I can't even. I just can't. Ronie is THE WOMAN when it comes to writing incredible, fast-paced military action with twists that I can't even hint at because they're too awesome.
You NEED to read this extremely well-written, entertaining, makes-you-Google-things book!! I can't even begin to say enough! My eyes rounded, my mind raced, and my breath was stolen. I loved this book!

Oh my gosh, guys! I loved this military thriller with hints of romance. Ronie Kendig has made her place in fiction with novels that have high octane military action, and Conspiracy of Silence is a FANTASTIC addition. This novel has political overtones, Biblical archaeology threads, and the military, globe-jumping pacing. There is a fantastic, reluctant team that comes together to try to stop a global plague from spreading. This plague may have ties to the Old Testament, but it's spreading and they have to find a way to stop it before it makes the Black Plague look like a small killer.
I love the action in Conspiracy of Silence. As someone who grew up reading Tom Clancy, it all strikes me as realistic, hard-hitting, and can't-put-me-down intense. The whispers of romance were light enough to give a moment to breathe without feeling forced. And the team dynamic of the group was pitch perfect. They didn't all get along all the time, but what team does? Conspiracy of Silence can also feel like you're part of a globe trotting escapade as you race around the world with Tox's team. I appreciated that this story stood alone, but also cannot wait for the next installment.
This book is perfect for those who love page-turning thrillers with heart.

I have mixed feelings about Conspiracy of Silence. Parts of the story were kind of hard to follow and, honestly, that made those scenes boring. Other parts were really good and had me eager to keep reading.
I liked the characters and I think the next book will be really good because I know them all already. I didn't care so much for the archeological aspect in this story, it was just a little confusing to follow (at least to me). Also, I found the ending a bit abrupt.
All in all, even with the things I didn't like, this wasn't a bad story. I can see why so many others loved it and, if you enjoy this genre, you might too. Just be sure to read the prequel first. I feel like one of the mistakes I made was not reading the prequel before starting this, as I feel like that would have helped me not be as confused.

Conspiracy of Silence is a thriller with Cole Russell "Tox" as the main character. Kasey has the role of primary female character. They are both admirable characters. I liked them both.
The story line was a good one. The delivery though didn't pull me into the novel and I lost interest after the first quarter of the book.

Whew! I was sweating bullets several times in this book! LOL Intense and suspenseful with lots of action, you'll be on the edge of your seat literally biting your nails as you read the first book in Ronie Kendig's new series, Conspiracy of Silence (Tox Files #1).
You can't help but feel Tox's pain and guilt as he's brought out of hiding after three years. His hard won somewhat peaceful existence is turned on its ear when a dormant, centuries-old disease is unleashed and the President of the United States sends for him. His reunion with his team and his family and friends evokes pain all around. Can they forgive him and will they choose to trust him again? Can Tox forgive himself and leave the guilt behind?
I liked Tox's depth of character and his determination to do his best to protect his family and to make things right with his team. He's learned a lot from his friend, Chiji, while exiled for three years in Nigeria but struggles to put that to action when in the midst of battle. I love Chiji and their interaction. He's very protective of Tox, while at the same time pushing him to be a better person.
I also liked Casey's character. It was so interesting to read her methods as a deception specialist for the FBI. She proves invaluable several times to the team with her observations. She's also known Tox since she was a child and has never really got over her secret crush. She's been married and goes by a nickname so Tox doesn't know who she is at first. Romance takes a backseat in this story but the vibes between those those two are great! :)
The secondary characters (his team, the archaeologists, the FBI team, etc) add a great complexity to the story. Each team member is unique but they work together with a unity that uses each team member's strengths to their advantage. At the same time there is some mystery with several characters that leaves you wondering - are they on our side or not? You also might want to read the free novella, Warrior's Seal, which introduces several characters and explains what happened to get Tox exiled.
With a mind boggling spin through 7 (yes SEVEN!) countries and a lot of fast paced black-ops combat action, a mix of biblical archaeological finds, the release of a deadly plague, and a secret society involving the top rungs of the world's society - whew! - there's no doubt you'll be riveted to this book!

