Kobato., Vol. 02

Rate this book
Now that cheerful, clumsy, and often clueless Kobato has her magic bottle, all she has to do is fill it up with the sorrows of wounded hearts to realize her one greatest wish. The only problem is Kobato doesn't have any idea how to cure one wounded heart, let alone a whole bottleful! Still learning about the world under Ioryogi-san's instruction (read: browbeating), Kobato starts out by offering a helping hand to Sayaka-sensei, the director of a kindergarten that's fallen on hard times. Can Kobato's limitless cheer break through the dark shadows that surround the fate of the center? And at the end of the day, will she be any closer to filling up the magic bottle?

CLAMP originally began in 1989 as a twelve-member dōjinshi circle, but by 1990, the circle had diminished from twelve to seven. Of the remaining seven, Tamayo Akiyama, Sei Nanao, and Leeza Sei left the group during the production of the RG Veda manga. Other former members of CLAMP also included Soushi Hishika, O-Kyon, Kazue Nakamori, Yuzuru Inoue and Shinya Ōmi. Currently, there are four members in the group.

In 2004, CLAMP's 15th anniversary as a mangaka group, the members changed their names from Nanase Ohkawa, Mokona Apapa, Mick Nekoi, and Satsuki Igarashi to Ageha Ohkawa, Mokona, Tsubaki Nekoi and Satsuki Igarashi (her name is pronounced the same, but written with different characters) respectively. The August 2004 issue of Newtype USA, a magazine specializing in events of the anime and manga subcultures, reported that the members of CLAMP simply wanted to try out new names. In a later interview with Ohkawa, it was revealed that initially Mokona wanted to drop her surname because it sounded too immature for her liking, while Nekoi disliked people commenting that her name was the same as Mick Jagger's. Ohkawa and Igarashi, wanting to go with the flow of Nekoi's and Mokona's name changes, changed their names as well.

In 2006, they made their first USA public debut at Anime Expo in Anaheim, California. They were well received at the convention, with 6,000 fans in attendance at their panel.

I love the artwork of CLAMP. You won't be disappointed reading this series. The plot is good too. So far there is a lot of mystery behind the characters. Also, I am a little worried because Kobato has a lot of hearts to heal before this is all over. Her jar is still really empty and there are only four more volumes left!

This was just adorable and I love that, despite being clumsy and really not understanding life, Kobato is working hard. Doing all she can to help people, helping with the kindergarten, and finding people. I love how she is with the kids and how they quickly bonded.
Next to Kobato figuring out things, trying to heal people, we also have a loan shark who is threatening the kindergarten and who does all sorts of crap stuff. I wasn't always a fan of that, but it certainly made things a bit more exciting. I am sure if it was just Kobato doing her things it would get boring.
Fujimoto and Ioryogi need to be a bit less abusive towards Kobato. Both do show they care about her, but they could be a bit kinder, less nicknames, less being angry. Help her out if she doesn't understand, teach her how it works.
Wonderful art and I so want to wear Kobato's dresses/hats.

So, while the first volume established basic premises, the cast of characters, and locations, this second volume is really where the main story gets going. We still have plenty of unanswered questions, especially the big, juicy ones like “Why can’t Kobato remove her hat?” and “Where does Kobato want to go?” and...well, all my big questions center around Kobato, but there's enough else going on that I’m plenty happy waiting for the answers. In general, I’m loving this manga, no complaints or criticisms to share (though I still haven’t gotten used to the super skinny, tall bodies that all the characters, especially the adults, have, but that is so consistently and well done that it’s clearly a style choice and not an anatomical blunder) so I shall continue onto volume 3!

A bit stronger than the first volume. Still nowhere near their best work, but the plot is beginning to coalesce and I'm starting to get a little bit of a Yotsuba vibe off it, which is never a bad thing

It was so cute! After reading the first one, I had to get the whole series! I love them. I love how energetic and passionate she is about everything in this one. I can't wait to get to the next.

