Rumiko Takahashi (高橋留美子) was born in Niigata, Japan. She is not only one of the richest women in Japan but also one of the top paid manga artists. She is also the most successful female comic artist in history. She has been writing manga non-stop for 31 years.

Rumiko Takahashi is one of the wealthiest women in Japan. The manga she creates (and its anime adaptations) are very popular in the United States and Europe where they have been released as both manga and anime in English translation. Her works are relatively famous worldwide, and many of her series were some of the forerunners of early English language manga to be released in the nineties. Takahashi is also the best selling female comics artist in history; well over 100 million copies of her various works have been sold.

Though she was said to occasionally doodle in the margins of her papers while attending Niigata Chūō High School, Takahashi's interest in manga did not come until later. During her college years, she enrolled in Gekiga Sonjuku, a manga school founded by Kazuo Koike, mangaka of Crying Freeman and Lone Wolf and Cub. Under his guidance Rumiko Takahashi began to publish her first doujinshi creations in 1975, such as Bye-Bye Road and Star of Futile Dust. Kozue Koike often urged his students to create well-thought out, interesting characters, and this influence would greatly impact Rumiko Takahashi's works throughout her career.

Career and major works:

Takahashi's professional career began in 1978. Her first published story was Those Selfish Aliens, a comedic science fiction story. During the same year, she published Time Warp Trouble, Shake Your Buddha, and the Golden Gods of Poverty in Shōnen Sunday, which would remain the home to most of her major works for the next twenty years. Later that year, Rumiko attempted her first full-length series, Urusei Yatsura. Though it had a rocky start due to publishing difficulties, Urusei Yatsura would become one of the most beloved anime and manga comedies in Japan.

In 1980, Rumiko Takahashi found her niche and began to publish with regularity. At this time she started her second major series, Maison Ikkoku, in Big Comic Spirits. Written for an older audience, Maison Ikkoku is often considered to be one of the all-time best romance manga. Takahashi managed to work on Maison Ikkoku on and off simultaneously with Urusei Yatsura. She concluded both series in 1987, with Urusei Yatsura ending at 34 volumes, and Maison Ikkoku being 15.

During the 1980s, Takahashi became a prolific writer of short story manga, which is surprising considering the massive lengths of most of her works. Her stories The Laughing Target, Maris the Chojo, and Fire Tripper all were adapted into original video animations (OVAs). In 1984, after the end of Urusei Yatsura and Maison Ikkoku, Takahashi took a different approach to storytelling and began the dark, macabre Mermaid Saga. This series of short segments was published sporadically until 1994, with the final story being Mermaid's Mask. Many fans contend that this work remains unfinished by Takahashi, since the final story does not end on a conclusive note.

Another short work left untouched is One-Pound Gospel, which, like Mermaid Saga, was published erratically. The last story to be drawn was published in 2001, however just recently she wrote one final chapter concluding the series

Later in 1987, Takahashi began her third major series, Ranma ½. Following the late 80s and early 90s trend of shōnen martial arts manga, Ranma ½ features a gender-bending twist. The series continued for nearly a decade until 1996, when it ended at 38 volumes. Ranma ½ is one of Rumiko Takahashi's most popular series with the Western world.

During the later half of the 1990s, Rumiko Takahashi continued with short stories and her installments of Mermaid Saga and One-Pound Gospel until beginning her fourth major work, InuYasha. While Ran

I'm loving my leisurely journey through this series. The art is simply gorgeous. Crisp, clear, and easy to ready. It's my favorite kind of manga. And the story? Well, Inuyasha was the show that made me absolutely fall in love with anime. I've watched all 180ish episodes three times and I'm already excited for the next watch. Kagome is fierce and kind, Inuyasha is irritable, yet cares a great deal, and Sesshomaru...well, he couldn't be a better antihero.

A summary of events....(there may by minor spoilers....you have been warned.)

Naraku is really starting to make his presence known. He offers Sesshomaru a new arm, just knowing that Sesshomaru will go straight for his obsession - Inuyasha's sword, and probably kill Inuyasha in the process. A fierce battle ensues.

Inuyasha really does care about Kagome and insists she go home. Then Miroku and Kaede absolutely insist that Inuyasha rest and heal. (Brothers!) We also learn about the gross Onigumo. (Ew!) Naraku has other tricks up his sleeve. Poor Royakan. Luckily, the Shikon Jewel is calling to Kagome.

