Meet Kobato Hanato, a sweet and rather simple young girl on a quest to have her single, dearest wish granted. But first, she must learn the ways of the world from Ioryogi-san, a gruff blue dog whose bark is just as bad as his bite! Under his "tutelage" (read: constant verbal abuse), Kobato puts her efforts into passing various trials of common sense so that she may obtain the key to getting her wish-a magic bottle which must be filled with the suffering of wounded hearts that Kobato herself has healed. But with Kobato's common sense sorely lacking, she keeps flunking Ioryogi-san's trials left and right! It looks like the road that lies ahead of Kobato will be a long one indeed!
CLAMP originally began in 1989 as a twelve-member dōjinshi circle, but by 1990, the circle had diminished from twelve to seven. Of the remaining seven, Tamayo Akiyama, Sei Nanao, and Leeza Sei left the group during the production of the RG Veda manga. Other former members of CLAMP also included Soushi Hishika, O-Kyon, Kazue Nakamori, Yuzuru Inoue and Shinya Ōmi. Currently, there are four members in the group.
In 2004, CLAMP's 15th anniversary as a mangaka group, the members changed their names from Nanase Ohkawa, Mokona Apapa, Mick Nekoi, and Satsuki Igarashi to Ageha Ohkawa, Mokona, Tsubaki Nekoi and Satsuki Igarashi (her name is pronounced the same, but written with different characters) respectively. The August 2004 issue of Newtype USA, a magazine specializing in events of the anime and manga subcultures, reported that the members of CLAMP simply wanted to try out new names. In a later interview with Ohkawa, it was revealed that initially Mokona wanted to drop her surname because it sounded too immature for her liking, while Nekoi disliked people commenting that her name was the same as Mick Jagger's. Ohkawa and Igarashi, wanting to go with the flow of Nekoi's and Mokona's name changes, changed their names as well.
In 2006, they made their first USA public debut at Anime Expo in Anaheim, California. They were well received at the convention, with 6,000 fans in attendance at their panel.
Oh CLAMP, how the mighty hath fallen. The only thing going for this title is the group's name on the cover; it certainly has no other appeal.
The title character, Kobato, has arrived in Japan apparently from somewhere that is not earth with only a wish and a tutor/guardian, the stuffed animal named Ioryogi. To obtain her wish, Kobato must fill a magic bottle with the suffering of others (i.e. she must help others), but first she has to prove she has common sense to live in Japan.
Alas, she has none.
The entire volume is just a "cute dumb girl doing cute dumb things." Every "test" takes place at some holiday or seasonal event--Christmas, New Years, Valentine's Day--and despite the supposed lapse of time between events, Kobato does absolutely nothing. As the reader, I am forced to assume the homeless girl hibernates, since that's the only way she could so completely miss learning anything in the months that elapse.
There's nothing to keep you coming back. Kobato is a one-dimensional character in the traditional cute-dumb-girl vein (who has a SECRET and probably SAD PAST, OH NO), and Ioryogi has a temper that is permanently stuck on mad and abusive. What drivel is this?
Kobato has a wish. To have her wish granted, she needs to heal wounded hearts - unfortunately, she doesn't know all that much about the world around her. With the help of Ioryogi - a soft toy dog - Kobato goes on a mission to better understand how the world and the people in it work and always hoping she might heal someone.
Firstly, Kobato is adorable. I absolutely love her design and all her outfits - I'd read this series just for that! But she's also got a very loveable personality. Granted, naive and ditzy characters can get on my nerves, but Kobato is written well; she's such a ray of sunshine and her cluelessness is explained by the plot.
In general, Kobato. is a sweet and fluffy series, there's really very little evil in it - even the villains aren't exactly bad guys. It was a little hard to get into at with how episodic it was; Kobato stumbled from one scenario into the next of trying to understand the world - by that I mean things like how to behave on Christmas or Valentine's Day. Once Kobato ends up as an assistant in a nursery, the plot gains substance and direction.
