The Ivory Child
While Quartermain visits Lord Randall, two foreigners come asking for Macumazana -- that is, asking for Allan Quartermain by the name he used among the Africans. The two visitors are Harut and Marut, priests and doctors of the White Kendah People and they have come to ask Allan Quartermain for his help. The White Kendah people are at war with the Black Kendah people who have an evil spirit for a god. And that spirit of the god resides in the largest elephant they have ever seen, an elephant that no man can kill -- save Allan Quartermain. And now our intrepid hero must return to Africa and destroy this evil spirit before it kills every one of the White Kendah People.

হেনরি রাইডার হ্যাগার্ডের অন্যান্য বইয়ের মতই এই বইটাও অসম্ভব ভালো লাগলো। সাইফুল আরেফিন অপুর অনুবাদের ক্রেডিটও কম নয়, অনুবাদ দুর্দান্ত ছিলো। কালো কেন্দা আর সাদা কেন্দার কাল্পনিক ঐতিহাসিক ঘটনা প্রবাহ নিয়ে বইটা। অ্যালান মূল চরিত্র হলেও হ্যান্সের জন্য বেশ মন খারাপ লেগেছে, পুরো বইটাতে হ্যান্সের প্রভাব ছিলো অনেক। বইটাতে পুরো অভিযান বেশ উপভোগ্য ছিলো। আবারো, হ্যাগার্ডের না পড়া বইগুলো পড়ার অপেক্ষায়...

সেই অ্যালান, সেই আফ্রিকা, সেই কোনো দুর্গম অঞ্চলের উপজাতি। হ্যাগার্ডের চিরচেনা ছকে লেখা এই কাহিনি কেবল মনে রাখা যায় হ্যান্সের জন্যে। সেই বুড়ো ডাচভাষী হটেনটট, জুলু মাভোভো যার নাম দিয়েছিলো অন্ধকারের আলো, অগণিতবার বুদ্ধির জোরে অসম্ভবকে যে সম্ভব করে তুলেছে কোয়ার্টারমেইনের জন্যে- জানি কল্পিত এক চরিত্র সে, তবু- তার প্রয়াণে কোথাও খারাপ লাগলো বড়।

As a kid, I was obsessed with RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK. As far as the action/adventure genre is concerned, it's in a league all its own.
THE IVORY CHILD isn't a movie, but it's got that RAIDERS spark. I've always heard that Allan Quatermain was an influence on George Lucas when he created Indiana Jones, and it wouldn't surprise me if this book in particular had the biggest impact. Heck, it even features a character who's scared to death of snakes.
Like RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, THE IVORY CHILD is a perfect blend of action, setting, plot, characters, and great storytelling. All that's missing is the John Williams soundtrack. Like Indy, Allan Quatermain is a grounded and all-together human sort of hero (I'll never forget the shooting match that comprises the first two chapters), and this adventure is sprinkled with just the right amount of mysticism to set an exotic mood without ever being cheesy.
Forget those who quibble over the book's lack of political correctness. Just enjoy yourself and go along for the ride.

This is another of the 14 Allan Quatermain tales from the pen of that great adventure fantasist, H. Rider Haggard. This novel is a direct continuation of "Allan and the Holy Flower," and it does help to have read the previous book. Also referenced are other Quatermain novels such as "Marie," "Child of Storm" and "Allan's Wife," and while a knowledge of these earlier books will make for a richer experience, "Ivory Child" can certainly be read on its own. In this one, Quatermain goes on a quest to find his buddy's kidnapped wife (in that respect, it is similar to "Holy Flower"), but also gets involved in a lost tribe's civil war. Thrown into the mix are a gigantic and evil elephant god, a monster snake guardian (the possible inspiration for all those snake gods in Robert E. Howard's Conan tales), several great battle scenes, psychic visions, drug use, a hailstorm, Egyptology, a shooting competition, a sandstorm, etc. Haggard throws quite a bit into this one to ensure a good time. And for fans of Hans, Quatermain's heroic and amusing Hottentot sidekick, this one provides quite a little tearjerker ending. It's all wonderfully pulpy and quite amusing; a ripping good yarn, as they used to say. So seek this one out here; it will reward your efforts!

