Savage Interlude

Kate's position was impossible!

Kate owed a lot to actor James St. Just. He had introduced her to his fascinating theater world. He treated her as his sister--the only family she had.

If only she and James could reveal that they were brother and sister. But until then, everyone must think they lived together as lovers.

Everyone included the handsome, irresistible movie producer Damien Savage. If Kate could live with James, Damien reasoned, she could live with him. But that was the last thing Kate wanted.

The entire story is in the blurb. Heroine is 18, has been living with her actor brother since she was 16. Since she is hot, hot, hot everyone assumes she is her brother's mistress. (!) Hero is a director and is in lust at first sight.

He chases. She runs - from him, from a rapey co-star of her brother's, from the nice guy who is boring, from a dude named Nigel. All those rapey guys - it's an embarrassment of riches.

Heroine eventually does something else besides hang around in bikinis, fending off suitors. When her brother gives up his life as a rake and marries his model girlfriend, she moves into a flat with another girl and actually goes to secretarial school.

Hero finds her and gives in to her demands to put a ring on it. He wants sex that bad. It's not the most artful proposal, but heroine wants to have sex and she wants to be married.

Hero grovels for the slut shaming after heroine gives up her v-card on their wedding night and finds out the truth of her relationship with her brother.

It's all very predictable, and a bit repetitious as the H/h go over the same ground repeatedly. It's more of a farce in tone than a romance. Think Benny Hill meets Harlequin Presents.

An over the top, ridiculous campfest the likes of which only Carole Mortimer can deliver with such tongue-in-cheek manner. The premise is basically that the leave'em and love'em film director hero is in hot pursuit of the heroine. He thinks she is an actor's mistress but she is actually his Seekret sister. They just let everyone assume they are lovers because of the scandal of her illegitimate birth. Cause that would be way more scandalous than people assuming she is his shacked-up mistress. 🙄

Fans of crazed, obsessed, mine-mine-mine, rakes will enjoy this wild ride. I skimmed a lot, because all their explosive encounters and Three's Company level qui pro quos were so repetitive but there were a couple of cute moments in there, like how he followed her into her bubble bath, fully dressed, to emphasize that she would never, ever, escape his clutches. :)))

"A Savage love only once and for always"

-Damien Savage

***
I haven`t read a intense romance by Carole Mortimer since i read her Living Together. In "Savage Interlude" the heroine lives with her half-brother who is a very famous actor. To avoid scandal they pretend to be lovers, somehow that trope reminds me of Fever by Charlotte Lamb where the heroine also lived with her step-brother.

I love Carole`s heroes especially when they are actor`s/directors,they tend to be so brooding and sexy!Damien Savage are totally on that list of being a smitten, jealous and possessive lover.Kate Darwood is a 18 year old young lady who (which was a relief to me) didn`t behave as a childish brat as most heroines by Carole usally do in that age, except the heroine in Freedom to Love as i remember. She pretty much behaved as a adult and which she had to when it came to the thunderous rogue Damien. She was a very worthy heroine throughout the story and she really growed on me when she decided to fight for her man!But what she didn`t know was that Damien also fought for her love..and his epic love declaration at the end just KILLED ME!!SO SWOONY..!

"Savage Interlude" is the story of Damien and Kate, and is all about little lies.
Kate is the step sister of movie star James, but he refuses to acknowledge her in fear of a scandal- making the world think of her as his mistress.
When the movie director Damien takes an interest in her, she returns the attraction- never dissipating his suspicion regarding her step-sibling- even when James marries his love Sheri.
What follows is an obsessed hero, two molestation attempt by a douche actor Matt, the couple breaking up and dating other people.. all the way to the very end when the truth is revealed post their wedding.
The story that could have been written in one line "he is my brother". I blame everything on Kate because Damien was pretty justified in his jealousy.
Not safe by definition