Conspiracy of Silence was absolutely FANTASTIC! It was truly packed with danger, conspiracy, mystery, romance, Biblical history, and so much more. I loved the characters and the set up for this book. The fact that the two main characters, Kasey Cortes and Cole “Tox” Russell, know each other from the past just amps up the tension between the two as they work together.
This book was such a great blend of modern day military action and tactical situations, while also introducing the reader to possible theories involving curses and plagues. Throw in attraction between the two main characters and a boat load of guilt that Cole carries around and I could hardly set this book down. It just got better and better with each turn of the page. I am looking so forward to reading more in this series.

Explosive and non-stop - Ronie Kendig has done it again with Conspiracy of Silence!
Following on the heels of her FREE novella Warrior’s Seal, we jump straight in to a high-octane adventure following the determined and slightly mysterious Cole “Tox” Russell. Woven together with archeological clues, threads of romance, and rocketing suspense at every corner, you won’t be able to put this book down until the end.
I really enjoyed Tox’s character development in this story. There is still a lot that is mysterious about him, yet we were able to get a window into his past. I also love the team dynamic – no one does it better than Ronie when it comes to hunky team members with a ton of character. I love how separate they all are and yet how well they fit together.
Then, of course, there was the romance. Not as much as in her previous books sadly, but still zinging where it was brought out. I would love to see more in the next book, but I’m a sucker for romance in general! I think the balance was good in this first book though. It felt realistic when there is a big mission to be focusing on, you’re not going to always be thinking of “the girl” but more “the mission”. So I do appreciate the real-ness.
I also loved how fast-paced Conspiracy was. There was never a dull moment and that led to many pages (and chapters) read long after I should have been sleeping.
If you are a fan of suspense, military fiction, or anything Ronie’s written in the past – this book will not disappoint! Think of it like a mix between David Baldacci, James Rollins, and Ronie’s classic rapid-fire fiction. Her writing is clear, succinct, compelling, and just right for the action-packed thrill ride I expect to take for a story of this magnitude.

Oh my! Conspiracy of Silence is full of intense, thrilling action with a suspenseful plot. The team members are loyal and have each other's backs, even with a harsh history of being caught in the middle of politics and lies. Mistrust and misinformation brings a tension to the scenes as Tox must work with agency contacts and intel that is being fed to him piecemeal and objectives are changed mid-mission. Tox is a strong and determined character with highly skilled training, but he also has his share of flaws and emotional vulnerabilities- which made him more easy to relate to. I loved Kasey's role as the deception expert, and her history of having an unrequited crush on Tox. She sees him differently than most, and has an innate sense for his real self under all the defenses (except when it comes to how he feels about her). Another great character in Tox's life is Chiji, a member Tox added to his team after spending time with his family while exiled in Nigeria. His calming influence was needed several times throughout the story as Tox's rage escalates. It's interesting how he can keep his cool in all sorts of crazy dangerous scenarios but when his loved ones are harmed, he comes a bit unglued. The Biblical history of the artifacts, Codex, and secret societies are fascinating, especially as they tie in to the present-day war for power. I definitely recommend reading the free e-book of the prequel novella, The Warrior's Seal, since it introduces the characters and gives details of the mission that is referred to several times in Conspiracy of Silence. I'm looking forward to reading the next installment in The Tox Files and learning more about the team members!
Highly recommend to fans of H.B. Moore's Omar Zagouri series and Julie Coulter Bellon's Griffin Force series!