হ্যাগার্ডের অন্যান্য উপন্যাসের মতই কাহিনী বর্ণিত হয়েছে প্রথম পুরুষে, অ্যালান কোয়াটারমেইনের জবানিতে। কাহিনী নিয়ে নতুন করে বলার কিছু নেই। ভালোবাসা, আত্নত্যাগ আর বন্ধুত্বের অপূর্ব মিশ্রণে বইটি এ লেখকের অন্যতম সেরা। পড়া শেষে মন খারাপ হয়ে যাবে; সাথে ঘিরে থাকবে একধরনের অপূর্ণ ভাললাগা। অনুবাদ নিয়ে কিছু কথা বলা যাক। প্রথমেই যা বলতে হয়, অনুবাদকের সাবলীল শব্দচয়ন আমাকে মুগ্ধ করেছে। তার লেখার ভঙ্গি ভিন্নমাত্রা যোগ করেছে পুরো লেখাটিতেই। বাংলা ভাষাভাষীদের ভাল লাগবে এমন করেই লেখা। এখানে উল্লেখ করা প্রয়োজন যে এটি সংক্ষেপিত অনুবাদ। আরেকটু ডিটেইল্ড হতে পারত, বিশেষ করে পারিপার্শ্বিকের বর্ণনাগুলো। কিন্তু মূল বই পুরোটা পড়িনি বলে এক্ষেত্রে আসলেই কতটুকু বর্ণনা ছিল জানিনা। এছাড়া কিছু ব্যাপার লক্ষণীয়। যেমন কিছু জায়গায় ইংরেজি শব্দের ব্যবহার, যেখানে বাংলা ব্যবহার করলেই ভাল শোনাত আমার ধারণা। যদিও অনেক জায়গায় আবার ইংরেজি শব্দ ব্যবহারকেই যথাযুক্ত মনে হয়েছে। এছাড়া প্রকাশনির প্রুফ রিডিং-এ কিছু ভুল ছাড়া আমার এ অনুবাদে খারাপ লাগার কিছু চোখে পড়েনি। নিশ্চিতভাবেই সময় কাটানোর জন্য চমৎকার একটি বই।
আর যার কথা বিশেষ করে বলতে হয় তা হচ্ছে বইটির প্রচ্ছদ। ছবিতে যতটা না, বাস্তবে তার চেয়ে সুন্দর দেখায়। প্রচ্ছদ দেখেই এ বইয়ের প্রতি প্রথম আকর্ষণটা জেগেছিল। উল্লেখযোগ্য, প্রচ্ছদ লেখক নিজেই করেছেন।
আর যার কথা বিশেষ করে বলতে হয় তা হচ্ছে বইটির প্রচ্ছদ। ছবিতে যতটা না, বাস্তবে তার চেয়ে সুন্দর দেখায়। প্রচ্ছদ দেখেই এ বইয়ের প্রতি প্রথম আকর্ষণটা জেগেছিল। উল্লেখযোগ্য, প্রচ্ছদ লেখক নিজেই করেছেন।

When I take all the H. Rider Haggard books that I have read, The Ivory child stands out to me as one that almost unseats Allan Quatermain as my favorite of his works. The Ivory child was an amazingly told story about two ancient religions and their symbols fighting each other and Allan was only there with a friend to try and save the man's wife.
It had everything you had come to expect from a Haggard novel, but this book had even more including references to previous books of him, and they came together in a beautiful finale.
As with many of Haggard's books, there can be a lot of monologuing, but I found it sparse and easy to get through in this novel. It is especially fun if you have already read Allan and the Holy Flower as there are discussions and re-occurring characters from that story.
I am giving this book five stars because I feel that it is a five-star book and I look forward to reliving that adventure again one day.

Another compelling and (always) well-written story by H. Rider Haggard! This is another story following the adventures of Allan Quatermain and his cohorts. I love that his books are clean, yet adventurous, interesting, with relatable, heroic, yet believable characters, and that they are filled with just good, plain storytelling. I also love how Haggard interweaves his characters into different novels, so the relationships continue and mature, as in real life. THE IVORY CHILD takes the reader from England to the wilds of Africa, engaging him or her in the tragedies and triumphs of Lord and Lady Ragnall, as well as Quatermain and his devoted servant Hans. Great story!