Typical CM story with older and more experienced hero and naive younger heroine.
There’s a BM that goes on until the end so the hero thinks she’s her brother’s mistress because nobody knows she’s his sister, half sister, since daddy dear had an affair while he was married with her brother’s mum- and still is.
The hero is a sleazy director and tries to manipulate the heroine into a sexual relationship but she’s pure and doesn’t want to give it before marriage.
The hero is more and more obsessed with her and even if he tries to move on his lil one refuses to work if it’s not the heroine. So until the end there’s this catch the fox kind of game where the hero tries to seduce her and eventually when he understands she’s not giving in, he proposes.
Of course there’s the Big Revelation where the hero finds out she’s a virgin and all is clear in the end.
It was entertaining because there’s this thing that the hero sees the heroine as a nympho and the heroine tries to resist him.
Not much angst since the man is clearly obsessed with her since the start and no way he can stay far from her.
I think he was celibate because he told her he tried to date women but he couldn’t do anything. Karma is a bitch!

I liked it! Crazy, out-of-his-mind-with-jealous-love Hero slamming around forcefully gripping the h's arms, dragging her away from other men, listening to her conversations ready to misconstrue everything she says. Couple that with a premade deception of half-siblings-as-lovers and you have a nice yummy recipe for drama!

Just one note: so everybody thinks this late-30's famous actor's been shacking up with a live-in lover since she was 16 years old? Hmm...

Ok. This is just slightly sick...brother/sister posing as lovers?? What?? OK. I know she was a "secret love child" but give me a break! And another 18 year old in love with an experienced rake who can't tell a virgin from a who$# anymore?

This book was not a good read for me.

4 Stars! ~ Kate Darwood’s life changed dramatically when her biologically father acknowledged her in his will as his daughter. All her young life she’d been taunted by peers in school and by her stepfather as the illegitimate mistake. Now she has the financial security to pursue whatever she wants, only she’s promised her half-brother, James never to reveal her connection to him or his father. The scandal would destroy James’ mother and be detrimental to James’ career as an actor. Yet James wanted very much to be her protective brother, so he took Kate in and they’ve been living together with the public assumption that they are a couple. Damien Savage was the sought after director-producer in England and Hollywood. Every movie he’s involved with turns to career gold. When Damien demands a date with Kate, she feels obligated to agree when she believes that a role James seeks is at stake. Damien holds nothing back in letting Kate know that he desires her and he tries to seduce her into moving in with him. Kate knows only too well what consequences affairs may have and she’s aware of how dangerous Damien is to her resolve to steer clear.

Kate is young but she’s not totally naïve to the way of men. Damien’s pursuit of her is relentless and even though he comes across sometimes as an arrogant brute, we can clearly see that he’s totally under Kate’s spell and can’t keep himself away from her. Kate is a spunky heroine who isn’t intimidated by Damien but does fear his increasing power over her own desires. Some may find Damien over the top in arrogance and not see the man Ms. Mortimer gives us glimpses of and doesn’t fully reveal until the end of the book. I easily seen what Kate seen and fell in love with. Well done!

This is an oldie from 1979. The H wears white trousers, like men did in those days. I didn’t dare to read if his white trousers were tight.

Anyway, it’s a vintage with a virgin 18-year old h and an experienced, rich 33-year old H.

She lives with her half-brother, but nobody knows that they are family. So everyone, including the H, thinks she is her half-brother’s mistress.

They make out a few times, but she doesn’t go all the way with the H until he has put his ring on her finger.

So the H says to her: “I’ve paid a high price for you - my freedom. That’s the highest price any man can pay for a woman.” Hehe.

The story was angsty. Lot of misunderstanding kept the tension brewing between the hero and the heroine. But I could not connect to either of them. Neither did I understand how and when did they fall in love with each other. The heroine, Kate says she was infatuated with the hero when she first saw him on the big screen. Since she had grown up she hid her infatuation behind a facade of careless disregard, dislike. Then she meets him again, and she is falling in love with him again. In fact she had always been in love with him.