Although this series can be read by itself, I think those familiar with other CLAMP works can appreciate it more; there are many cameos of other CLAMP figures, in fact, a lot more than any other CLAMP work (Tsubasa not included as that one brings together almost all works). Some of the cameos are very brief but there's just something very satisfying seeing all these characters. Knowing these characters' stories definitely makes their part in Kobato. more meaningful.
The art, of course, is beautiful - I'm tempted to say this is actually one of my favourites among CLAMP's styles. That being said, it does use the long-limbed proportions which were quite prominent in Tsubasa. These unnaturally long limbs never sat quite right with me, so it's actually saying something that I would still consider this one of my favourite styles despite the odd proportions.
Kobato. is a light and endearing read. It's nothing mindblowing, but it doesn't need to be. I'd dearly recommend it to people who generally like CLAMP and their characters, but it can be a nice little read for newcomers as well.
"But as you come across more people from now on, I think you may find your wish changing a bit."
I was really really excited to read this, but once I started reading, I just couldn't seem to be as excited as I was when started. I LOVE the art as it's gorgeous and think Kobato is SO cute, but Ioryogi is absolutely awful.
I thought I wouldn't mind having a sweet character with a very mean/tsundere(??) character, but this story did not deliver on that trope in the way I was expecting because Ioryogi is just plain mean. He hardly EVER has anything nice to say about Kobato, and when he does it's only because she gave him an opportunity to have booze/sake. I felt I was mentally done with this manga when she is being tested on cherry blossoming parties and a bunch of drunks come to her and he's like, "Well that is part of these, so I'm just going to leave her there, and get some booze for myself." WHAT?!
Someone can kindly correct me wrong, but I'm pretty sure Kobato is around 13 or so and is NOT that old that it should be acceptable for her to stay with those people where she has NO idea who they are or what they are like. I feel like even later when harm could have been done to her, Ioryogi doesn't really do anything. But let her do something he considers dumb, and he'll blow a giant fireball at her. So frustrating!
While Kobato doesn't have a lot of "common sense" and everything she knows is from TV/books she read at the store, I don't actually think she is a dumb character. Ditzy, sure. Stupid, no. I admire her sincerity to always try and genuinely wish that could have been recognized A LOT more often because about halfway through the volume I didn't find it enjoyable to see her berated so much, which is a bummer because she is such a bright heroine.
The art is stunning and thought it fun that I actually recognized a Chobits reference despite having not read the manga/seen the anime!
Despite that I have the whole series checked out from my library, I'm going to stop with this volume. I loved the developments happening concerning Kobato's dream in the sense she is meeting and helping other people, but Ioryogi really is a killjoy for me in enjoying this series more.
Hopefully, Kobato will one day be free of him and can fulfill her dream (though I LOVE that quote I shared at the beginning of this review because I think it's a great and awesome foreshadowing…at least hopefully!)!
It was high time to re-read this cute and at times heartbreaking manga again. I just love the Kobato series, love seeing Kobato (not always a fan of Ioryogi-san), seeing various other CLAMP characters make an appearance (xxxHolic, Chobits, Wish, etc.). I love seeing Kobato's wish and see her work hard (and often fail as she just hasn't got a clue about life and gets most from what she reads in books or seen on the TV screen in a store). Since it has been years since I last read this one I haven't got a clue on what is going on with Kobato, so I am starting to rediscover things again. So far we learned that her hat may never be taken off, Ioryogi meets an old acquaintance. I do think it was hilarious that apparently Kobato got a whole closet of pretty and fancy clothes yet lived in the park until much further in the story. I get that she has to pass a test, but this just ridiculous. The art is just absolutely gorgeous and I would love to get my hands on all the pretty clothes that Kobato is wearing. Will be re-reading book 2 soon.
