zoro and Sanji have to figure out how to get past some very powerful fishmen to save him. This is the first time we get to see the pair collaborate and exhibit care and concern for each other…and justifiably so, because they’re both pretty busted up by the end! Luffy also gets some assistance from the two villagers who care the most about Nami, and that connects to an important thematic element, namely...

Once Luffy is back to fighting Arlong, the fishman supremacist starts going on about the inherent genetic superiority of his species in terms of physical strength. Luffy starts shouting about how he can’t use a sword, or cook, or navigate, or tell lies – that he is fully aware that he needs other people to survive. Arlong completely misses the point (which is that you don’t NEED to do everything optimally, if you collaborate with the people who have those skills), as well as the irony in the fact that he’s trying to hold onto Nami specifically because she has a talent that he doesn’t share. He calls Luffy pathetic and says: “You lack the slightest shred of dignity or ability!...Just what can you do?”. The answer to which, of course, is: “I can beat YOU” .

The other theme is what it means to be nakama. The fight takes Luffy and Arlong to Nami’s room, where she’s spent the past 8 years, since she was a child, drawing maps.
Luffy: This pen has blood on it.
Arlong: Drawing charts for me allows Nami to do the thing she loves best!...Once we have charts of all the world’s oceans, nothing can stop the fishmen!...Think you can use that girl as well as I do?
L: (Quietly grips Arlong’s saw sword…and cracks it!) ‘Use’?

Because, of course, if Luffy saw his comrades as people to USE, rather than collaborate with freely, he would plan how to take those sea charts. But they represent something he can’t accept.

Given the chorus of “Usopp is annoying and weak and cowardly” from some fans, I have to say…
He IS, but we already saw with Captain Kuro and his gang, and we see it again here: Usopp WILL step up and get things done! He just has to do it in a different way from the “monster trio”. Don’t be like Arlong when it comes to talking about this character, is my point!

From the end of volume 11 through 12, a variety of stuff is going on that mostly serves to set things up for later:
-The World Government responding to Luffy taking down 3 dangerous pirates who were undoubtedly harming civilians…by putting an unprecedented bounty on his head.
- Luffy being hilariously happy about this, and those who are cheering him on being proud too because they KNOW that’s how he’d react!
- Roguetown (a name that makes MUCH more sense than the anime’s “Loguetown”), the place where the former king of the pirates was born and later executed, and parallels between Gol D. Roger and Luffy
- Captain Smoker, the first marine we’ve met who has devil-fruit powers
- A mysterious caped figure named Dragon who seems to have weather magic
- A giant whale named Laboon, who was friends with a pirate crew who never returned

This is a good point to say that, while Zoro’s backstory is simpler than for most of the Straw Hats, I really like that this man’s-man internal inspiration is a little girl named Kuina who used to beat the pants off of him at their old dojo. He was SO frustrated by this, but when she sounds like she’s buying into the societal idea that she can’t stay on top because she’s a girl, Zoro is NOT having it. He’s like: You think I want to win because of some stupid hormones? Screw that! We’re both going to train like crazy, and if I don’t get to be the best swordsman in the world it’ll be because that’s you, and vice versa. Deal?
But then Kuina dies in a random accident, and Zoro is just devastated. He asks the dojo master, her father, if he can have her sword - Wado Ichimonji, which he carries to this day – in order to “make my name reach heaven” so that she knows that he kept their promise. Even so, he’s just kind of lost for a decade (Literally, actually. He has ZERO sense of direction) until he finds Luffy, who gives him a use for that goal, and Sanji, who becomes his new friend-rival. I hadn’t noticed until just now, but the way Zoro interacts with Sanji is so much like how he treated Kuina, just like Sanji interacts with Zoro exactly the way he did with Zeff and the fighting chefs. It was Zoro’s interaction with Tashigi – a female marine who loves swords and looks disconcertingly like Kuina – that illustrated this. Like Kuina and Sanji, she’s got a layer of defensiveness, like she’s used to being under-estimated. To which Zoro always has this frustrated: “Just because I don’t want you to die doesn’t mean I think you’re weak, god damn it!” thing in response.
For all his stoicism, Zoro is clearly terrified of losing anyone else he cares about. He doesn’t SAY so, but the way he immediately starts working out after every near-defeat, often while still swathed in bandages – frequently muttering something about how that was too close, and he has to get stronger - really speaks to that.

Tashigi also is instrumental in Zoro getting two new swords with legendary potential to match Wado. When shit goes down in Whiskey Peak (as Zoro and Nami, the most street, er, SEA-smart members of the crew immediately realize it will)…damn, he looks just worryingly happy to have a chance to try them out on 100 antagonists at once! Vivi calls him “Mr. Bushido” for basically the rest of their interactions because she first encounters him during this “Who the heck is this terrifying lone samurai?!?” incident.