Now lets talk about the hero Damien. Since he laid eyes on the heroine who is younger to him by 15 years, (she is just 18)he had been lusting after her, trying to seduce her and get her into his bed. He even admits to it. He spends half of the book chasing her, seducing her and trying to get her into his bed.

Then "wham!", we get a confession from the "tortured" hero that he loves the damned heroine and had always been in love with her and has finally realized and accepted his feelings for her. It was love and not just lust. He had been trying to fight it, deny it but he just couldn't get her out of his system.

He suffered from the misconception that she was a "worldly" woman but when he realizes she is "innocent" everything changes, of course! So we get a HEA.

I seriously doubt their love for each other. It is all physical lust and nothing more. There hasn't been a single instance of them making a effort to show a different side of their feelings. It was always lust, plain and simple! How could they cloak their feelings under the guise of love? Disgusting couple! Though very very enjoyable, if you are fond of angsty reads.

Savage seduction…From the moment successful movie producer, Damien Savage, saw talented actress, Kate Darwood, he wanted her! The only problem is — she’s married! But all is not as it seems. Kate’s “husband” is her secret brother and to save their family from scandal, the world must continue to think they’re a couple. But now that handsome stranger Damien seems set on seducing her, suddenly innocent Kate wants to share all her secrets…

I read this one quite a few years back and can still remember exactly what happens. Although the characters seemed a bit immature and outlandish to me, I did think it was alright to pass the time.

Its always going to be a bit bonkers if the h and her (secret) brother are living together and people assume they are lovers for years and they allow it to continue, in fact the brother rather seems to thrive on it.
The H immediately falls for the h despite thinking she's a brother lover and does everything he can to split them up and adds 2 + 2 together to come up with 5 every time he overhears something.
He is bloody awful to the h and says all kinds of offensive things, why she falls for him I will never know but she does until he eventually marries her despite thinking shes a gold digging ho.
Only after the bedding and realising her innocent status does he question the story and confronts her brother for the truth.
These 2 dum dums deserve each other an honest conversation earlier on would have sorted their issues 150 pages earlier!

Drama drama and misunderstanding
Good old school HP (I guess it belongs to the author's best period of inspiration): cruel-mean hero thinks our heroine is a "tramp" but nonetheless pursues her with punishing kissing and groping.
She hides the truth for family's sake and accepts kisses and groping 😉

A silly one in my opinion, where even the mature hero's dialogue sounded like a teenager's. And that aside, I just wasn't that drawn into the story and didn't real feel the characters' affection for each other.

I can't even with this book. I. Can't. Even. The only reason this has 2 instead of 1 star(s) is that I'm a weak little bitch who apparently feels sorry for men even when they don't deserve it. I softened at his grovelling, and I hate myself for it.

I'm not even going to put out a spoiler alert because anyone who decides to read this book must know that it's literally crazy and so very wrong.

1. He blackmailed her into going to a party with him.
2. He kidnapped her from said party.
3. Tried to seduce her even when she didn't want it.
4. Blamed her for Matt Strange's disgusting behaviour towards her.
5. Constantly insinuated that she was a woman of loose morals.
6. Told her if she didn't stop, one day one of the men she "teased" would snap and rape her.
7. Basically forced himself on her on their wedding night and LAUGHED when she fought back.
8. Told her he had paid the highest price for her (his "freedom") and would now collect on what she owed him.
8. And she still fell in love with him?