Mmm, I'm not sure what to think about this first volume 🤔 CLAMP's art is as beautiful as always, and Kobato's really cute, but I'm no sure I'm intrigued enough by the story to go on with the series. It started a bit abruptly and I don't think I care enough about what's going to happen, even though there's some mystery involved. I loved seeing the characters from Chobits pop up though, as it is one of my favourite mangas of all time 💖
Kobato is a young-looking girl of indeterminate origin who has a wish to visit a place. In order to do so, she is set to a number of tasks by her mentor, a crotchety, verbally abusive, alcoholic magical stuffed dog named Ioryogi and scored on her performance and ability to use "common sense." Hijinks ensue.
After series like X/1999, xxxholic, Wish, Chobits, Tsubasa, Magic Knights Rayearth, and Angelic Layer, I had high hopes for this CLAMP series. The only reason this got 2 stars was for the artwork. When random other fleeting characters have more personality than the two leading roles, I don't feel very involved or interested. Kobato flounces around with a Ford Prefect-esque happy yet simple attitude and is constantly berated by Ioryogi. She doesn't learn anything. She doesn't mature. Ioryogi doesn't get any nicer, for the most part (poor puppy who just wants a beer), and their relationship doesn't change. I did enjoy the key at the end that explains some of the references and language used for those of us who are unfamiliar with Japanese language and culture. Beyond that, though, the story and characters didn't have much in terms of redeeming qualities.
I recomend this to my friend, she is borrowing this book from me, i think she might like it. I sure did! It's about a girl who is really new to this "world"
Amo, adoro e idolatro a Kobato.
¿Amas CLAMP, pero odias sus finales? Seguro amarás este! Leanlo, en serio, seguro les encantará.
Although episodically more repetitive than xxxHolic due to the tests Ioryogi puts Kobato through, I detected more charm during my second go-around with this volume compared to the last time. Maybe it's having more CLAMP under my belt now at 26? It's hard to say. Their art continues to be impeccably detailed, especially with the characters. Fujiwara is easily their prettiest male lead I've seen from them. There's also enough mystery surrounding Kobato's origins that I'd like to follow them through.
First Read Review (February 26th, 2019):
Original Rating: Three Stars
While the art was gorgeous, the cameos cute, and Kobato being the precious ball of light that she is, CLAMP’s introduction to this series fell a little flat with a drawn out storyline and not enough hints for future reveals to make me want to continue on past this volume. Maybe the anime adaptation will be stronger?
Oh, CLAMP. I will try anything from CLAMP. Kobato, at least is pretty. Very pretty. I've always been a sucker for CLAMP art. And Kobato herself is cute, though the new-to-the-world gimmick would surely get old after awhile. The story itself is too thin and shallow for me to enjoy, though. But at least it's pretty.
Somehow I’ve never actually read Kobato but my public library had it so I gave it a go! It’s not great! The art is solid Tsubasa-era clamp stuff, but the plot is all the shit I found annoying in CCS cranked up to eleven
Full of pretty CLAMP illustrations, it has their trademark "love transcending all barriers" type of story (considering Wish, Vol. 01, Suki: A like story, Vol. 01 and so on).
It's pretty, but as always, the story is a bit weird and convoluted. Still, it's charming, and has its moments.
I was immediately drawn to this manga out of a love for most things CLAMP (I must admit that there's a few of their stories that were just bland). While it was better than some of their other works such as Suki, it didn't capture me quite like some of their other works did.
Kobato is a clumsy yet well-meaning girl who just wants her wish granted. She seems to want to go to some mysterious destination, yet can't go until she fills some bottle with the broken hearts of people that she manages to help. What doesn't help is that she hasn't "earned" this bottle yet & her guardian spirit (in the shape of a stuffed dog) seems to want to put her through many random tests in order to get her to qualify for this quest!