Souls are being stolen and the crew meets a familiar, and mostly unwelcome face - Kikyo! Kikyo traps Kagome and forces her to watch as she lures Inuyasha in.

There are some super cute moments between Kagome and Inuyasha in this volume, including a darling little conversation that wasn't in the show, so I enjoyed it very much.

This volume contains one the of the ickiest episodes, in my mind. (I still love it, just a super gross villain.) Watch out for that mini garden! As gross as the villain is, there are some incredibly sweet moments between Kagome and Inuyasha. And Miroku and Shippo make me laugh.

Finally, we have the tragic introduction of the fourth crew member...introducing Sango!

As I'm sure I've mentioned in my reviews for the first and/or second volume of these omnibus editions, when I first read Inuyasha years ago, the situation with Kikyo was the most interesting part of the story for me. Naraku's role isn't anywhere near as compelling without any hint thus far about what might be motivating him. He's just "the bad guy" at the moment, so I'm hoping we get more details about just why he hated Kikyo, and by extension Inuyasha, as the story goes along.

I like seeing different takes on "strength" in manga, and it's especially refreshing to see in shonen manga. Kagome, and past Kikyo, have strength of character that is reflected in their ability to purify the shikon jewel, an artifact that in any other hands becomes an instrument of corrupt, destructive power. Inuyasha's ability to beat the crap out of dudes, by contrast, is shonen business as usual, fulfilling the demands of the series' magazine and reading demographic.

Volume 9 introduces Sango, who, like all the secondary characters, has an interesting origin story. But, as I recall, it isn't long at all before, like Miroku and Shippo, she becomes a mostly mute and inactive witness to Inuyasha and Kagome's adventures, or joins in on the banter and bickering during the quieter moments between superhero battles.

Originally publised as three volumes (7, 8, and 9), this is a brick. It's very heavy, and the binding wasn't up to the task. If you want to avoid carpal tunnel, and want your book to stay together through multiple reads, try to track down the individual volumes instead.

That's really just a format issue. The story inside, and the art, are good as ever. I really liked how Takahashi dealt with InuYasha's confused feelings towards Kikyo and Kagome. Realistic, too, that his love for Kikyo isn't just going to go away, even as he develops feelings for Kagome. The conversation he has with Kagome about it is very well-written, very honest.

OKAY I love this volume?? Like we get introduced to Onigumo/Naraku lore here, and then what really happened with Kikyo, Inuyasha, and Naraku. And you know what, I gotta hand it to Naraku, what he did was truly evil and manipulative like damn 😭

Also Kikyo??? Yeah I'm still mad about her pinning Kagome to that tree and making her watch her interaction with Inuyasha loooorrddd 💀 if she didn't want Kagome to interfere, she could have killed her or knocked her out. But no she wanted her to watch??? Girl be for real 😭😂

Anyway. Human Inuyasha makes another appearance in this as well! I love him with all my heart, I'm afraid 🥲😂 Inuyasha's humanity and soul is also discussed, and I don't know, but I just love it. Inuyasha's humanity is a part of him, and contrary to what he may think, it makes him strong than any other full demon out there.

We also get introduced to Sango and Kokahu here! 😭 I always thought their story is one of the saddest in the anime and it just makes my heart hurt. It's no different here in the manga 🥲

Excited to continue to Volume 4!

Exact rating: 4.5

This is probably my favorite volume so far considering what was packed in here. Aside from one monster of the week arc (Peach Man), everything in this is directly related to the main plot and characters. Almost all of it focused on sharing new ideas to expand our understanding of the Shikon Jewel, what happened fifty years ago, and the relationships between everyone. The last couple chapters make me wanna yell, and that just shows I’m invested, and this series is doing something right. There’s an engaging mix of emotional and violent scenes so that it doesn’t neglect the romance or the action. I feel like I understand everyone very well, and I can sympathize even with the antagonists. Plus, the art is consistent and nice to look at.

