Saddle up and enjoy this charming tale of a spirited heroine and a mysterious hero. Peggy Fielding does it again by creating interesting characters in a romantic tale that is laced with interesting historical tidbits and a memorable secondary cast that includes a crazy mule and an affectionate pig! SCOUNDRELS' BARGAIN will tickle your funny bone and make you sigh with pleasure as you experience early Oklahoma on this sentimental journey. Debby Camp, Author of Primrose and Lady Legend
Annie Lee Twig is trying to get her 160 acres of Oklahoma Territory set up to become her own. She is one of those people who raced to get land and she intends to make her new home fit for her and her family. Her family consists of Uncle George, a man who drinks to excess and her younger sister Ary. Ary is nearly 14 years old and she will soon become a mother. These three people have come to the Oklahoma Territory from Arkansas. And what they left in Arkansas is not anything Annie wants to remember.
Annie needs a hired hand in the worst way, her last one died after being there for 3 days. Suddenly a passing cowboy offers to work for her and with her to help her get her land in shape. John Wesley Matlock is handsome and a hard worker and he talks like a gentleman.
Because Annie is beautiful she has drawn the attention of her neighbor Henry Trent. He intends to “take her”. His son Junior is completely smitten with Ary, and Henry absolutely refuses to have his son connected to such “trash.”
I realize this does not sound like a charming story, but it is.
Annie uses “yarbs” to heal anyone in the area who needs medical care. Slowly she begins to realize that her speech shows she is not educated, and she plans to improve by listening to the way John talks.
Annie has a soft heart so when she is offered a pig named Mrs Gulliver as payment for some of her medical work, she brings the pig home. Mrs Gulliver lives in the house and falls in love with John. Annie has a mule named Lucifer who attacks anyone he does not like. Lucifer does not like anyone but Annie.
Uncle George plays the fiddle and Annie and Ary sing hymns like angels. And through it all, Annie and Ary and Uncle George think the best of everyone and everything.
These people have so little and yet are grateful for everything they have. They are willing to work hard for everything and to make the land into a place which can make a living for them.
I really enjoyed this book and if you want a story that will make you smile, this is the book for you.
Annie Twig, along with her alcoholic uncle and pregnant 14 year old sister, set off for greener pastures in Oklahoma territory. After nabbing some prime real estate in the land rush, she's willing to do anything to keep her land. She hires John Wesley Matlock, knowing that she can't pay him. John is a Pinkerton detective, searching for why Annie and her family left so suddenly, and trying to locate a certain cousin rather inconveniently missing. John knows that Annie knows what happened, but they make a deal not to talk about it. Soon, Annie has John jumping through hoops, as their affection for each other grows. With a widower for a neighbor who wants Annie for himself, things start getting interesting on Annie's ranch. Annie was a likeable character, and will do just about whatever she has to in order to see her family is taken care of. Yet she does nothing for herself. In many ways, it's a bit infuriating. Yes, she does a great job of keeping her family cared for, but she doesn't care for herself at all. And John is so completely smitten, he will do anything Annie asks, even the most ridiculous things. He'll stand up to anyone BUT Annie... so in that way, they fit together pretty well. All in all, it was an enjoyable read, but I don't think I'll want to reread it anytime soon.
Not bad, not great. I liked the characters, but I think the story as a whole needed to be pared down a bit. There was a lot of dramatic things that happened, but no real... I don't know.. suspense? tension? anticipation? I finished it, but only because I was hoping something would happen.
Not really a keeper for me, but not a terrible way to pass the time if you're looking for something easy to read.
First read for this author. This was a quick read. Loved the spunky Annie but the best characters in the book were the animals, Lucifer was terrific! While not an intense plot, it does have spots where you want to reach into the Kindle and punch someone! I would definitely pick up another book by this author.
Annie Twig from Arkansas packs up her family and makes a run for land when the Indian Territory in Oklahoma is opened up to settlers. Once there, along comes John Wesley Matlock. This is an endearing, humorous love story and is sure to make you smile.
I liked this book, it kept me interested. Two young gals and their uncle leave Arkansas for Oklahoma, they enter the land rush and get some land. The Pinkerton rep shows up and is hired by Anne, the eldest sister. A few bad words, and just a touch of sex (sexual scene) I rate it LS-NoG
Nice to read a book without a lot of unnecessary gratuitous sex or violence. It is a good story where all the answers are not revealed until near the end I would read more y this author
