Ancient feuds. Demonic forces bent on destruction. Oh, and apparently vampires are real. Della didn’t sign up for any of this.
She didn’t sign up for violence and mayhem in the streets of the Big Easy. She didn’t sign up to be a magnet for an evil force intent on hunting down the reincarnated souls of its enemies.
She sure as hell didn’t sign up for rescue by a sinfully tempting vampire lord and his fashion-model-gorgeous friends. Especially since he seems convinced that she’s the living embodiment of his long lost human mate.
Seriously, this kind of stuff isn’t supposed to happen to insurance company receptionists from New Jersey.
The world is descending into chaos. Now, a coven of hypnotically alluring bloodsuckers is trying to convince her they’re the good guys. And the truly scary part is, she’s starting to believe them.
The Circle of Blood Series: In another lifetime, six vampires lost their mates—and their mortality—to an unimaginable evil power. Now, if they can’t reunite with the reincarnated souls of their lost loves soon, it may just mean the end of the world.
USA Today bestselling author R. A. Steffan lives in New Mexico, where the sunsets paint the mountains purple, and roadrunners roam the desert endlessly in search of their coyote victims. When she’s not busy writing stories about people loving each other in all sorts of different and interesting ways, she can be found taking care of her small menagerie of critters.
A rebel to the core, she is currently sticking it to the man by illegally harvesting graywater from the kitchen and bathroom sinks to water trees outside. This fearless disregard for societal norms extends to her writing, as well. There, you will find polyamory along with straight, gay, bisexual, and non-gender conforming love of all flavors. You will also find families of choice, profound friendships, adventure, danger, and good triumphing over evil.
That, and sex. Lots of sex. Most of which is not the vanilla variety.
Some books are fantastic. Some books are just OK and then you have some that are just bad. This book was bad! I have been looking for a new vampire romance series to get into. I was so excited when I found this one. Boy, was I disappointed!
I didn’t think the heroine was really a solid character. Most of the time the book talked about her former life. I just felt that her former life had more description then her current personality. It also talked about how much the hero loved her former life and just automatically loved her because of that. That really doesn’t do it for me.
I think this is why I do not like books that involve reincarnation. I understand the concept of having one soul with multiple lifetimes.. but it just contradicts my believe that people change over time and certainly through different time periods. So we’re not the same people. And I want somebody to love me for me not the 112 other “me” floating throughout time. Because I would disassociate myself from them as different people. Connected people but still individual people.
But also I just didn’t the story to be engaging. And I also don’t think the author did a good job connecting the storyline from one segment to another. I just didn’t find storyline to be logical or reasonable. The heroine would have internal dialogue with herself that contradicted with her actions. And not only could I not connect with the main characters, the secondary characters were also just blah. The author tried so hard to make Xander the funny quirky but lovable sidekick...fail.
I’m just one of those people that have to finish a book if I bought it. And I lost interest probably after 1/3 of the book. And just forced myself to get through all the chapters. What a waste of time, i know! No way am I going to read the second book in the series.. Walking away right now. Looking for new romantic vampire series to invest in. And I recommend that you walk away too, if you value your time and money.
A bit of a slow start but once the book got going I enjoyed it, still need time to get to know the other 5 vampires at this point Snag seems the most interesting, but all characters seem to have qualities that have led to some questions I would like answered.....
I wasn't overly keen on the Reincarnation aspect I felt Irena's presence overpowered Della a lot, I am putting a lot of this down to first book syndrome but felt Tre never really knew either Della or Irena that well to have professed undying love and to have been in the state he was in, there wasn't really enough to build on aspects for me.... Still I really want to read book 2 as my interest is piqued, especially that epilogue....
For a first book it was ok I wouldn't say it pulled me in that I couldn't put it down, was a good start though
more of a 3.5. I enjoyed the concept of the soul thing and mates. As usual, not so sure I liked the very ending, but I am curious enough that I will continue
Love-sick Tre, and once that started the book went to hell. And Della was an idiot to keep saying she can take care of herself. If authors think that make the heroine strong then they need to read more reviews. She was almost killed twice in as many days and she says she can take care of herself. How stupid can one woman be? I’m glad she got over that attitude real quick. And at about 50% pages and pages of sex, after Della knew Tre for exactly ONE day. Ugh! I don’t mind sex in books but there doesn’t have to be pages and pages and pages and pages of it.
