Ours was a sin of passion, and in it, we both found purpose.
Pearl
I always knew that finding love would look different for me. How could it not, when I was raised by two women, both outcasts in our small town, one a witch and the other a scarlet-branded harlot? But even I never expected love to be this complicated.
Perhaps it was seeing how easily my mother loved in spite of the A on her chest. Somehow, I always imagined that once I found the right person, the rest would fall into place.
I never could have imagined that my mother's best friend, the town's prodigal priest, might be the right person.
Arthur
The Church is all I've ever really known. An orphan raised by nuns, becoming a priest was the only thing that made sense. Until I refused to end my friendship with Hester, and the Church sent me away to Denmark for fear of scarlet-lettered scandals.
After over a decade away, I jump at the chance to return home. In a small town closer to the monsters rumored to live in the surrounding forest than the nearest city, Hester's scandal will never be forgotten, but I don't expect anything to stand in the way of our friendship any longer.
From the moment I see Pearl, everything changes.
Fighting so hard to keep our love hidden in the shadows, we never expected to meet the monsters lurking there.

Cat Giraldo writes romance and fantasy, giving happily-ever-afters to characters who are painfully human, even when they aren’t human at all. She keeps vampire’s hours, writing characters far braver and more adventurous than she’ll ever be, long after her day job ends, much to her spoiled puppy’s irritation.
3.5 This was just as good as the the original and just as bad in many of the same ways. And not as in a bad story but as in how incredibly annoying it was. Writing wise the pace dipped a few two many times and lost my interest. But I was captivated during the romance and the smex. It was the in between that missed the mark a few time. As much as I want to rant and rave about my opinions on Heater, Pearl, Author and all the other players that’s not what this is for. The writing is beautiful and easy to read. The new element of the retelling was brilliant. And I enjoyed it very much.
This book was everything I wanted and more! It is a very kinky and very loose Scarlet Letter retelling, and honestly it’s perfect. It’s a taboo Priest/age-gap story and I was HOOKED early on! The smut is 🔥🥵 and omg the FEELS Cat made me FEEL!!! Such a good mixture of both plot and fun times🥵. This could be read as a standalone, but we do get to see so many familiar faces from book 1 of the series(which I LOVED), and it also really set me up to be so excited for more books in the series. I can not wait for Fortinbra’s book! 😍
I love Cat Giraldo's modern retellings of classics and then make it kink. For this one, though, I think there wasn't enough establishment of the relationship between Pearl and Arthur--it just started without any buildup, and it was hard to reconcile what their relationship was after that. Also felt that Arthur should have been more tormented throughout about his secrets and about his work.