Review for the complete series

Kobato has a wish. To have her wish granted, she needs to heal wounded hearts - unfortunately, she doesn't know all that much about the world around her. With the help of Ioryogi - a soft toy dog - Kobato goes on a mission to better understand how the world and the people in it work and always hoping she might heal someone.

Firstly, Kobato is adorable. I absolutely love her design and all her outfits - I'd read this series just for that! But she's also got a very loveable personality. Granted, naive and ditzy characters can get on my nerves, but Kobato is written well; she's such a ray of sunshine and her cluelessness is explained by the plot.

In general, Kobato. is a sweet and fluffy series, there's really very little evil in it - even the villains aren't exactly bad guys. It was a little hard to get into at with how episodic it was; Kobato stumbled from one scenario into the next of trying to understand the world - by that I mean things like how to behave on Christmas or Valentine's Day. Once Kobato ends up as an assistant in a nursery, the plot gains substance and direction.

Although this series can be read by itself, I think those familiar with other CLAMP works can appreciate it more; there are many cameos of other CLAMP figures, in fact, a lot more than any other CLAMP work (Tsubasa not included as that one brings together almost all works). Some of the cameos are very brief but there's just something very satisfying seeing all these characters. Knowing these characters' stories definitely makes their part in Kobato. more meaningful.

The art, of course, is beautiful - I'm tempted to say this is actually one of my favourites among CLAMP's styles. That being said, it does use the long-limbed proportions which were quite prominent in Tsubasa. These unnaturally long limbs never sat quite right with me, so it's actually saying something that I would still consider this one of my favourite styles despite the odd proportions.

Kobato. is a light and endearing read. It's nothing mindblowing, but it doesn't need to be. I'd dearly recommend it to people who generally like CLAMP and their characters, but it can be a nice little read for newcomers as well.

I think the reason I both like and dislike Kobato is because of the plentiful amount of CLAMP's favorite tropes that appear throughout the series. Kobato herself is very ditzy and appears to have made it this far through being cute and caring hard enough. I'm also beginning to wonder if she has an inner ear infection since she trips all the damn time. We still have no idea what her wish is, nor why she made it, or who her stuffed animal companion is or why he was cursed, simply because CLAMP likes their mysteries and not showing readers their hand until the very end. This sort of thing works well for a long-form mystery or action series, but not so much for an upbeat comedy manga. I'm also going to throw in a mini-complaint about CLAMP's romance writing in general, as I'm not sure it applies to Kobato just yet. CLAMP likes to write couples that dislike each other, but everyone else in the series can tell that it's really underlying romantic tension, even if the audience can't. This applies to Watanuki and Doumeki from Xxxholic, Fai and Kurogane from Tsubasa, and more relevantly Kobato and Fujimoto. It's asking a lot of the reader to want to people who actively dislike each other to get together in the end. We've seen a little bit of character development between our lead and Fujimoto, so I hope it gets better from here on out.
The series has its moments, however. Kobato is endearing in her innate kindness and willingness to help those in need, regardless of her lack of knowledge or even ability to make any real difference in a situation. You want to see her succeed in her goals, and celebrate with her in every bit of progress. The art style is very cute, if a bit lacking in depth at times, and very detailed. It's easy for an artist to resort to drawing the same outfit and hairstyle over and over again, but CLAMP excels at creating interesting and diverse outfits for their cast. I also like the twists and turns the manga is taking. I was taken by surprise by the plot twist of this volume, and that's a rarity these days. As a side note, Loan Shark Okiura looks like Fai with dark hair, and no one can convince me otherwise.
I'll keep reading until the end, mostly because I'm curious to see Kobato's wish come to fruition and whatever Ioryogi's backstory contains.

I enjoy stories about nice people and Kobato is definitely a nice person. Volume 1 introduced the cast and volume 2 begins the story. I sense some familiarity with the plot; maybe I watched some of the anime episodes in the past. I have volumes 3, 4 and 6 and am missing 5. I think that will be okay.

Wow! This volume feels like a complete 180 from the first one. There is an actual story line that I'm invested in! The characters are far more fleshed out and intriguing! And the angry dog is less angry!!! I'm actually enjoying it!