Best considered as a continuation of The Holy Flower, Haggard's The Ivory Child reintroduces several of the same characters, albeit some only briefly, and also retraces some of the journeys Quatermain undertook in that earlier novel. A difference does exist in emphasis, if not in the plot itself. That is, Haggard pushes the elements of fantasy and mysticism far beyond what was depicted in The Holy Flower. The story itself is yet another good one. And once more, Haggard seems to make use of James G. Frazer's observations regarding cultural anthropology and religious rites.

I really liked it, mostly because I've read King Solomon's Mines many times in my youth, but now I'm working my way through the many adventures of Allan. This was a rich experience for me. Many readers downgrade the Haggard's books based on the racial attitude of the time that he wrote. I read his books as more of a travelogue. I love the descriptions of the time and the terrain. I miss Africa and this brings a little piece of home to me.

I'm still not a fan of the african adventure story but this is certainly better than most. A lot of different aspects to it, its got some humor, its fairly dark in places, some romance, lot of magic as well as the usual war scenes. It's good for its type.

More of the same. Also, Haggard seems like he really resisted editing. The number of times his first person narrator said something like "and, as I had forgotten to say earlier, I only had 10 bullets with me" is just plain embarrassing.

দুর্দান্ত অ্যাডভেঞ্চার, অ্যালান কোয়াটারমেইনের সেরাগুলোর একটা! অনুবাদ আরো ভালো হতে পারতো, সেবার অন্য অনুবাদগুলোর মত মান ধরে রাখতে পারে নি, তবে তারপরেও অন্য যেকোনো প্রকাশনীর থেকে ভালো।

তাদুকি অ্যাডভেঞ্চারের যে নেশাটা 'নেশা'য় ছিল, সেটা পেলাম না। সেই অ্যাডভেঞ্চারের আশায় পড়েছিলাম বলেই হয়তো ঠিক টানল না।

হেনরি রাইডার সাহেবের বইগুলো সব সময়েই একটা আলাদা ধরণের অনুভূতি দেয়, নিয়ে যায় ভিন্ন এক কাল্পনিক ঐতিহাসিক জগতে।

А был ли слон? Определённо слон был, но был ли он в прежней книге о похождениях Аллана Квотермейна? Легко запутаться, особенно учитывая случившийся в творчестве Хаггарда кризис. Завязка очередной книги построена по тому же принципу, но на этот раз не на просторах Африки, а где-то в тихом уголке Англии, куда отправился главный герой цикла, чтобы пострелять с друзьями фазанов. Читатель привык ожидать раскрытия повествования, покуда Райдер не удовлетворит собственный интерес к охотничьему ремеслу, тем более к такому, до какого он ещё не нисходил. Охотиться на птицу, причём без угрозы для жизни стрелка – весьма необычное обстоятельство. Тем не менее, охотиться на фазанов накладно – требуется значительная сумма, ибо всякая работа должна быть оплачена. Собирать фазанов не просто, считать их ещё труднее, а самое сложное – определить, чья пуля сразила птицу. Что же, разобравшись с особенностями стрельбы по обитающим на Туманном Альбионе созданиям, Райдер оказался готов поведать историю про путешествие за древним артефактом, представляющим интерес для узкого круга лиц.

