Brilliant and insightful sci-fi, as always, and an entertaining industrial espionage subplot. Yet, I could not finish the book and just cannot give it a higher rating. I simply detest how all women are portrayed. It doesn't matter if they are young, old, scientists, students, mothers, you name it; all they think and talk about is love, marriage and babies. Whatever they do, it is because of a man whom they are hoping to marry. The male characters invariably see them as naive, gentle, silly, in need to be sheltered, and largely incapable of thinking. If there was a Bechdel test for books, this one would fail dramatically. Sadly, this is a problem I keep encountering in Dilov's writing. It might be a product of his time, or it might be the need to target the book at YA male readers (but why???), but the fact is it interfered significantly with my ability to enjoy the book for the engaging sci-fi that it is.