AND, this really didn’t have to be 319 pages. There was too much filler, and the vamps weren’t all that. I mean they could turn into wisps of vapor and into owls but there was no mention of their strength or speed. Maybe I’ll move on to the next book because it only has 211 pages, not really enough to get boring. They do need 13 vamps to defeat Bael the demon but there are only 7 of them in the world so they’ll have “turn” the others, like they did Della, among the next 6 books, I guess.
I don’t know, this could have been much better if the vamps had only been “more”. I did like all the characters: Xander, Eris, Duchess, Oksana and Snag, but there was just something missing. Maybe it was all the page-skipping I had to do, I don’t know.
I’ve already mentioned the sex so I’ll just add that the F-bomb was used 13 times.
As to the narration: One reviewer said, “Gwendolyn Druyor kept the emotion in her voice throughout the entirety of her narration. It became a bit too much,” so I’m assuming the reviewer wanted the reader to sound boring or robotic occasionally. Ummm, no! Gwendolyn Druyor did a good job on the emotions but except for Tre’s voice every other male else sounded kind of girly. Especially Eris. I thought Eris was a girl at first, until he was referred to as “he.” Practice on the men’s voices definitely needs to be done.
It has been a while since I have delve into the paranormal and this series caught my eye. I admit that at first I was a bit disappointed but as the story starts to play out and we meet the characters I started to really like it. So on to the next, see how this one goes.
The writing begins with a snail like pace that's so distant it's hard to feel close to the characters at all. Honestly I never felt like I knew them enough to actually care about their struggles even when the story finished. Despite the slow opening when the action starts events start moving too fast. The pacing on this really never evens out. The characters have a bunch of ridiculous Insta love, the sex scenes aren't organic to the story at all and just seem random abrupt and unlikely. Overall not the book for me.
Like New Orleans, this book was a hot mess. OK, not really. It just felt like it. There was so much info dump that at least half the book was spent on the inner musings of the characters, not on what was actually happening. Because of this, I started skipping to the dialogue 'cause ain't nobody got time to be reading about the mental issues of a 26-year-old fictional character. Needless to say, it dragged on and on.
I really liked the whole lost-love-reincarnated bit of the story, but I felt like it could have been handled better. Tre was hard for me to connect with, and I honestly didn't see his appeal. This book had such great potential, but it was just poorly executed. It's almost like the author was trying to do too much with it. If you're looking for a somewhat fun but obscure read, I'd say give this one a chance and see what you think.
Re read 17/10/19 and loved it so much better the second time. Upped my rating to 4 stars.
--------------------------------------
I would have rated this book much higher than 3 stars right up until the halfway point. Then one seemingly out of place sex scene and a lot of confusion over dark/light angels and the big bang theory i lost my way a little. Della's sacrifice seemed rushed and the ending slightly flat. Also the whole vampires turning into owls i was not keen on. I will read the next but am slightly wary now.
As a fan of RA Steffan and her go-to narrator Gwendolyn Druyor, I am once again starting a new series, this one a contemporary vampire tale cowritten with Jaelynn Woolf.
The story is set in New Orleans with enough local detail to make your hair frizz from the humidity every time you listen. A coven of six vampires has come to town in an attempt to defeat the demon Baal, and the city is mad with horrible violence erupting at random all over. After a mass shooting, vampire leader Tre meets human Della, who just might be the reincarnation of his lost love Irina and is the key to defeating Baal.
The love story between Tre and Della happens quickly, but it isn’t insta-love. Even with the possibility that she might be reincarnated, Della has some healthy skepticism at first.
For vampire fans, this is both familiar and slightly different. Their abilities include healing, flight as mist, flight as owls, and some mind-reading with other vampires. If you’re already a fan, nothing in the world building will make you stumble.
The writing itself is lovely. There were a few good descriptions and turns of phrase that caught my ear. I was particularly impressed with the writing of the fight scenes and general violence and mayhem. I could feel the reality of the crazy fervor around the characters.
The only time I thought the story lagged was after the first sex scene where Tre is giving Della the backstory on what happened to him. We as readers and listeners already know most of what he’s telling Della. She does need to know what he’s saying, and it should be a scene we witness. I’m not sure what could have been done to make that better. If I’d been reading vs listening, I would have skimmed those scenes.