Another fun read, and the end of the "East Blue" story arc. There's enough of a good mix of character development, compelling villains, and world-building thus far to keep me sailing along with this series. (I know I have like 20+ omnibus volumes to go, but my enthusiasm is still rampant at this point.)

I loved that the whole crew got to showcase themselves at the end of the "Arlong Park" story, and show how powerful they are becoming as a whole.

And then there's the "lead-in" to the Baroque Works story arc, which is enough to whet my appetitie for the next volume.

Yet another really entertaining One Piece story by Eiichiro Oda.

The action in the first volume was fairly interesting because throwing Luffy into the lake actually changed up the action. And there were several clever ways that his team was able to survive. I am glad that the fighting really only lasted for the first volume, because it would have gotten too long otherwise.

Volume 11 really wraps up the East Blue saga (minus Chapter 100, which is the real end of East Blue in Volume 12), and not only has some great crew interactions, but it brings back some characters from the first few volumes that were a nice surprise. I thought it was very cleverly hinted at throughout the last few omnibus'.

Volume 12 takes our crew to the grand line, and has some really heartbreaking storytelling with Lubbon the whale. There was also some great artwork here. This volume also sets up the Baroque Works arc nicely.

What this volume lacked that the last one did is some real deep themes, but otherwise is just as fun as the other volumes. So I'll give this one a 7 out of 10.

This is for me One Piece entering the 4 star territory, but still not a strong 4 star. I feel like that in this omnibus we got some of the worst and some of the best content up until this point. I was getting really turned off by some of the fight scenes, mainly because of some of the defining traits of shonnen manga (them naming each and every attack they make). But we also got some character growth, the friendship side of things is starting to come along, the humorous side of One Piece is starting to grow on me, I realized that I have to adjust my standards because some of the things I was not vibing with are things that can be looked over sometimes. It still kinda bothers me when something clowny happens in the middle of a really serious moment, but I’ve been told that Oda can make really serious and emotional scenes so I’ll be looking forward to those.

Lastly, the new arc that began on volume 12 has started well, I’m enjoying getting to go to the grand line.

End of the East Blue saga!! Super easy to get through since I’ve watched the story twice (with some changes, but still).

Love the little beginning pictures of Koby and Helmeppo too, miss them.

I forgot how boring and kind of anticlimactic the beginning of the new saga is. I will keep going though, because I’m told it gets better. I really didn’t like the beginning of the whole Baroque Works thing in the anime though…

This first half is one of the best one piece arcs, and second half is probably one of the worst.

Saying that let's talk about why the first half is 5 out of 5. It's the second half of Arlong Park and we have all our major players fighting the big bad here. He's ruthless, strong, and a asshole. All the right things to get Luffy to smack this motherfucker down. On top of that you get so many great payoffs here, especially with Niami and her family and Luffy protecting his own. The 2nd half is them on adventures, first stop is Lounge town which isn't bad. It's pretty solid and get to see a new face, a mysterious one! The very last part of it is the worst arc when the crew gets swallowed by a whale.

Yeah. You read that right.

Saying that the last arc still has some funny moments but is far weaker. Bringing a near perfect volume down from 5 to 4.

In this volume of One Piece, Luffy has confronted Arlong about using Nami for years, resulting in a battle between The Strawhat Pirates and The Arlong Pirates in the end The Strawhat’s win. After this, the Navy sets a bounty on Luffy's head, a bounty of 30 million Berries. Soon after The Strawhats arrive in Rogue Town, the town where the age of pirates began. The crew splits off to do some shopping, Zoro heads off to buy swords, Sanji heads off to buy food, while Nami goes to buy clothes, Usopp goes to buy equipment, and Luffy goes to look at the execution scaffold where Pirate King Gold D. Roger died. On the execution scaffold, Luffy is attacked by Captain Buggy and Lady Alvida. Buggy and Alvida try to execute Luffy on the guillotine, but ultimately fail when lightning strikes the scaffold and Luffy escapes with Zoro and Sanji. As they head for the ship in order to escape, the Navy pursues them throughout the town. Captain Smoker stops Buggy and Alvida from catching Luffy, but then tries to stop Luffy himself. While being pursued, Zoro stops to fight Sergeant Tashgi who looks just like his childhood friend that died unexpectedly years ago. After Zoro wins their sword fight, they bicker for a little bit. Zoro joins the others and they keep running, While Smoker pursues The Strawhats, he is unexpectedly stopped by some strange sketchy guy. Smoker discovers the one who delayed him is none other than Dragon the revolutionary, saying that the government has a bounty on his head. The Strawhats make it off the island and continue onward to the Grand Line. They meet a whale named Laboon who has been waiting for this pirate crew to come back for him. Then we are introduced to two characters named Ms.Wednesday and Mr.9. They show up to try to kill Laboon, and after they are stopped, the Strawhats promise to come back to see Laboon in the future. As the Strawhats sail with Ms.Wednesday and Mr.9 on board, The Strawhats arrive on the island named Whisky Peak which appears to be an island of giant cactuses. The townspeople welcomed the Strawhat Pirates and everyone eats and drinks a ton. Shortly after this massive feast, all the Strawhats pass out. The towns folk talk about a plan to take all the things of value from their ship and to tie them all up immediately. Suddenly Zoro, who was acting knocked out, overhears the plan and takes them on. It turns out this town is part of a secret organization called Baroque works, and so Zoro challenges the whole town and wins! That is when the book ends.