I swear Ronie just keeps getting better and better! I have been an avid fan of hers since I read Dead Reckoning back in 2010 and I've loved every book she has written since. If I would have had my way I would have sat down with this book the second it arrived and not gotten up till it was done, but unfortunately with the craziness of my life right now it took me what seemed like forever to finally be able to finish it. And Tox had to travel with me several places including work, a tire place, and to have my oil changed. I always hated having to put it down because I was on the edge of my seat from page one. I loved the premise behind this new series from the fact that almost everyone believed the hero had been dead for years to the whole plague aspect, and the unique biblical spin on it all. I got to meet Tox and his team in the prequel novella and they all intrigued me greatly. Tox has a very tough exterior but he cares deeply about those close to him and will do anything and everything it takes to protect them and for that I greatly admired him. He kinda got the short end of the stick and I really couldn't blame him for his gruffness at all. His team was a very diverse group and I would love to get more of all of their stories, especially Ram. Tzivia and Kasey were both great characters but I like Kasey a little more and I really hope she and Tox end up together.
This story was brilliantly and beautifully crafted from start to finish in typical Kendig style and I recommend it for anyone who loves an adventure, male and female alike! Though make sure to read the prequel novella first since they are extremely connected!

Y'all, Ronie Kendig has done it again!! Bigger, better than ever before. I'm in awe at her storytelling skills right now. First you need to know, Conspiracy of Silence, the 1st book in The Tox Files, is like Da Vinci Code meets Elisha's Bones meets her Discarded Heroes series. It is that AMAZING! I had to read every single word, afraid I would miss something pivotal.
The history, fight scenes, romantic tension, all made for a page turning read. Seriously!! It was like normal Ronie Kendig writing after drinking an energy drink. And the leading man, Cole "Tox" Russell, who we met in The Warrior's Seal (0.5 in Tox Files), is back from the dead...or at least that's what everyone else believes.
He's been called back because he's the only one able to carry out the government's mission. Of course, he calls in his team, Cell, Chiji, Ram, and Haven "Kasey" Cortes. Everyone in his team adds an intriguing layer to the story which must be devoured in one sitting!

Indiana Jones meets The Da Vinci Code meets military action movie of your choice is an apt description for this book. Military strategy, archeological digs, ancient artefacts, Biblical history, even a touch of romance; Ronie Kendig stretches the boundaries of what we have come to expect from her military suspense. In Conspiracy of Silence we have the same military heroes, weapons, and tactics, but a whole other level is added that takes almost a fantastical turn.
I read this book and the prequel novella simultaneously. I started The Warrior's Seal, then started Conspiracy of Silence, finished The Warrior's Seal and then finished Conspiracy of Silence. I think reading The Warrior's Seal first is advisable as it sets the scene for this series, introduces some of the main characters, especially Tox, and gives the reader an insight into the tone and subject type of Conspiracy of Silence. But if you choose to read Conspiracy of Silence first or alone, then I think you will be able to catch up without too much trouble. Simply know that four years ago, while stationed in Syria, Tox and his men were called in to rescue the President. The mission took a side turn when they discovered that his kidnapping was tied to a mysterious disease that was spreading and connected to the discovery of an ancient artefact. The Warrior's Seal also gives the reader an insight into Tox before it all goes wrong for him, Tox as a leader and turn part of his team.
When Conspiracy of Silence begins, Tox has been dead for three years. He took the fall for their failed mission in exchange for wiping clear his men's records. But a threat targeting his family brings Tox out of hiding and back into another mission that mixes terrorism with deadly plagues and ancient artefacts. He needs his old team with him but three years and silence brought with it a lot of pain and confusion. Together with FBI agents, mission leaders and archaeologists Tzivia Khalon and Dr. Joseph Cathey, Tox and his team will have just days to piece together the mystery of the deadly plague and stop the people responsible.
We met Tzivia in The Warrior's Seal. She is an archaeologist and, as in The Warrior's Seal, is at the heart of first discovering the artefact tied to the disease and the mission to prevent the plague from spreading. But Tzivia is not the love interest in Conspiracy of Silence like I thought she would be after reading The Warrior's Seal. And I have to say I'm really glad about that, because a) Tox deserves someone more attuned to him and b) really, how many times can she dig up something deadly without wising up a little? You know, fool me once... But never mind because there is a much better character to enjoy.
The summary mentions an FBI agent who joins Tox and his men. That agent is Haven Kasey Cortes. A deception detector, Tox's childhood friend (?friend? he dated her sister, she crushed on him from afar), and staunch believer in Tox's innocence. She is the only one who calls him Cole rather than Tox, the only one who seems to think he is anything but toxic. When Tox discovers who Kasey really is it changes the way he approaches the mission - and maybe his life.
Conspiracy of Silence is just the start of the Tox Files series. And while there is a happy ending, there are plenty of loose threads that need to be tied up and, I'm sure, will be explored in subsequent books. It will be interesting to see how the series develops.
I enjoyed this book, mainly because of the strong characters and depth to their stories, while the mystery keeps things ticking along and the action makes it a fast-paced read.