A simple sorry in the end doesn't work for me. Even though, rationally, I know his willingness to sacrifice at the end was a good attempt at redemption, it's still too little too late. He was arrogant in the beginning, cruel and rude in the middle, and only showed a little penance towards the end. I don't see any reason why she fell in love with him, he was a bully and a brute. And what was his excuse? It was because he loves her and got jealous. I agree she was a stupid piece of shit, but he was no better. Every time he told her she was driving him crazy, she never tried to destroy the illusion that she was seeing other men. Like I GET why she couldn't out the Jason secret, but what about the others? What the actual fuck? This book made me so angry and so frustrated, I want to do a white man's punch-the-wall schtick. I'm also tremendously annoyed at myself. Because as much as I want to absolutely hate and abhor this book, I can't seem to hate it to a non-redeemable level and it's genuinely driving me insane. So damn insane that I've read the last bit of him apologising three times already (which is crazily annoying because I really do hate this entire book which thrives on the kind of miscommunication I abhor.) That's the curse of being a fucking understanding and empathetic piece of shit. I understand his frustration so I can't be as angry with him as I want to. I'm so irritated. I can't hate him. I won't love him. I can't get over this toxicity.

Oh and also, believe me when I say this, I would never, and I mean never let a man treat me like this. That, I can promise you. I will never be as weak-willed or as idiotic as her.

Edit: I have now come to the conclusion that the only Harlequin books I truly like (like truly truly, not trashy or corny novella truly) are written by our lord and saviour Julie Miller. No one else writes better Harlequin books than her because her men are considerate, protective, and aren't mfkn dicks. They're all respectful and understand C O N S E N T.
On that note, can I get a fuck you, Damien? FUCK YOU DAMIEN.

Edit(2): Okay, I've given it a lot of thought and I'm being unfair by not subjecting Kate to the same level of animosity. She claims to hate this guy, but in the same breath kisses him back every single time he's close. Also, every time he comes to her aid or he says he's missed her or whenever he's being all I-really-like-you while other people try saying shit to her, she NEVER clears the misunderstanding. Unnecessary drama. How hard can it be to say, "I know what it looks like, and I don't even care what the rest of them think. James and I are friends. Old family friends. And if you can't believe me when I say that, you don't deserve any of my caring. And also, not that it's any of your business but I'm not sleeping with everyone, you dick."
See? That took me, what, 10 seconds to conjure up? Does it reveal her and James' secret? No. Would it have shown Kate having an actual fucking backbone instead of just pretending to have one? Yes.

I can't see how this is love and the whole intention by the hero is to get the heroine in bed. He is more addicted to the physical attraction than anything else. I have difficulty connecting as "love" when it is purely physical.

This book was published in 1980.
Reading it in the 21st century, it certainly seems outdated but it's also a "guilty" pleasure.
An obsessed man and an innocent girl. Not bad.
It's a kind of sugary, conservative and naive erotic romance.
And it's true. Romances were much more romantic back then.

This is deeply of its time, the characters are idiots, and it's kind of amazing. Love that the hero is both dumb as hell and driving himself insane with love for the heroine. He's just so deeply stupid!! I don't even really mind that he didn't suffer longer after realizing how wrong he was. Also notable for containing the phrase "she said bitchily," which did shock me a bit. Warning: no actual rape, but the hero does threaten to rape the heroine multiple times and assault her once while drunk af before passing out. It's kind of played off as nbd in that weird way that sometimes happens in old school romance.

Well.... OTT alpha asshole. The H called the h bitch several times. Dub cons, typical oldies tho, the H threatened to forced the h to have sex with him. The h was scared of him in some scenes and thankfully I'm not very logical and realistic right now so I gave this quite a high score. Disappointingly no baby by the end of the book.

Another CM H whose lines vary from "I want you and I mean to have you" to "you tease" to "I am going to take you, by force if I have to". Politically correct it ain't. He's a film director called Damien Savage and she (Kate) is an 18 year old v who lives with her actor secret step brother. Everyone believes them to be lovers, especially the H. It's utter nuts. I ploughed on through with my eyebrows getting higher and higher. She holds out for a wedding ring and gets it plus a declaration.

The first part of the book was cool boys chasing girls..but I grew tired of it until the last chapter of this book..it's unfair for the hero, Sheri (the heroine future sister- in law) knows that James and the heroine are half sister..Why not tell the hero the truth to spare him of his agony lol the story revolved around hero' s Jealousy from heroins brother and friends..