I've finished the East Blue Saga, and I must say this manga is actually growing on me.
It was rather too silly when I first started it and I was even considering ditching it, but after a very persistent nagging from a friend, I've pushed on and struck gold. The plot is now becoming very captivating and immersive. And it's starting to show that it's being meticulously constructed to become something grand.
The characters are finally being developed, and I JUST LOVE LUFFY ANF HIS CREW. Some characters are still too obscure and one-dimensional, but I'm sure everything will be fixed in due time. The villains are becoming more solid, interesting and real challenges too, unlike in the first chapters.
The world is being properly crafted, and growing. I read someone say that this (East Blue Saga- the 100 chapters) is like a prologue for the series, and the world until now is like the shire in Middle Earth. The more the merrier. I'm all for it.
plus...The Arlong Park arc was just fire!

I know this is going to be even better...and there's a lot to look forward to!! And I'm so excited!!!!!!!

This gets four stars purely on the strength of volumes 10 and 11. Although I think the first half of the Arlong Park arc is more satisfying on a story level than the second half, it’s the second half that really kinda hits all of the best “shonen” beats.

I’d even go so far as to say this is the best that One Piece has looked to this point. The way Oda frames some of the action is spectacular and I also think his artwork has just improved a lot since the beginning of the manga. The fight between the fish men and Luffy’s crew after Luffy gets thrown into the ocean is proof of this.

The Rogue Town mini arc is a nice sort of comedown after two back to back long and kinda heavy arcs and it was nice to see the return of Alvida and Buggy. I also like that it set little nuggets up to follow in the future. Good thinking ahead Oda.

The beginning of the Baroque Works saga is not really bad per se, but it’s kind of hard to go from the second half of the East Blue saga and power all the way back down to starting a whole new campaign. I like the way this omnibus ends, with an extended action sequence involving Zolo, but the rest of the lead in kinda feels lesser than.

That all said, I’m fully on board with One Piece. Unless something drastically changes in the coming sagas and arcs, I’d consider myself a fan of the manga. Can’t wait to get to more Baroque Works.

Always saved the best for last, right?

I have never felt this satisfied finishing the East Blue saga in such an exciting giggling matter.
This Omnibus Volume has everything you could ever want in a conclusion of the first twelve volumes of One Piece.

In fact, I wouldn't mind rereading this manga again because it's really THAT GREAT!

Volume 4 was another great omnibus! We got even more time getting to know and love our characters and also more forward motion from the plot. It's not that I don't think the battles are fun, I do, I just like this style of chillin' with the characters more that we got for the majority of this omnibus. This omni also concludes East Blue, now on to Baroque Works!

It's the first one piece volume I've given 3 stars to. It was a bit slow and at times felt like filler - it really managed to grab my interest with the last chapter 108 entering Baroque Works saga.
Hoping vol 12-24 is better.

A solid way to end the first general story arc and launch into the next one. I'm not surprised this series has been going for so long because there's clearly a lot of potential for just fucking around in this world. There's creative a sense of fun that comes with all the unique pirates and side characters. When they get deep into the lore of the world it gets a little bit messy, but it never goes for too long and Luffy's breezy, go-with-the-flow attitude helps keep things moving.

These are the last volumes I own so I don't know when I'll pick this series up again. I certainly enjoyed these chapters enough to keep the thought of me reading more of it a possibility.

At this point I'm probably beating a dead horse when I say the fight scenes can start to drag for me personally, but overall I enjoyed just how emotional Arlong Park ended up being. We got introduced to some new characters that are definitely intriguing, and I am pleasantly surprised at how quickly we are entering the Grand Line.

Vol 10

Luffy is fighting the Fishman. Luffy has eaten the Devil Fruit, which makes him flexible like rubber. He was winning at first.

Then he is in trouble.

His teammates all step up and try to fight the bad guy while Luffy is trying to get to safety.

The series is very popular. I read the volume to understand the style. It is about friendship, and there is a clear who the good guys—just a lot of fighting.

I like the sea cow MooMoo.
