Rate this book
As Elaan learns about who she is and what her species can do, the galactic government pressures her for more information on the ancient enemy. Somewhere beyond the Four Rings lies the territory of the Surentur. Hunter and Trash want to investigate, but they have to find it first. To protect the Iguacans, they need a better understanding of the current political situation in that sector. Hunter's past endangers them all when a woman he's never met makes revelations about his origins. Old ghosts rise up to distract him at a time when he most needs to focus. In the chaos of the brand new Iguacan embassy, Elaan must decide which secrets are too dangerous to share, even with her trusted advisors. Her people have abilities far beyond what they are willing to show to the galaxy.

I finished this book some time ago, staying up until 3 a.m. at least one night to do so. I initially gave it four stars, then changed my rating to five stars because I found myself wondering if the third book in the series had come out yet. That's a sign that it made an even better impression on me than I thought.

I'm enjoying this series because about the time I think I've figured out all the different cultures, something really surprising, yet completely logical, comes up.

Also, I just enjoy the writing. It's straightforward and unpretentious, so easy to read I could forget I was reading. Going to go now to check on the status of book 3.

Full of intriguing ideas

These are the foundational questions for our species. How will humans react if there are other intelligent beings in the universe? What defines human if a person is born off Earth? What if other beings have abilities we don't? Who are you really when things get complicated? The characters in this collection of books face these questions and situations that challenge them to grow. You are caught up in the story telling and taken on voyages of discovery.