She is an archaeologist and, as in The Warrior's Seal, is at the heart of first discovering the artefact tied to the disease and the mission to prevent the plague from spreading. But Tzivia is not the love interest in Conspiracy of Silence like I thought she would be after reading The Warrior's Seal. And I have to say I'm really glad about that, because a) Tox deserves someone more attuned to him and b) really, how many times can she dig up something deadly without wising up a little? You know, fool me once... But never mind because there is a much better character to enjoy.
The summary mentions an FBI agent who joins Tox and his men. That agent is Haven Kasey Cortes. A deception detector, Tox's childhood friend (?friend? he dated her sister, she crushed on him from afar), and staunch believer in Tox's innocence. She is the only one who calls him Cole rather than Tox, the only one who seems to think he is anything but toxic. When Tox discovers who Kasey really is it changes the way he approaches the mission - and maybe his life.
Conspiracy of Silence is just the start of the Tox Files series. And while there is a happy ending, there are plenty of loose threads that need to be tied up and, I'm sure, will be explored in subsequent books. It will be interesting to see how the series develops.
I enjoyed this book, mainly because of the strong characters and depth to their stories, while the mystery keeps things ticking along and the action makes it a fast-paced read.

Buckle up for this read because a) you’ll be touching down in seven different countries before all is said and done and b) there’s a whole lot of edge-of-your-seat action and suspense – with a bit of Indiana Jones tossed in just to keep things interesting. You won’t want to put down Conspiracy of Silence once you start it so make sure you’ve done as much as possible to achieve an interruption-free reading experience.
Kendig is the queen of fast-paced, nail-biting, authentic-feeling military/tactical action novels with fight scenes that leave you breathless and checking your own body for injuries after the dust settles. She also does a truly fantastic job of writing military characters – with realistic camaraderie, banter, stress, and reactions – while also keeping the language appropriate for a Christian-fiction-going audience. Her ability to convey team dynamics is quite simply superb. The romance is always deliciously lovely and full of great tension but it never strays into sappy.
In Conspiracy of Silence, Tox and his team of unique and intriguing characters race against a plague of Biblical proportions and fight against an organization that seems like something Harrison Ford and Sean Connery would have faced in The Last Crusade. Without giving anything away, one character in particular absolutely fascinates me and I am waiting eagerly to see what the rest of the series reveals about him. Not to mention all the questions surrounding this plague … Is it the same plague that wiped out several thousand Hebrews as recorded in the Bible? Is it just a reaction of modern air quality to ancient chemicals? And what about this possible fragment of the Aleppo Codex found with the artifacts?
For his own part, Tox is equally fascinating but for different reasons. A victim of tragic circumstances beyond his control, he takes a deal and disappears for several years. The reasons behind his return are compelling and layered and they add even more dimension to his character. His relationship with his team is complicated … his history with Kasey perhaps even more so … and his future is decidedly uncertain.
Bottom Line: If you’re a fan of Jason Bourne, Indiana Jones, or anything featuring a special forces unit, Conspiracy of Silence by Ronie Kendig belongs on your must-read list. The characters are vivid, each with their own story to tell, and the action scenes are riveting. The history, the theories, the mysterious Orders … all of these elements combine with everything I’ve already mentioned to make this a truly captivating novel.