We got enough of the other vampires to make me curious for the other stories when we get to them. It should be a fun ride no matter how it happens.
As to Druyor’s performance, she is consistent as always. I have listened to enough hours of her performing Steffan’s works that I recognize voices she’s used for other characters in different series. This is a great voice for fiction, and I’d put her in my top ten favorite narrators.
LOVED IT, a breath of fresh air in the paranormal book scene.
I've been sampling a lot of paranormal books lately and have been disappointed in those I have read. When I saw, Circle of Blood Book One: Lovers Rebirth the first thought that came to me was "I LOVED the cover", it is unique and pretty. The guy on the front was really good looking but he also was drawing me into the book, almost beckoning me to read it. I got the sample and was thrilled that I found a new series about Vamps and demons, it was a breath of fresh air after reading duds. Tre' was a very likeable character and Della was strong and likeable as well. I loved the slight new take on Vamps and how they came to be. The evil they are up against is creepy and makes the book very thrilling with violent action. I was pleased that this is an Adult book, definitely over 18. It was very hot n steamy in such a great way. I enjoyed all the vamps and their personality's, I hope i get to read more about them and see how the prophecy plays out. I really hope this is a longer series because it is so good!!!!! I seriously really loved reading this but wish it was a little longer, it is definitely a 5 star book. The storyline is original and keeps your attention , no skimming. Thank you for the wonderful time
I like Vampire stories but usually gay ones and this is my first straight series I have listen to and to be honest I am enjoying it very much except for the mushy sex scenes so I fast foward. The author knows how to write a story that brings the characters alive and at the same time you seem to know them and want to know more and with help of the narrator it accomplished. Each books is bases on the history of the character male or female how they became a vampire but it a story that tells a total different story of them than we usually hear. Tray is the leader and when he was turned he killed his life partner who offer herself to save him and in doing so he keeps a part of humanity but part of him is missing due to his soul torn into and the light part of the soul sent into hell. Then you meet Della a woman a bit down oh her luck in a dead end job and at the sametime she watching New Orleans going insane with mass shooting, murders and robberies. Unknown to her it is due to her being in New Orleans and meeting Tray who keeps coming and saving her and finding that she is his fated mated who is the spirt of his love that he killed when a demon named Baal turned him. Now he must try to get Della to understand why this happening and keep her safe and in the end Della sames him again by giving her life to save him but instead of dieing she is turned into a vampire.
4.5 Stars - due to a slight editing issue, and a typical outcome to one of the storylines.
We are introduced to a group of six vampires; Tre, Xander, Eris, Duchess, Oksana and Snag, and a human that goes by Della. As you would imagine, their worlds collide, which becomes one of the storylines for this first book in a six book series.
The book is in the POV of either Tre or Della. Tre has been around a while, and we learn about his lost love Irina, and how he became a vampire. Della is a receptionist, who lives alone and is not sleeping well. We are given her backstory, and she recounts her dreams, which wakes her in the night. Between these two, we also learn about Bael, the demon wreaking havoc in New Orleans. It is because of this demon that the lives of Tre and Della intersect, which leads to the plotline of the series.
I like vampire books, and always enjoy a different interpretation from one author to another. I really liked these vampires, and what they are capable of. The characters are believable, and I am particularly looking forward to Snag's story. I found this world interesting, well written and immersive.
Overall, if you like vampire books this one I recommend. Easy to read and follow, likeable characters, and ample back stories for the two main characters. I will be continuing the series.
3,5 stars. Very interesting idea, looking forward to the next books
I'm a sucker (pun intended) for a well-written vampire character and this book contains several of them. I really like the idea of the Circle of Blood, of vampires from different backgrounds and eras becoming a kind of "found family" while trying to combat the Big Bad. I understand that each of the series 6 books is focused on a different vampire and can't wait to read the stories of Eris and Xander. I also loved the world of New Orleans and the mambo priestess (for more of her I recommend you read the excellent prequel to the series, A Lover's Howl). Over all, I'm intrigued! The reason I'm not giving more stars to this very very solid first volume, is that there are a few things about the heroine, Della, that didn't sit well with me. I have a bit of a pet peeve with female characters who don't like themselves/think they're fat and ugly/can't believe how such a dashing man would ever fall for them/they are ashamed to show how much they want to have sex because they think this makes them "whores" etc. You get my point. But thankfully the character had a nice evolution in the end — and the male protagonist, Tre, was very well written so overall it worked. Okay, on to the next one now!
