Pete figured there would be a lot of reading in sixth grade, but he didn't count on adding the minds of his teachers and classmates to the list. Knowing what they think can be helpful sometimes, but it can also get complicated -- ESPecially when Pete discovers the substitute teacher is thinking about a big robbery.
It is always fun to read about ESP, knowing what will happen or what people are thinking. Pete isn't so sure his ability is trustworthy. Especially when he mistakes a teacher's plan to commit a robbery as robbing the school. But as the teacher's plans come together, Pete chooses to intervene, again. But will he win his lady fair?
This is a cute little chapter book for the early tween reader. It has just enough excitement to keep one interested, has the sort of everyday detail that kid's can relate to, has touches of humor and has nice little 'no cheating' and 'anti-bullying' messages. I really like Pete and Casey and think adding Rodney is a good touch. I suspect these three will have some more adventures together. I won a copy of this book in a Goodreads giveaway for this honest review.
I'm not a fan of the paranormal, but regardless of my thoughts about ESP, this is a book that I will happily encourage my children to read someday (my oldest is just five years old). The book uses Pete's ESP to address issues relevant to kids today...cheating, bullying and friendship to name just a few. I think middle school students will find the book to be highly entertaining while fully relating to the underlying issues that Pete faces.
Note: I received this book as a free giveaway as part of Goodreads First Reads.
I happily recommend this book to any middle schooler or their parents. It reminded me of my own middle school reading years with the Hardy Boys .In ESPete, I even learned a thing or two about the sixth sense!
The book uses Pete's special gifts to address issues relevant to kids today including cheating and bullying. It has a strong moral center.
I think middle school students will find the book to be highly entertaining while fully relating to the underlying issues that Pete faces. And parents should know that their kids are reading good stuff!
Pete is a 6th grader with ESP. He deals with a bully, a teacher who is a thief and the girl of his dreams as he becomes more comfortable using his gift.
I think kids will really like Pete and this story. It is the first of a series and I am sure they will want to read more of these E.S.Pete books. I know I am looking forward to the next one!
I won a copy of this book through goodreads giveaways. It was a quick, fun middle grade read. Pete has ESP and is able to hear the thoughts of people around him. When he hears his substitute teacher planning on robbing a bank he's not sure what to do to stop him. Ages 8+
Received this free from Goodreads in exchange for an honest review. Yes, the story was cute, but so short and with a few puzzles thrown in for good measurer it would not be worth the effort or cost.
My ten year old son also read this book so I will combine our thoughts...
Pete seems your average 6th grader who struggles to get good grades, likes a girl and deals with a bully. However, Pete has a extra special sense...mind reading! Pete has kept the mind reading to himself until a substitute teacher comes along. Pete knows the teacher wants to rob a bank. He tells the girl he likes and the bully of their teachers plan. The two take Pete at his word and try to figure how they can stop the substitute from robbing a bank on their upcoming field trip. But how can they get anyone to believe them?
A fun adventure of mind reading that will capture the imaginations of children and make them wonder if they too have this extra special sensory.
My son moaned and groaned initially about reading this book but once he started he couldn't stop, he thought it was great. I enjoyed it as much as any juvenile fiction...it was cute. There was a teensy bit of what I thought was questionable promotion encouraging kids, with parents permission, to report their ESP experiences on a website. I'm sure it's all in good fun but not something I would want my child to get overly involved with.
Pete has Extrasensory Perception, he can read minds. What does this mean for a sixth-grader? How can he use this ability to his advantage, and, on the other hand, how can it make his life more difficult?
I read this book with my sixth-grader and noted that she related to the details about middle-school, and chuckled, especially about things Rodney, the bully, said and did. I think this book captures the essense of life for a typical group of eleven-year-olds. It is done with humor and a likable character, Pete, who narrates throughout.
There is a boy-girl (potential?) relationship, issues with a bully, a creepy substitute teacher (who may be a criminal) and a school counselor who wants to take Pete 'on the road' with his ESP. The story keeps you interested and wanting to know what happens next.
When we finished the book, my daughter wanted to know if there was another ES Pete book to read. We'd love to see a whole series of adventures for Pete!!
What a fabulous story! I received this book in exchange for my honest review. Middle grade can be confusing, but especially when you can read people's thoughts. In this humorous MG story, the main character, Pete, is learning to understand his gift, avoid the bully, and get the girl, all while trying to save the day. What I loved about this book, besides the creative use of ESP in the character "ES Pete", is that it is extremely well written. The word choice is spot on, the characters jump off the page, and the plot is very fun to follow. Rudnick even includes an awesome game at the back of the book, which I won't spoil for you. I would recommend this book for any young reader.
This was a really fun book. I would have loved to hear my teachers thoughts. Especially when they thought about assignments or answers. I was the kind of student that was a pain, but only when I knew I was right. his would have given me so much more information! I can only imagine how our conversations could have changed. I loved that this book was interactive and that i had to pick a number before I read. At the end of the book there is an ESP quiz that relates to that number! I picked the same number as Pete! This is sure to be a fun reads for kids. I am giving this book a 5/5. I was given a copy to review, however all opinions are my own.