গল্পের নায়ক যেখানে কোয়াটারমেইন, সেখানে বইটা লুফে নিতে কারো দেরি হবার কথা না, অন্ততো যারা কোয়াটারমেইনের ভক্ত। বইটা পড়ে ফেলেছি অনেকদিন আগেই কিন্তু এখন একটা রিভিউ লেখার লোভ সামলাতে পারছি না কিছুতেই।
হোলি ফ্লাওয়ার (অ্যালান অ্যান্ড দ্য হোলি ফ্লাওয়ার— যারা পড়েননি, আজকেই কিনে ফেলবেন। এমন অ্যাডভেঞ্চার আর থ্রিল, বিশ্বসাহিত্যে বিরল) অভিযান থেকে ফিরে ইংল্যান্ডে বেশ কিছুদিন অবস্থান করেন কোয়াটারমেইন। সেখানে স্ক্রুপের মাধ্যমে পরিচিত হন লর্ড রেগ্ন্যাল নামের এক বিশাল ধনকুবেরের সাথে। যার সাথে এই অভিযানে বের হন কোয়াটারমেইন।
এবারের অভিযানটা ছিল কুখ্যাত পঙ্গদের এলাকা থেকে অনেক উত্তরের এক দেশ কেন্দাল্যান্ডে। বিশাল মরুভূমির পাড়ে বাস করে দুই উপজাতি— সাদা আর কালো কেন্দা। আজন্ম ওরা পরস্পরের শক্রু।
সাদা কেন্দাদের শিশু দেবতা ওরাকল বেঁচে নেই। কিন্তু সে মারা যাওয়ার আগে বলে গিয়েছে, নতুন ওরাকলকে পাওয়া যাবে ইংল্যান্ডে। এরপর মিশর থেকে তুলে নেয়া হল সেই ওরাকল, লেডি রেগ্ন্যালকে। তাকে খুঁজতে কোয়াটারমেইনের সাথে যাদুর দেশে চলল লর্ড রেগ্ন্যাল।

জীবনে অসংখ্যবার নিজের জীবন বাজি রেখে নিশ্চিত মৃত্যুর হাত থেকে বাস কোয়াটারমেইনকে বাঁচিয়েছে ভৃত্য ও সব সময়কার বন্ধু হটেনটট হ্যান্স। এই অভিযানেও দু’দুবার কোয়াটারমেইনের জীবন বাঁচিয়েছে হ্যান্স কিন্তু শেষবার নিজের জীবন দিয়ে কোয়াটারমেইনকে বাঁচাতে হলো! 🥹

হ্যাগার্ডের বেশিরভাগ বইয়ের মতই এটা আরেকটা আফ্রিকান অ্যাডভেন্চার। দুর্ধর্ষ শিকারী অ্যালান কোয়াটারমেইনের আরেকটা কাহিনী। আমার কাছে হ্যাগার্ডের চরিত্রগুলোর মধ্যে নি:সন্দেহে সবচেয়ে প্রিয় হ্যান্স, এমনকি অ্যালানের চেয়েও। সহজ সরল এক হলুদ হটেনটট, ‘বাস’-এর চেয়ে প্রিয় যার এজীবনে কিছুই নেই। ভীষণ অকৃত্রিম একজন মানুষ সে। কঠিন সময়গুলোতে হ্যান্সের কথাবার্তা সবসময়ই একটা রিলিফের মত। এই বইটা আমার কাছে বেশি স্পেশাল হওয়া কারণ হল হ্যান্স। (স্পয়লার) দানব হাতি জেনার হাত থেকে তার বাসকে বাঁচাতে গিয়ে জেনার হাতেই সে নিহত হয়। মৃত্যুর মুহুর্তটাতেও তার সরল চিন্তা আসলেই হৃদয় স্পর্শ করার মত। হৃদয়ের এত বড় একটা অংশ কেন্দাল্যান্ডে ফেলে এসে অ্যালান বাঁচবে কি করে? নাকি কল্পনায় হ্যান্স সবসময় তার পাশে থাকবে?

Number 8 in the series, Allan must return to Africa to kill a spirit that is in the largest Elephant every known. The people are being killed by this spirit inhabited animal. So, he returns to the Dark Continent and starts to find this animal.
This is a fun story but remember that the character of Allan is a hunter. Today, we frown upon this type of big game hunting. If you read this knowing that it was written a long time ago, you will enjoy the story.

All begins with his visit to a friend in England, where he is introduced to Lord Ragnall and his future wife. During an elegant dinner with them all the party receive an unexpected visit from two Arab-looking foreigners who introduce themselves as magicians. They foretell to Allan that he will come to their hidden country somewhere in Africa and that they need him to kill their enemy´s god, a terrific elephant called Jana.