Stories of the Supernatural have always intrigued me, especially Vampires and shapeshifter's, but with vampires there can always be so many variables especially the characters, you are never bored. Again Ms Woolf and R.A. Steffan have given us a magnificent scenario to get completely involved in, Della and Trè are a couple who fit into this storyline perfectly, they find themselves drawn to each other with inexplicable effects guiding their action's. Without giving away to many of the dark secrets of this brilliant book, be assured you're going to be part of the never ending battle of white over black, hoping those you have found a connection with make it through. Battling an evil that few ever knew existed, the six main characters appear to be on the cusp of helping bring about the next prophecy within their world, naturally without realising it. You are going to find these characters unique and full of life, their deep family connections, are a major priority in whatever choices they make, so whatever and whoever is causing them pain, and heartache will find these vampires will not go down without a fight, plus destiny tends to intervene helping whenever possible. So jump into this world of fascinating vampires, humans, witches and of course demon's, and follow where these two wonderful Author's take you, I know you will love where you're going to be taken. Grab your copy today.
Della was attacked and a group of six vampire came to her rescue. Tre was one of the vampire and when he touched her he knew that she was the reincarnation of his first love. The person that he had killed the night he escaped Bsel, an evil demon like being, and became a vampire instead of an undead puppet. Bael is after Della in order to get revenge on her for loving Tre enough to give her life freely for him. There is a prophecy that when thirteen vampire beings come together then Bael will be defeated. Now the group must figure out how to save Della, where to find the other seven vampire, and survive an attack by a large group of undead. I read a couple reviewers that didn't like this book. I enjoyed reading it. There is a different take on vampire and their origins in this book which I liked. The only thing that got on my nerves was Della's actions at times. She would ignore what she was told to do to stay safe, do she was attached several times before she wisened up.
This book started out with a lot of promise but it went downhill pretty fast. In general, it's written as if the author doesn't quite know the world she has created and some plot complications were wrapped up with a super quick and convenient solution. To me, that pointed to lazy writing. The story became boring after the first five chapters or so. The heroine also has a lot of repeated self reflections, so much so that I skipped whole paragraphs and even a page because I already read it all. Why does she keep having the same self reflection over and over? I'm not usually a fan of short books (under 250p) but I think this particular book would have been much better if a lot of unnecessary fluff (ex: those self reflections) were cut out. I couldn't even finish the book, as I had to force myself to keep reading past the 40% mark. Maybe I'll go back and finish it, maybe not. This book is definitely not a favorite though.
Della moved to New Orleansfeeling drawn to the city. Once there her life was anything but extraordinary. She led a dull life with only her goldfish as a companion. Then a random act of mass violence led her to cross paths with some avenging vampires. From that moment on her life was not her own. Not that it ever was.
I love vampire books. I like their ageless beauty and power. I like that they are nearly indestructible. These descriptors do not fit these vampires. Strike #1. Della is dull even with her previous life. Strike #2. The story has a good concept but it drags. Strike #3. I never connected to the characters and never felt a connection between the characters themselves. I doubt Tre' would have ever glanced twice at Della had she not been his reincarnated soulmate. This just didn't work for me and I will not be continuing the series.
I do not like spoilers so I will try not to give them. I have been looking for a new vampire romance series to get into. I was so excited when I found this one. After reading it, I must say it is not quite what I was expecting, but still a good read anyways you just have to suspend disbelief a bit more than the usual adult PNR. I would consider this more Young Adult. This was an interesting twist of a vampire story. Tre' and Della's story of lost love found and struggling to face the challenges that arise during the battle of good vs evil. The coven of six vampires who all have their own pasts have decided to fight the evil that created them. I look forward to reading the next installment
>Book Review – Lover’s Rebirth >I am an independent reviewer. This book is the 1st novel in the Circle of Blood series and ends with an HEA. Della is a human who is lonely. She is living in New Orleans during a time when the city is having a ton of violence. Tre is a vampire who, along with 5 other vampires, is fighting evil. Tre saves Della from an attack and discovers she is the reincarnation of his first love. >The book has a lot of action, a prophesy and plenty of hot romance. The descriptions of the battles are vivid, as are the descriptions of what it feels like to be a vampire. The threat from evil seemed to disappear rather quickly, but the comradery amongst the vampires was fun to watch. > This book is appropriate for an adult audience. I am giving this story 4 stars.
