Today I took a train for about 2hours. This vol.6 was most excited book I’ve ever read. An individual match, B-rank, Taichi vs Nishida, D-rank, Kanade vs Komano. They are all Mizusawa high school karuta club members! I wondered who will win. I really wanted to read a whole book as soon as possible, so I was reading it all the time when I was taking a train. I think you’ll feel so excited, too!
After Taichi falls short in the B-class finals at the tournament he and Nishida attended at the end of the prior volume, the whole Mizusawa team heads off to another individual tournament. Chihaya finds herself frustrated by her coach's admonition to stop winning with speed and by her opponent, a nice cheerful middle-aged lady who calmly builds a commanding lead by simply taking advantage of Chihaya's faults and accurately taking what's available, forcing Chihaya to acknowledge that speed really might not be everything (gasp!). As for the rest of the team, things take a dramatic turn when the other four team members end up matched against each other in the class B and class D finales, much to Chihaya's delight (because she loves seeing her friends succeed), disappointment (since she wishes she was competing in the A class finale), and horror as she can't watch both at the same time. Finally, with the annual Master/Queen match qualifier coming up, the Empress puts her foot down and tells Chihaya she can't go as her grades are so bad that she's in danger of having to repeat the year if she doesn't buckle down and study for exams and puts her under Komano's guidance for an intense study session.
The highlight of this volume for me has to be the match between Kanna and Komano in the D-class finals. Both of them have been growing in skill in the background and have started to win matches regularly and now we get to see the results of their efforts as the two both put their personal styles of karuta on display, with each embracing different strengths. Komano plays using his analysis, strategy, and focuses on exploiting his opponents weaknesses, while Kanna plays a graceful flawless style built on her love of the poems. On the one hand, by comparison to most of the matches we follow, they're still both kind of rough, but Chihaya ends up watching their match over Taichi and Nishida's largely because their rough original styles offer her more ideas to learn from than Taichi and Nishida's more orthodox and refined play. Other than that, this volume also reminds us that for all that she is quite skilled with karuta, Chihaya is otherwise a bit of a mess as she doesn't study well, her grades are abysmal, and she has no plan for her future other than "becoming Queen," which... doesn't exactly pay the bills.
Anyway, another volume down, another 5 star review.
This volumes shifts the focus away from Chihaya to show us how far the other four on the team have grown. And much deserved.
Kana who loves these poems already and their cultural history and approaches the game from a very different place. Tsutomou who had the steepest learning curve of them all. Nishido who has put his everything in daily trainin. And Taichi who just deserves a break from all the pressure he puts on himself. They all deserve to win.
In a whole lot of ways, not much happens. Sure, there is progress toward promotion and getting better, but for the most part, the entire volume is about Chihaya introspecting while Taichi also wants to rank up. The other karuta club members' existence is also justified, as they are featured in this volume with some emphasis. I think it is mostly a "nothing burger" volume; however, at the same time, I think it's necessary for the story to marinate and feel rewarding when achievements bound to happen in the storyline occur. Fantastic art, as always.
27 december 2024 - book four. love this volume because it shows how analytical playing a masterful a karuta match can be. chihaya is learning different techniques in order to improve her game, whilst the other team members are trying to approve their rank as well as techniques. KODANSHA PLEASE PRINT THE ENGLISH VOLUMES I BEG
I love how this volume focuses more on the other teammates in the karuta club - the author is good in inclusivity, portraying that not only Chihaya is changing and excellent in karuta, but everyone else are just as good too. This volume made me support them so much! They deserve to win respectively~
Yep this is some good stuff, having everyone in the club but the captain in the final competing each other was really good. Chihaya getting her confidence back will be fun to see and Arata is back in the game. Overall the series is getting slowly better!!

not really much i have to say about this volume, however I will say that the match between kana-chan and desk-kun was really exhilarating and I am beyond happy that chihaya is looking at the big picture and learning from those around her. at the same time, feel bad for taichi, he's worked so hard and he just has such bad luck T-T but I'm also glad for nishida, he deserved to go up in rank.