Inuyasha doesn’t have any closure with Kikyo, and she’s still technically around, so it makes sense he would worry about her. He underestimates how much of a threat she actually is, but at this point, I get why. I think Kikyo is an interesting character, especially now that she’s been partially brought back to life, and it’s cool to see her figure out what to do with all her complicated feelings. The side characters didn’t get too much to do, but they have good banter in the calm moments in between. The modern day segments with Kagome’s classmates are pretty cute. I still love Kagome and her natural instinct to stand up for what’s right. I like that her being an angry crier is so consistent that it’s actually surprising to Inuyasha if she cries from sadness.

Anyway, potentially deadly drinking game: take a shot every time Inuyasha and Kagome say each other’s names. They’re kind of obsessed with each other.

ABSOLUTELY LOVED this!!!!

Inuyasha and Kagome continue their quest to find the Shikon Jewel shards, as well as meeting new friends...It continues the action, comedy and touching moments the other volumes had! I read this as the first book for Becca’s Bookopolothon- fantasy. I’d say there’s more emotion/longing between the two main characters, Inuyasha and Kagome in the manga than in the anime. Sesshomaru is still present and I love his character so...❤️! Jaken is 😂😂😂 too!

I love the art from this series too!

Ingenious as ever.

Sesshomaru — 6 chapters

1. Naraku appears to Sesshomaru and offers him a Shikon shard enchanted arm and a wasp’s nest and tells him to attack their mutual enemy, Inuyasha. Inuyasha and crew are chilling quietly when Sesshomaru shows up with a giant demon.

2. With the human arm, Sesshomaru is able to steal the tetsusaiga sword. Miroku attacks with his vortex.

3. With the wasps, Sesshomaru counters the monk’s vortex. Kagome neutralizes the tetsusaiga with her bow.

4. Sesshomaru thwarts her attacks with superior speed and continues to attack Inuyasha. Sesshomaru ends up injuring Kagome, drawing Inuyasha’s wrath.

5. Sesshomaru defeated. Inuyasha is able to rip off his arm and he retreats. Inuyasha then collapses from his injuries.

6. Denouement & Kagome banished

Overall, its a man in a hole plot, with a long descent and a sharp rise. Chapters 2, 3, & 4 follow the same form. Sesshomaru delivers punishment until at the end there is a reversal or reason to hope at chapter’s end. The opening is just down, riches to rags, and ends on a note of danger. Chapter 5 & 6 are long rise and sharp fall, icarus, ending with a disaster. 5 is a false disaster, for the sake of a cliffhanger. The last disaster leads into the next arc.

The central section is repetitive and gets a bit boring. This could be improved by adding clearly defined second act milestones (fun and games, midpoint, bad guys close in, all is lost).

What changes: the first attack from Naraku, he’s now an ongoing threat.

relationship between Inuyasha + Kagome hits a valley and she is banished to the modern world. Even though Inuyasha does it to protect her, it’s potentially the end of their romance.

Naraku — 8 chapters

This section is more complicated, relating important backstory for Naraku. The main antagonist here in terms of pages is a wolf demon named Royakan.

1. Kaede tells Inuyasha and Miroku about the evil cripple, Onigumo, and they go to investigate the cave where he died, ending on a note of danger / mystery.

Kagome is back in Tokyo wondering whether she will see Inuyasha again.

2. They discover that Onigumo became the demon Naraku in the cave. They are attacked by Royakan, who then flees. Inuyasha suspects Naraku is afoot.

3. Inuyasha recovers from his wounds in a shack and thinks about Kagome. Naraku gives Royakan a Shikon jewel and sends him back to attack again.

Kagome agrees to go on a date with a classmate but she’s still pining for Inuyasha.

4. Royakan attacks again, overpowering the injured Inuyasha. Miroku is thwarted by the wasps. Shippo flees to the well with the large Shikon shard, pursued by Royakan’s wolves.

Kagome is about to leave on her date, but visits the well one last time.

5. Inuyasha and Miroku are struggling to hold off Royakan. Shippo flees from the wolves into the well, bringing the Shikon shard.

Kagome reluctantly goes on the date, rushes back from the date, senses the shard, enters the well, and is finally sent back.

6. Inuyasha smells Kagome’s presence and gains strength. He overpowers Royakan and rushes to save Kagome from the wolves. They have a tearful / angry reunion. Kagome says she had to see him again. She senses the presence of Naraku and Inuyasha corners him. The chapter ends with a mystery hook — Naraku is about to reveal his past.