Circle of Blood: Lover's Rebirth is fast paced paranormal romance with a dark-- and I mean VERY dark storyline. If you aren't fan of dark romance please skip this series because the love story here is not pink and sparkly, it's painful and full of thorns. And it's painful not because the male protagonist is sadistic or anything (he's super protective and quite a charmer when he wants to be) but because the villain makes their lives a living hell. You can expect psychologycal torture, blood and gore in almost every action scene; while at the same time long lost lovers are finally reunited after centuries of separation. This is a tale of vampires battling their dark nature and their demon creator in an effort to save mankind from the clutches of hell.
I enjoyed this a lot. I'm a little apprehensive to read the next book because it appears to me like this series is one of those where there are "X" amount of characters and each subsequent book is devoted to a different scenario of how that character meets their fated love. I find many times the plots to be so similar that about the only thing different are the names.
In this storyline there needs to be thirteen vampires to fulfill the prophecy to defeat Bael. Now there are seven. Even if the final five locate and turn their chosen ones, there will only be twelve vampires.
SPECULATIVE SPOILER BELOW:
It seems that Bastian is turned into a vampire by Bael so perhaps he will be converted to the good guys for lucky number 13.
It was ok. I read it for free through my kindle unlimited subscription (so not really free but I didn't have to pay individually for it). There wasn't a lot of explanation behind the why or the how. I read other reviews after I finished the book and definitely agree with most of them. The story isn't very well developed and one weird sex scene in the middle leads to the downfall of the story line. I'm trying to figure out how the epilogue comes into play and the how the next book will as well. I will most likely not be finishing this series which is saying a lot because once I read the first I read them all.
I know when I'm just not getting it when I skip through, using the first sentence of each paragraph. There were some parts that I did slow down and read straight through. The characters need to be more in the here and now, and a little bit fuller. The plot line is well done, especially when Della sees all the different times she and Tre past each other without knowing it. But again, fill out all the characters a little more. Add a little more info regarding Snag (best at the end of book 1, just to excite the reader). I gave 3 stars because overall I think this could be a great book, just needs a little revamp. (Pun intended).
It was ok with enough of a storyline to keep you gripped with ok characters and dialogue. The problem I had was the lack of chemistry between the two leads, the electric current as it was needed more depth. I wanted della to explore her dreams more and lead up to the romance, perhaps from her dreams knowing tre and understanding the language from her dreams. They jumped into bed far too quickly. It started off really well and the flashback to where tre became a vampire was a nice element. The changing into an owl is where it's story went wrong, just silly.I It needed more character development and dellas ability exploring.
I really tried to get into this book. But it was just to boring for me. The main character was so blah. I hate books that tells you instead of shows you. I didn't feel a connection to either character. My biggest issue is the female gets into 3 different scenarios 2 serious ones and she tries to tell the people who saved her life twice she wants to go home even though she knows shes in danger. There is a difference between being strong/independent and being stupid/stubborn and shes the latter.
I prefer the women to not be damsels in distress so was predisposed to not like this that much. Just feels like a story I’ve read a few times over but not done as well as others. Like a knock off the higher quality product. Still okay. I’m probably over thinking it. How do they make their money? How do they not get implicated in killing dozens when their car would have been found at the scene of the crime? It detracted from tension to keep going on about how Trey is about to die but they have time to not only change location but have a prolonged conversation.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
At 49% through the book this is a DNF for me. I'm so bored with it. I was intrigued by the concept of the book but I felt absolutley no connection with the characters. The book itself has no real depth at all and is really just rushing to get into the romance portion.
If the author would slow down and deepen the plot as well as the interactions between the characters I think the idea of the book would have been fantastic.
I'm so disappointed because I actually really do like the idea of soul mates and reincarnation IF it is written the right way.
