"I witnessed Vikas transform a mediocre presentation into a world championship-winning speech. He is a true master of his craft. Regardless of your experience, this book will help you become a better communicator, both on and off the stage." --Stephen Shapiro, author of Best Practices Are Stupid ""Emote" approaches verbal communications from a very human perspective. It will help you improve verbally, whether public speaking or in one-on-one conversations." --Nancy Duarte, author of Resonate "Vikas' workshop on public speaking, which is based on his book "Emote," has consistently received stellar ratings by our students. Many have said that it changed their perspective on public speaking." --Tracy Purinton, associate director, MIT Leadership Center, MIT Sloan School of Management Many people fear public speaking more than death. Most wish they could do it better, or at least avoid the sweating, stuttering jitters that plague them before any presentation or speech. Vikas Jhingran has been there. He was so poor at speaking in public that his supervisor wouldn't let him make presentations to clients--even when he had done all the work. Surprisingly, few professional speakers and presenters understand speeches or presentations at a fundamental level. Their overly prescriptive approach actually ends up confusing the speech and the tools that are used to deliver it, instead of connecting with the essential part of speaking--that which engages listeners with the message and the emotions that go with it. By focusing on the most important aspect of communication--the transfer of emotion--"Emote" Develops an emotion-driven approach that will help you deliver a powerful, effective message despite any perceived handicaps. Encourages introverts and non-native speakers to find their voices and deliver impactful speeches. Clarifies the roles of common speaking tools and shows how to use them effectively. In "Emote," Vikas presents an emotion-based approach that will change the way you think about verbal communications. Emote will help you gain the confidence you need to stand in the spotlight and "wow" clients or executives, create connections, and get your message across to anyone.
What I really liked about the book is how it intensely focused on the fundamentals of speech making. This really made me understand the difference between what a speech is and the tools for a speech. This is something which many others have not done
Found this in a used bookstore and picked it up on a whim and it’s actually really good. I’m sure it’s intended for business purposes, however I’m going to use it for my teaching career. I try not to give too many books 5 stars but honestly when you’re teaching a subject that it’s hard to get kids to care about this is SUCH a good way to get them to care. I really loved this book. 4.5 stars
Excellent book!! Teetering on a 4 1/2 to 5 stars. I've been on the search for books on many non-fiction topics like this one for a long time and I'm grateful to have been given the chance to read it. I'm not at all afraid of public speaking, however this covers so much that it can be applied to your personal circumstances which is exactly what I was in much need of. Writing about my circumstances and feelings through poetry or journal entries comes easy for me, however getting my true point across in different situations is a challenge and this is one book I'll refer to often. It emotional at times when the Author speaks of 9/11 and it is forever true what the Author says in the beginning chapter.... "I remember it like it was yesterday". Especially as I type this on the anniversary of the tragic day.
Thank you to Goodreads, Career Press and the Author for the opportunity to read this book for an honest review. Honest is what you'll always get from me regardless of how I've received a book and in this case it was through the GR's First Reads program. More to add to this asap and I'll remove all the posts below as soon as I get to writing up a more detailed/better review which this book and the author certainly deserve.
Update to my update: I have recieved the copy of "Emote" today, September 2, 2014. Thank you very much to the Author for sending a copy out to replace the missing one. Very much appreciated :) I've been looking forward to reading this and Congratulations on the "2007 Champion of Public Speaking Award".
--------------------------------------------------------------------------- Update: I got a message from the Author the day after I posted my comments below and the rating regarding my not having received the book. A very quick and friendly reply to resolve the issue. Unfortunately sometimes these things happen and it's not the end of the world, however I've been anxiously waiting to read this so as soon as it arrives I'll take down the current rating and this book will immediately go onto my "currently reading" shelf. Many thanks to the author for contacting me :) I look forward to the read very much!! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is hard for me to do because I've been 'really' excited to have won this book through the Goodreads First reads program, however as one other book I never recieved a long time back I was told to one star the book and Mark it as read. I really really hoped to read this and appreciate the fact that I did win it, unfortunately I can't read it because it never arrived :( but thank you Goodreads for the opportunity. I'm still hoping it will arrive because I do believe it will help many circumstances in my world tremendously. So a one star for now and hopes it does arrive. Thank you again and Happy Reading everyone :)
This is a book for storytellers, hypnotists, and presenters of all types. How the author breaks down communication is not through opinion but through a cross cultural perspective focused by research. There is a great bibliography in the back of the book that students will find very useful.
More important I found that the author broke down the important elements for poets, writers, business presenters (including power point presentations), writers, and other performing artists. As a teacher, trainer, and storyteller I found this book to be an enjoyable and easy read that made me think about myself and the style I put into my work. Reading this book, I feel I won't be able to help myself using what I learned, and just as important, being able to distinguish these important elements in other presenters. This was a good read.
I won this book in a FirstReads giveaway, thank you thank you!!
Don't let the title deceive you. This book is so much more than the title lets on.
As a person who has conducted hundreds of public speeches, I can tell you that this book was able to provide me with information and practical skills that I didn't have before hand.
The information/skills are delivered in a very hands and simple approach. This isn't an author who writes just to fill pages, I guarantee you will find it all useful in the most practical of ways.
This book is easy to read and contains lots of helpful advice on effectively communicating with others not contained in other public speaking manuals. The book itself is an illustration of the author's recommended techniques. He explains how making your message relate to your personal emotions causes it to be more easily received. I especially liked that the book addresses the additional challenges of introverts and of speakers from cultures different than those of their audiences. Reading this was very quick, pleasant and informative. I received the book through the FirstReads program.
I was very lucky to win a copy of this book. I have to say that the ideas in this book have definitely changed how I view communication / public speaking. The author wrote this in a very easy to read and understandable format for the average person. If you will be or may be doing Public Speaking this is a MUST READ! I will be adding this book to my staff library at work. Thanks again for a great book Vikas Gopal Jhingran.
This book is a must read for everyone. Although it is to help people improve their verbal communication skills and improve their presentations...the book gives valuable tips on how to connect with people...how to make our messages memorable, how to bond emotionally with the audience...and I feel the writer has done a fantastic job. I strongly recommend this book to everyone.
I'm sure that all in all, this was a good book, but it's just not something I particularly care to read about. Speaking for others isn't really an issue I'll be coming up against any time soon. I appreciate the author sending this book out, but it just wasn't right for me.
Clear, simple, and entertaining - Vikas gives us all a way to connect with our audience in a manner that resonates and is memorable. Any leader needs this skill and this book is a fabulous way to learn how to build it.