7. Naraku explains how he was born from the cripple when Kiyoko’s powers dissipated due to her love for Inuyasha. Naraku then sabotaged their love in the hope of corrupting the Shikon jewel, but Kiyoko’s self sacrifice thwarted his plans. The chapter ends with Naraku launching an attack.

8. Inuyasha somehow thwarts Naraku’s attack and the demon flees. Kagome removes the Shikon shard from Royakan and he reverts to normal and flees. Inuyasha vows revenge against Naraku for what he did to Kikyo. As Kagome is about to return to Tokyo, Inuyasha tells her he wants her near, though he’s secretly thinking of Kikyo.

Significance:

They get a Shikon shard.

They learn about Naraku.

Kagome and Inuyasha are reunited. There’s a love triangle brewing between Inuyasha, Kagome, and Kikyo.

Overall, this arc is a man-in-a-hole plot, with the relationship plot running parallel. Its more or less downhill (at first a slow burn and accelerating with the return of Royakan) until Kagome returns, at which point fortunes sharply reverse and the heroes quickly climb from the hole. The brief tussle with Naraku adds a small (illusory) reversal. The arc ends on a note of uncertainty, with Naraku at large still threatening their lives, and Kiyoko a threat to the romance plot.

Kikiyo — 6 chapters

1. Kikyo villain viewpoint. She is masquerading as a priestess in a village but is secretly eating souls. Cliffhanger on threat to Inuyasha.

Inuyasha and co. are helping Miroku with a job, protecting the spirits of the dead from demons. And it turns out that the demons are controlled by Kikyo (though they don’t know it yet), putting them on a collision course.

2. Kikyo slays a priest, demonstrating her threat.

The priest’s wounded disciple by chance meets the heroes and tells them of Kikyo. Inuyasha sets out to confront Kikyo alone, not wanting the others (Kagome especially) to witness the confrontation.

3. Kagome is jealous. She, Miroku, and Shippo set off after one of kikyo’s demons, but only Kagome can pass Kikiyo’s force field. She paralyses Kagome and makes her invisible because she considers her a rival. The chapter ends with Inuyasha approaching, and his relationship with Kagome in jeopardy — will he betray her? Or will Kikyo just try to kill him?

4. Kagome is forced to watch as Inuyasha and Kikyo embrace in a tender moment. It seems her fears have come true but then things get worse yet as Kikyo begins dragging Inuyasha into the underworld.

5. After failing to reason with Kikyo, Kagome uses her voice (some kind of priestess power) to weaken her and she flees. But Kagome is still angry at Inuyasha, unsure of his loyalty.

6. Kikyo learns the truth about Naraku from Kaede but cant let go of her bitterness against Kagome…

Kagome and Inuyasha fight, he says cares about both women, and can’t abandon kikyo because he feels responsible, then adds that he likes Kagome for herself, not as a replacement. Kagome accepts that for now.

Significance: this is mostly relationship and character arc. Kikyo can’t move beyond her past and is an ongoing threat. The relationship between Inuyasha and Kagome is more complex, though I wouldn’t say it’s worse.

Another straightforward man-in-a-hole plot, both the external plot and the relationship plot. For Kikyo it’s the reverse — Icarus.

Peach man — 7 chapters

This is the best arc in the book, the only one that’s a self-contained monster-of-the-week, not connected to the larger plot. It features a great mystery hook —- the floating heads, and features the use of shrinking, always a good chance for an artist to show off their skills. (The key is to reverse perspective, putting normally large things in foreground and normally small things looming in background) And the heroes get in by far the most danger.

1. It starts fast. Kagome wants to back home, but then they find human heads floating and she has to investigate.

Next is a short villain / victim viewpoint highlighting danger.

The heroes arrive at a mountain and find the source of the heads — a “peach” tree, grown by a demon. Inuyasha heads off to attack the demon, leaving the others behind. End of act 1.

2. the demon’s blubber repels Inuyasha’s attacks. The demon then shrinks and eats him.

Kagome, Shippo, and Miroku try floating up to the hermitage and fail, but they stumble into a back entrance. Inside, they too are shrunk, and are trapped in a miniature garden. Kagome loses the Shikon shard.

The peach man finds the shard. Inuyasha’s is being digested in his stomach and, to make matters worse, he’s turning human again. Things have gotten bad very quickly. How can they possibly get out of this one?

