When the wagon pulled by a runaway team during a violent storm tossed John Butler off and onto a large rock, life changed for the blond-haired son of a gold hungry man heading for the California Gold Rush. A member of a Hopi hunting party rescued him, took him back to his mesa and raised him as part of his family. John Butler becomes Quiet Water and earns the respect of the elders and his peers. The elders send him on a journey with a United States Cavalry troop to scout for them in their quest to establish a fort along the trail to California.
He discovers the officer in charge speaks with forked tongue, so he escapes and hurries back to the Hopi village on the mesa. He reports his findings to the elders. The gold-hungry father, now a wealthy rancher in California, learns about his son s location from the officer, and travels to Hopi-land to take his son back to the California ranch. Quiet Water disappoints his father with his decision to remain with his Hopi friends and his new bride. This story tells about sound decision making and the successful blending of people