Overall I liked this story. The artwork is very nice & the characters are all pretty cute. Even most of the background characters are drawn to heavily resemble many of the characters of CLAMP's other works, which is nice from time to time. It's just that for the main part of this book, the story didn't seem to have any real focus to it. There's a few hints at future storylines, but for the most part the book is Kobato going about her tests, having cute misunderstandings due to her not being aware of common everyday things, as well as her guardian giving her a well-meaning scolding for said misunderstandings. I am glad to say that this does pick up in the next volume (so don't give up yet!), but this may put off many readers. Having a fluffy plot works for some of CLAMP's other books such as Miyuki-chan in Wonderland, but for something like this that seems to hint at a deeper plot, I can't help but want a little more substance.
So far I'm kind of torn as to whether or not to really start collecting this series. It's got great artwork & the characters are cute, but so far it isn't really inspiring me to collect them all. Die-hards of CLAMP will probably snap this up as soon as they see it, but others of us will probably sit back & wait to see if the series gets any better in the future.
--- Kobato: The Miracle Girl 1-6 --- Plot: Ok. Penokohan: Ok. Gambar: Style gambar grinyol-grinyol-nya manis (*^3^) //eh.
Be gi tu lah, Kobato^^.
3.5 stars. I always review manga series after I’ve finished most of it, if not all of it. It goes by so quickly that I only ever have a full grasp of how it makes me fill after it’s done, but this one let me know how I was going to fill about it from the first volume, I did Finish it before writing this review thought. This story is cute, I feel like I say that a lot but is true. I loved Kobato so much she was soooo precious. The end was good but I wish that it was a little less opened on certain characters stories, like they could have showed us a certain someone’s reunion, that would have been awesome. But that all I have to complain about.
I picked this book up at the library on a whim because it looked cute, but honestly? I had higher hopes. The story completely starts in the thick of things, which would be fine, but nothing ever really gets explained. I get that her wish is supposed to be a secret, but who the hell is Ioryogi and how did Kobato meet him? Etc etc. needless to say, I wanted to put it down after the first ten pages, but I stuck it out incase things would get better. They never did. Save yourself some time and don't read it.
I did not want to like Kobato. The main character feels like an alien due to her lack of knowledge of human behaviors/traditions and her poor social skills, her sidekick verbally berates her at every given opportunity, and the manga is filled to the brim with cameos from CLAMP's other works, which will leave new fans wholly confused. The manga switches from comedy to gritty seriousness enough to give readers whiplash, and the main characters dance around each other for most of the first volume, interacting for the first time in the last few chapters. It shouldn't work. But it does. I caught myself laughing quite a bit while reading this volume. Whether it be at the absurdity of Kobato's decisions or at the situations she naturally found herself in. The dialogue is clunky but self-aware, and by the end I was having a lot of fun watching the characters' reactions. I recognized most of the cameos, and it was nice to see so many recurring faces from other works. I even liked Kobato towards the end! Sure, we're not clear on her motivations or why she needs to go through these tests specifically (my bet's still on her being an alien), but she's so upbeat and adorable it's hard not to get swept along in her enthusiasm. You really just have to treat this as a less-serious Tsubasa: just embrace the absurdity and you'll have a good time. It's not perfect by any means, but it's a lot of fun, and I'll be picking up the second volume soon just to see where all this craziness goes.
Cute and fashionable pula!
DUH, CLAMP!
Bueno bueno, hello there!
I honestly don't know about this one. I have so many questions, questions that I don't think the authors intended, such as: Where do they live? It mentions them being homeless, but why? Where are they from? How are they actually living? I don't know much about homelessness in Japan, so are they going to shelters? Are they begging on the streets? How are they eating? How old is this girl and why is the dog with her? How is she getting different outfits? Then there are the questions I'm sure the authors intended, like, Why is she so dumb? Why does the dog care? Who is this weird blue talking demon dog? Where is she wishing to go?
The story is about a girl, Kobato, who is homeless and going around with a crazy abusive little blue dog that pretends to be a soft animal. The dog is trying to teach her common sense and is grading her performance. When she scores high enough she will get a magic bottle she will have to fill with wounded hearts. In this volume, all of the dog's tests involve how to act properly during different holidays.