I've never had a Ronie Kendig book take me so long to read! For starters, the barrage of characters introduced in the opening chapters was overwhelming, not to mention all the backstory thrown in. So I had to set this book aside for a few weeks until the prequel novella was released... which definitely helped! So definitely take a cue from this fan and save yourself the confusion -- read the novella first. There's your tip for the day. :-) But apart from that, I had a hard time visualizing a lot of the action in this story, and by the end the global chase was getting almost absurd in its random scope. Then, all of a sudden, everything wrapped up neatly in just a few pages. Not at all the kind of suspense or adrenaline rush I'm used to in an RK novel. An entertaining read that did keep me coming back for more, but somewhat anti-climactic and pale compared to Kendig's previous series.

Very good start to the series! I like how Ronie Kendig takes a old Bible story that doesn't get a lot of attention, and weaves this fantastic plot around it. Looking forward to read the rest!

THIS. BOOK. IS. EPIC! And the series is going to be even more epic! I have been a fan of Ronie Kendig’s novels since the first one I picked up (and I’ve devoured every one of them since) but she has really hit her stride with Conspiracy of Silence. I would go so far as to say she’s carved herself a unique niche in Christian fiction because, in all of my wiiiiide reading experience, I have not read another novel or series that combines the elements you will find here: Black ops military action, archaeology, medieval history, politics, bioterrorism, genuine Biblical history, a hint of the supernatural, and the inevitable tangle of human emotions that get caught up in the mix. And it’s all written in Ronie Kendig’s fantasic, high-impact, über-engaging style.
The prequel novella The Warrior’s Seal deals with the event that led to Tox becoming persona non grata to the United States. You’ll get the basic details as necessary in this novel, but for the full story I highly recommend reading The Warrior’s Seal first. In short, Tox got a raw deal, but he sucked it up and took one for the team. Literally. Now that he’s officially, if not actually dead, he’s the natural choice to lead a mission where expendability is high on the list of desirable characteristics.
A deliberately undiplomatic incident is what sets the ball rolling in this story, but it quickly leads Tox and his team to an archaeological dig headed by Tzivia Khalon and Dr Cathey (also from The Warrior’s Seal), which becomes the focus of the story. They believe they have found the site of the Israelite’s camp in Numbers 16, where Korah, Dathan, Abiram, and On accused Moses and Aaron of having set themselves (and the Levites) over the community as a priesthood.
The discovery of this site and its artefacts coincides with the onset of a deadly plague at the dig site; one that’s being dubbed ‘the New Black Death’. Is it a coincidence? Does it have a scientific explanation? Or has the plague that once took 14,700 Hebrew lives been unleashed again? Various members of the team have differing and strongly held beliefs on that topic! But the one thing they all agree on: They need to recover the artefacts, stolen by a centuries-old Order of fighters and assassins, and they need to prevent the plague from spreading.
Not only do you get adrenaline-laced, continent-hopping action, but there is a ton of interpersonal, and even some subtle romantic tension in the novel. (Forget the love triangle. This one's a diamond... sort of... if you look at it from the right angle!)
For starters, Tox will only take on this mission if he works with his former team. Two problems: (1) They all believe he’s dead; and (2) Tox is the reason they lost their careers. Secondly, Tox’s brother, Galen, is the President of the United States, but they’ve been estranged for years – even before Tox’s ‘death’. Let’s just say there’s a girl involved. And it’s complicated. But that doesn’t stop Galen’s advisors from playing dirty to get Tox back in the States.
And then there’s Kasey Cortes. She’s Galen’s sister-in-law, and she always had a soft spot for Tox when they were growing up. Okay - she was totally infatuated, and she’s invested a huge amount of her time and career in trying to prove Tox’s innocence. Now she’s a deception specialist with the FBI, and she’s about to find out that Tox isn’t dead after all. And Galen wants her to ascertain if Tox should be recommended for a pardon, because that’s the only carrot they have to dangle in front of him...
I could go on (boy, could I go on!) but you get the picture. No one does multi-layered tension like Ronie Kendig. And her combat scenes! They’ve always been good, but HOOAH! (I had to get that word in somewhere!) Only one caveat do I offer: You will be both satisfied, and yet totally craving the next in the series.
This is the series of the decade folks! Don't miss it!