3. Inuyasha calls the Tetsusaiga to him, causing the peach man to vomit. Inuyasha escapes the stomach and returns to normal size, but he’s still weak (human), and the peach man captures him with vines to eat later.

K,M & S are trapped in the garden. The peach man reaches in for a snack and they jump onto his hand to escape.

4. The peach man decides to eat Kagome.

He comes out with her shirt and throws it before Inuyasha. Is she dead? Miroku, hiding in the peach man’s robe, uses his vortex to free Inuyasha from the vines. The peach man is incapacitated for the moment.

Kagome is in a sake bath. Various animal demons are preparing to cook her. Inuyasha bursts in and rescues her from them.

The peach man has recovered and, now transformed by the power of the Shikon jewel, goes to hunt the heroes.

5. Inuyasha and Kagome try to escape but reach a dead end, a room with a window overlooking the cliff (chekhov’s gun). There’s an old man in a flower pot who happens to be in this room, the peach man’s former master. The peach man arrives and explains how he stole the old hermit’s powers and became a demon because he wanted strength and eternal life after seeing his parents die in the mud. Inuyasha attacks him but is countered easily (he’s still human). The peach man urges him to drink the elixir of vitality to heal his wounds, but Inuyasha refuses, since it’s creepy murder juice.

An awful lot of exposition in this chapter, the arc loses momentum for the first time. The old master probably should have been introduced earlier, or just left out entirely. Do we need to know the peach man and his origins? This half-hearted attempt doesn’t add much but slows things down substantially. Were this Demon Slayer, the origin would have been handled in an emotional flashback highlighting the parents’ deaths.

6. With an assist from Kagome’s bow (the old man transformed, in an unnecessary twist), Inuyasha is able to push the peach man out the window, but the half-demon takes the tumble as well.

7. The Peach man dies in the fall. Inuyasha survives by landing in a tree. The others think he’s dead and Kagome is angry that he sacrificed himself (because she can’t live without him). Inuyasha overhears and misinterprets her, leading to a shouting match / lover’s spat. It’s the same type of misinterpretation of subtext that happens a lot, with neither of them able to express their true feelings. And represents the ongoing turbulent state of their romance — the author needs to keep them unfulfilled until the story ends.

Later, back in Tokyo, Kagome wonders whether Inuyasha will use the Shikon jewel to become a demon or a human. In the Sengoku, Inuyasha tells Miroku he wants to be a demon because his fight with the peach man has shown him how weak humans are. Miroku warns him he may lose his soul and end up eating Kagome. This moral dilemma reflects a central theme of Inuyasha : power is not worth the sacrifice of humanity. Or: love is more important than power. I expect this decision — whether to become human or demon — will play an important role in the eventual series climax.

Note that it is common to address long-term plotlines such as this in the sequels that follow the completion of arcs.

Significance: +Shikon shard. Other than that, the arc deepens characters and themes.

OK, I know I said I'd wait till I finished the series to give my full review, but with fifteen bind up's to go, I can't help it; I've got some things to say. And the critical reader's mind is a muscle- use it or lose it. First off, I was worried the manga and anime would be too similar, and while the characters and events exist in both mediums, the temperament, introduction, and pacing vary. Kagome is much more assertive in the manga (she directly asks Inuyasha what she means to him, and doesn't let herself play second fiddle to Kikyo either) and is more likely to jump in the fight, bows a blazin', rather than playing up the damsel in distress at every turn. The sexual tension is practically palpable (especially in this volume) but unfortunately so is Inuyasha's wishy washy attitude. It would've been five stars, but the section when he sent Kagome back to her own time was a bit of a snore on her end. I'm not attached to her human realm, but I do pity the guy who keeps falling for her rheumatism ruse. Kikyo/Naraku are wreaking havoc, in hearts and homestead. I'll admit, I did feel for Inuyasha a slight when he laments that Kikyo isn't cut and dry. But come on, he's spilling this vulnerable side to Kagome and goes in for the kiss of death with the other? Still, the action is awesome, nearly every chapter introduces a new conflict and every character gets some shine. Three down, fifteen to go... bring it on, VIZBIG.

