I was born on a farm in the state of Iowa, Audubon County, Lincoln Township. To say that my upbringing was bucolic would be an understatement. My first writing was for the Audubon Advocate as the Douglas Township correspondent. I was 13 and received the magnificent sum of $.03 per line. If the item were published in the society section, the pay increased to $.04. The monthly check was always under $5.00.

My mother took me to Phoenix, AZ when it became impossible for me to eat, sleep, or breathe in Iowa. The climate restored my health and I attended school there, graduated, and married my high school sweetheart. Together we raised two wonderful children. During this time I started writing stories and sold one story to Jack and Jill. In 1976 he moved us to Western Washington to escape the desert sun. Washington is a land where it can and did rain 133 1/3 inches of water a year. He was a finish carpenter contractor; I did the books, and worked for Nintendo of America. Upon retirement, we returned to the desert and this wonderful, quirky town of Twenynine Palms. We had just celebrated our 45th wedding anniversary when he passed away.

I serve on the Twentynine Palms Historical Society as a docent, and write a column for the Old Schoolhouse Journal.

Interesting read!
I love epic fantasies, and this is one of my most favorite books. I enjoyed the whole journey with well-crafted characters and the smooth flow of words of the author. I'm a fan of Mari Collier. She did an amazing job.

Head into distant worlds where the author has created a journey where different factions are trying to rule. This includes conquerors, the house of sisters, the Dons of Maca and more. The author shows us that even in another world similar problems to what we face in our own world arise. You don't have to grab all the books to enjoy the amazing journey, but my suggestion is to grab the whole series and get lost in the story.

Strange World of Thalia

After Llewellyn and his family and friends from earth make their escape from 20th Century United States CIA becoming suspicious and trying to take them prisoners, he and his friends make their entrance into Thalian civilization, finding the Sisters now have control of the world. The Sisters are basically the Warriors, but have control over agriculture, food distribution, and enforce the caste like system, now turning the male faction and anyone opposing the Sisters into a low caste called the Abs with little or no rights, having to scrape out a bare existence. However, family is still very strong, and even the Abs parents and children stick together in their fight for justice and survival, but the society was strange enough, that I found myself having to read over and over certain passages to understand all the new Thalian characters and figure out their roles in all the action taking place. There was a definite disconjunct between this being a highly technological society, yet so many poor and uneducated people with no means to improve their situation. Actually, sounds a lot like modern earth, when you think about it, though. However, I found the first three books totally believable and emotionally compelling, while I struggled to understand this society just alien enough to make it difficult to follow. Yet I could not leave it unread, because Llewellyn has a plan, and step by step, gets the various Houses to support his return to power, declaring himself Maca of Don, and restoring other Houses to their rightful rule, with their wives, or Counselors supporting and advising them. I certainly recommend this book, it is well worth the extra concentration to understand it, realizing how Mari Collier blends ideals of the Old West with the strange, alien world of another humanoid species' culture.

The family arrives on Thalia. We learn about the customs and politics of Thalia. Lorenz tries hard to adjust to the Thalian way of life, but he is surprised at every turn by how different things are from earth.

Llewellyn really comes into his own as a leader. Knowing how much he wanted to come home makes watching his return to Thalia special, but things are definitely not easy for him.

In Return of the Maca, the Sisterhood is determined to destroy all of the male Macas, including Llewellyn. The battle for Thalia ignites a revolution. No matter who wins, one thing is certain, nothing will ever be the same.

Difficult read.

The first three books I flew through, this one I felt lost at times. Overall a good read. Will say I read because worried I wouldn’t understand the fifth book if I didn’t.

It is a rarity for me to complain about a book. I have a couple of complaints about this one even though I liked the story as a continuance of the series. First there are so many names and relationships that are not clear until the end of the book, and even then some are not clear, that it is difficult, if not impossible, to keep the characters straight from time to time. Obviously the characters from the first three books are easy to deal with. But there are so many Macas, so many Guardians, so many Counselors, so many leaders of one kind or another in this one I frankly got lost from time to time. POV is an issue here because of all these characters and their interrelationships. I liked this story, as a continuation of the saga of Llewellyn and his family. I wondered about the lack of use of the pilot of the Golden One as the story went along and the rebellion of the Sisters against Llewellyn and his family occurred. The rebellion was well presaged in the rest of the book but the failure to use the Golden One to crush the rebellion is without any explanation at all, or if it is there I missed it in one of my confused moments. I give the book four stars because I love the series, liked this story as a continuation of the series, not as a stand alone. It was, as all Mari Collier's books are, well written.

Return of the Maca

I didn't give this book of the series as many stars because I felt some thing s needed to be more clear than they were. The glossary needed to be more complete also as this would have helped things to be better explained. Still a great story and enjoyable characters.