I have read majority of Ronie Kendig's books, so I had a pretty good idea what I was in for when I picked up Conspiracy of Silence. I expected a strong hero who has a job or background in the military, strong heroine's, a setting that takes place in other countries, and a plot that moves at all times. With Conspiracy of Silence, I read all of these things and was pleasantly surprised with how much I really enjoyed this book.
First, the writing is strong and concise. Kendig does a great job at inviting me into the setting in a foreign country and allows me to experience a different culture than I have ever visited. I really enjoyed how she stays in one character's perspective at one time. She doesn't confuse me at all. I feel like I am invited into their internal struggles and allowed to empathize with each individual characters.
As for the characters, I really enjoyed getting to know and understand Tox. He is a strong hero who has military skills that make him shine on the page. He gripped me from the first moment I met him. Tox cares about family and would do anything to protect his niece. Even though he can kill a person with his physical skills, he is still a deeply caring person. First, with the hint of romance with Tzivia, than with a blast from the past romance with Haven. Don't worry! The romance is not the overarching story or takes away from the fast pace novel. It is a side note that deepens the characters.
The plot reminds me a lot of the Indiana Jones movies. It features a hunt for a Biblical artifact that has gone missing that could release a deadly plague on the world. It is fast pace, and Kendig does allow the characters and the readers alike to take breathers once in a while. Kendig's ability to incorporate her research about the Aleppo Code into the story without boring me was an amazing feet.
While the story is original, it isn't completely predictable, and I really can't wait to see what the next book in the series holds. There really isn't anything that I would shy away from. I believe teenagers would enjoy this book as much as any adult who loves adventures in their novels. Since the novel is a hunt for a Biblical artifact, there is a lot of mention of God, not preaching at the reader, but clues from the Bible to help Tox and his crew to solve the mystery. I believe fans of Kendig and Indiana Jones will devour this novel. I know I did.
With the hunt for a Biblical mystery, Ronie Kendig's Conspiracy of Silence invited me into a new world of intrigue with relatable characters to experience a world I have never encountered. I really can't wait for the next installment. Write faster, Ronie!

Ronie Kendig whips readers into a frenzied plot of historical legend, deadly mystery, and intense military action in Book One of The Tox Files. The pace slows just enough to allow you to breathe before the plot takes another adrenaline pumping twist driving you to push the pages as fast as you can handle. The collection of characters (just to name a few) include: a disenchanted archaeologist, a wizened professor, a loyal tactical team, deception expert, and a God-fearing Nigerian who wields a pair of kali sticks almost as fast as he wields spiritual truth to save a life. This story is about relationships as much as it is about the action-packed mission of saving the world. Ronie Kendig knows how to deliver deep characters who personify authenticity in their strengths and weakness. Each character singularly adds flavor to the story but as a whole the collective group is what brings these pages to life.
Ronie Kendig has a penchant for military themed novels but fans will be impressed with the historical theme in Conspiracy of Silence. This book is an intense, emotionally charged suspense that is hard to put down. Ronie Kendig is an amazing storyteller and Conspiracy of Silence is full of action and danger with the story based on biblical history, in particular surrounding the Hebrew people. Cole "Tox" Russell is back in action and brings his former special forces team together for a mission dealing with a mysterious illness that has the potential of infecting a huge part of the population. Team member Ram is of Jewish heritage and his expertise is of utmost importance. His sister Tzivia, an archaeologist, is working a dig in Saudi Arabia where the toxins of the illness is exposed. This story takes us on a wild adventure from one part of the world to another where the team members and associates are put in danger at every turn. Faith and a little romance is woven into this highly entertaining story.

I’m a sucker for suspenseful archeological novels and I love Kendig’s writing, so this new series is a real treat. After reading the novella WARRIOR’S SEAL, I had to get my hands on this novel ASAP. I recommend reading the novella first before starting CONSPIRACY OF SILENCE, because I think you’ll be missing some important details otherwise.