This one gets so many loves for so many reasons. Sesshomaru comes back for some fun bloody times. I love the major difference between his role in the comics and the anime is that he is really a huge d*ck starting out. It's almost comical because he taunts Inuyasha and acts more like a sibling would. I love the aftermath and the big reveal of Naraku, it made me realize that between those 3 days Kaede somehow lost her eye and I can't wait to learn that story. Kikyo shows up once again and you go from pittying her to loathing her real quick. She is evil, I will always hate these chapters for what she does to the babies. And then you get the best character in the squad next to Sesshomaru. Sango. The introduction of Sango always makes me want to cry because her story is the most heartbreaking and the one I can relate to. Just baby!

Second reread. No matter how many times Inuyasha and Kagome bicker and misunderstand each other, I love the sweet and thoughtful moments that result from their interaction.

Some brothers just can't get along.

The manga like the anime has many parts of a long journey shared by Inuyasha and his friends. The following is a quick summary with hopefully not to many spoilers so you have an idea of which volume of the manga your favorite parts are if you are a long time fan or an idea of some of the things to come if you are new to the series. :)

After Inuyasha took his brother Sesshomaru's arm in a fight (to be fair it was started by Sesshomaru) he has been taking other arms to replace what he has lost. Certainly they may work for a bit but the power Sesshomaru possesses makes the substitutes temporary at best but Naraku has an idea to help Sesshomaru but being a deceitful man Naraku may be offering a gift with a price if Sesshomaru is not careful.

Realizing Kagome is in real danger so long as she is with him, Inuyasha takes steps to send her back to her time so she can be safe but injured by his brother Inuyasha must endure a plot on his life as Kagome tries to find a way back to feudal Japan. In the mean time we discover the origin of the demon Naraku.

Lady Kikyo returns to the story as she tries to find some peace in the borrowed form she was given by the demon Urasue (which regardless of what the book subscription on this page says has already occurred in volume two I believe.) However the price to sustain her body is a high one indeed and our heroes discover her secret but will Inuyasha have it within himself to stop the woman who had stolen his heart over 100 years ago now that truth of her betrayal is known?

Kagome has to return to study for an upcoming exam and Inuyasha is having none of that as they argue by a stream. Suddenly the arrival of human heads floating down the stream open a mystery of the strangely unbloodied heads but with the moon moon soon to rise again will Inuyasha be able to handle the Peachman before his powers fade?

Finally Sango the Demon executioner is on the job and discovers teh giant centipede had a shard of the Shikon Jewel so she brings it back to her village. However even though she just finished her mission a new mission came in so she has time to rest a bit before some of the best fighters from their clan must challenge their new foe. However Naraku is still in the shadows as Sango's world is about to change and the angry woman is going to be pointed right at our favorite half demon's head.

Inuyasha's brother returns for revenge, there is a man eating monster and an assassin's guide. It's nice that story keeps on changing it up, from being slay that monster get the shard, then rinse and repeat.

The love triangle is ever changing as well, since Kikyo came back things got a lot more complicated for Inuyasha. What I like is you can feel his internal struggle for both, one was his ex from the past that got away from him. Whilst Kagome is the new girl who he cares for deeply, so he's very torn between the two.

I like the monk and the fox but I hope they get to do a little more in the future, all the fox seems to do is change and be a gag whilst the monk just sucks spirits with his hand.

This installment showed another full moon and another look at human inuyasha. It’s always a dramatic scene when that happens. We also got another look at revived Kikyo. Inuyasha’s feelings were expressed and Kagome isn’t sure how to deal with them. When I was younger I always liked Kagome more and I still am feeling that way coming back to read the manga. She is more prevalent in his life and there haven’t been many scenes with the two of them to build an entire relationship for me. Obviously there is one and it’s old history but it never rugged at my heart strings enough to be attached to her. We got our first look at Sango and Kirara at the end of this book. She is hell bent on killing inuyasha now, which will continue into the next volume.

It's probably more of a 3.5, but that's okay. I think I was just pushing myself to read this when I should have just left it for a bit. I don't know how into it I am right now...

But anyway, Naraku is a shady-ass bitch and Kikyo needs to just die already. And we got introduced to Sango, who's one of my faves!! I can't wait to have the whole gang together.

I think this'll be more interesting to me once I hit the point where I don't know/remember what's going to happen... Unfortunately there's quite a ways to go before then.