For many of us who grew up on a diet of Rider Haggard, every new reading of an old favourite is a fresh delight. Modern readers object to him on account of the racism, paternalism or imperialism evident in every line of his works, but that was as much part of his culture as it is in ours to be revolted by such ugly sentiments. While not his best, 'The Ivory Child' certainly has its fill of action, danger, mystery and superstition.

হেনরি রাইডার এর আরেক অন্যন্য এবং মন মুগ্ধকর অ্যালান কোয়াটরমেইন এর আরেকটি অভিযানের গল্প এটি। যা আসলেই অনেক ভাল লেগেছে। ভালবাসা আত্মত্যাগ, বন্ধুত্ব, ফ্যান্টাসি, অ্যাডভেঞ্জারের স্বাধ পেয়েছি বইটিতে। পড়া শেষে মন খারাপ করা ভাল এক উপন্যাস। আর গল্প বর্ণনা আর অনুবাদ ছিল ঝরঝরে এবং মনোমুগ্ধকর। চাইলে বইটি পড়তে পারেন।

In The Ivory Child the author goes more into the occult part and magics. These things were present in the previous books too, but in this one it is almost on every page(an exaggeration).
But in my eyes it makes the story even better. Once again there is drama, adventure and action everything the reader requires =)

I am enjoying this series of books by Haggard. I will say that I do not always agree with the language used, but, I like the stories and I shall be reading more of the series.

H. Rider Haggard has to be one of my favorite writers, I read any that catch my attention.

I've been steadily working through the Quatermain books in their written order and this is by far the most mystical one yet. The tie-in with the previous 'flower' book should not preclude jumping straight into this one if you're keen
Quatermain plays the role of the perplexed protagonist in an even more retiring frame than usual. In many ways he's the hapless observer in this adventure, rarely taking a lead role. His dry summaries of extraordinary events work well as part of his 'reserved english man' personae and add a nice touch of humour.
To me it's the most 'adventurous' of his tales since the 'mines and the first where Hunter' takes up the personae put forwards by Alan Moore in his League' series.
Great reading, sustained interest and exotic happenings. 'Looking forwards to some more smoke induced visions and happenings in the next one on my list; The Ancient Allan.

অ্যালান অ্যান্ড দ্যা হোলি ফ্লাওয়ার বইয়ের অভিযানের কিছুদিন পরের কাহিনীই এটা। হ্যাগার্ডের পুরনো লিখনশৈলী খুঁজে পাওয়া যায় বইটাতে। মাইলের পর মাইল প্রতিকূল পরিবেশ টিকে থাকা, শিকারের সন্ধান, ভাগ্যের সহায়তায় বার বার বেঁচে যাওয়া, জংলিদের বোকা বানানো, মহাপ্রয়োজনের সময় গুলি মিস করা, জংলিদের অতিপ্রাকৃতিক উপাস্য বস্তুর সাথে এনকাউন্টার, স্মৃতিচারণ, মামিনা-স্টেলা-মেরিত্রয়ীর ক্যামিও, হ্যান্সের দুষ্টুমি, যুদ্ধ এবং শত্রুর চেয়ে অনেক কম সৈন্য নিয়েও যুদ্ধে জেতা; গতানুগতিক হ্যাগার্ডিয় অনেক কিছুই ছিল বইটাতে। বইটা আবার এক হিসেবে কাজ করেছে 'নেশা' বইটার প্রিকুয়েল হিসেবেও। টুইস্ট ছিল না সেইরকম কোন। 'শী' অথবা হোলি ফ্লাওয়ারের মত চমৎকার কোন অতিপ্রাকৃতিক কোন কনসেপ্টও ছিল না। তবে একটি মাত্র প্রিয় চরিত্রের মৃত্যু বইটাকে অ্যালানপ্রেমীদের কাছে অবশ্যপাঠ্য করে তুলেছে। শুধুমাত্র একটি অসাধারণ আত্মত্যাগের সাক্ষী হওয়ার জন্য হলেও হ্যাগার্ডপ্রেমীদের এই বইটি পড়া উচিত মনে করি।