True to Ronie Kendig's standard of rapid-fire fiction, this was quite the military thriller ride over various of countries. From the first page to the last, there was a never ending action that was so descriptive, it felt like I was in a episode of Jason Bourne or similar. And I just love the banter Ronie Kendig always deliver between her macho heroes!
Apart from the suspense, there was also the struggles Tox had to deal with after returning from being dead for 3 years - not just with his team but also on a personal level. I loved the introduction of Haven and her part in Tox's life.
This series starts with the prequel
which you would need to read before reading this book and by the end of the book, there is still a lot of open cases which will continue in Book 2 which I will definitely be reading. I need answers to what will happen with Haven and Tox, where Tzivia fits into everything and if the president's adviser can be trusted.

This book was everything I hoped it'd be and more. Ronie Kendig is a MASTER of action scenes and intensity and this book is more proof of that!
The characters are so complex and real. I loved the relationships between Cole/Tox and his team, as well as the dynamics between all the different side characters. Speaking of side characters...there's a lot of major characters in this book but they're all so real and believable and so, so easy to root for and connect with. ALL THE LOVE.
This whole book kept me turning pages. The intriguing mix of spy/action and biblical/historical facts was so epic and gave the book a fresh tone from just the classic spy story. I loved it to pieces, and I'm still reeling from that climax. TOO. EPIC. *swoon*
Understandably, there's some violence in this story, but it's tasteful and not any more graphic than it needs to be.
I adored everything about this story and cannot wait to dive in to the next books in the series!! I'm in love! Definitely recommend to action lovers and just anyone who loves a good, epic story!

I adored everything about this story and cannot wait to dive in to the next books in the series!! I'm in love! Definitely recommend to action lovers and just anyone who loves a good, epic story!

Wow! This definitely had its exciting moments. It may sound weird to call a suspense book a comfort read, but this one could be. The suspense is like your typical movie style suspense with Biblical context and light faith content. I often went on between which character was my favorite. Overall, very nice!

Cole “Toxic” Russell lives up to his name. Everyone who gets close seems to invariably get poisoned by his existence. After a massive snafu involving a very high profile target – with personal connections – Tox and his team are courtmartialed and imprisoned. Yet he is given one last chance to save his team. One job, then they’re free and he can disappear.
Four years later Tox gets hunted down by the very government who abandoned him, and they want him back.

Oh, man, where do I even begin?
Tox is a great character. Deeply flawed, seriously hurting and angry, but with a great heart beneath. Kasey, our main female lead, was also a lot of fun. As an FBI deception expert, nobody could get anything past her, the human lie detector. I’m a bit jealous of her “superpower”. Wish I had it. Life would be so much easier....

Four years after a tragic mission decimated his career and his team, Cole “Tox” Russell is persona non grata to the United States. And that’s fine—he just wants to be left alone. But when a dormant, centuries-old disease is unleashed at an archaeological dig where three Bronze-era censers are found, Tox is lured back into action. Partnered with an archaeologist and an FBI agent who’s an expert in deception, Tox and his team are pitted against a secret society, a plague dubbed the New Black Death, and a revered codex—which may hold the key to stopping the deadly outbreak.
3.5 stars. This is the first book I have read by the author and I was intrigued with a story that had archaeology in the plot as that is what I studied in my undergrad. Anyway, so as you can see by the books description, basically a dormant, centuries-old disease is unleashed during an archaeological dig. I was slightly overwhelmed by the large number of characters that were introduced in the first few chapters. I am not a fan of this writing approach; I prefer authors introduce characters gradually if possible. If not, I find I have difficulty keeping them straight and I don't get as invested in their individual story if I keep getting confused about exactly who they are and what they are doing. I will say that the book itself was very interesting, as it mixed in things from several different genres including suspense/thriller, some information in regards to the history of Judaism and other aspects like the plague and the templar knights. When I first read the description, it reminded me a bit of the Da Vinci Code because of all the secret society and the codex.
Overall, I thought it was an interesting read and did find that the author did have good character development as the story went along. I have heard from other bloggers that reading the novella before reading this book helps with the overwhelming character introductions in the first few chapters, so I guess maybe check that out first before reading this book.
