Dr. Ken Ham is the president of Answers in Genesis USA and is a well-known speaker and author on the subject of Young-Earth Creationism. He received a bachelor degree in applied science (emphasis on environmental biology) from the Queensland Institute of Technology, and a Diploma of Education from the University of Queensland. He has also received two honorary doctorates: a Doctor of Divinity from Temple Baptist College, and a Doctor of Literature from Baptist Liberty University.

He was a director of Creation Science Foundation (CSF) in Australia, an organization which he jointly founded with John Mackay. In 1987 he moved to the United States, still maintaining his links with CSF.

From 1987 to 1993, Ham worked for the Institute for Creation Research, and in 1994 set up what in 1995 became Answers in Genesis (AiG), a creation ministry dedicated to "upholding the authority of the Bible from the very first verse."

In 2008 Ham was described by well known atheist and evolutionary biologist PZ Myers as a "Wackaloon" for carrying out a prayer session with members of the Pentagon. Ham responded regarding the validity of that prayer breakfastand that PZ Myers and other critics were intolerant of his position.

This is the most up-to-date and perhaps the most complete dinosaur book for kids today!
What a neat educational tool this book is for the kiddos. In a very fascinating filled with imagery way, author Ken Ham uses Dinosaurs for Kids and gives details on the dinosaurs as well as explaining in a very easily comprehensive format how the world was created according to scriptures. He even gives references and statement points for discussion with people who disagree. I think it is about time someone provided resources such as this and I am eager to look to see what other topics Ken Ham has to offer for children's educational books.

AND NOW...THE FIRST CHAPTER:

Dinosaurs for Kids

by

Ken Ham, illustrated by Bill Looney

Dinosaurs can provide a great way to learn about history. You may already be familiar with some of these dinosaurs. These drawings show you what we think they may have looked like. Now, we don’t know for sure, of course, as we usually only find their bones as fossils (and most times, only a few of their bones). Artists use what bones have been found, knowledge about living animals, and some imagination to come up with drawings like these. See if you can pronounce these dinosaur names:

Dilophosaurus (die-LOF-o-SWAR-us), meaning “two-crested lizard.”
Styracosaurus (sty-RAK-o-SAWR-us), meaning “spiked lizard.”
Triceratops (tri-SER-a-tops), meaning “three-horned face.”
Megalosaurus (MEG-a-lo-SAWR-us), meaning “big lizard.”
Iguanodon (i-GWAHN-o-don), meaning “iguana tooth.”
Ceratosaurus (ser-ah-toe-SAWR-us), meaning “horned lizard.”
Deinonychus (die-NON-i-kus), meaning “terrible claws.”
Velociraptor (vee-LOHS-i-RAP-tor), meaning “swift robber.”
Ultrasaurus (UHL-tra-SAWR-us), was so nicknamed because of its enormous size.
Seismosaurus (SEIS-mo-SAWR-us), meaning “earthquake lizard.”

Did you know there are hundreds of dinosaur names? However, there were not hundreds of types of dinosaurs. There were a number of similar ones that should be grouped into categories known by what the Bible describes as “kinds.” Does that sound a little confusing? Well, this book will help to explain this and a lot of other things about dinosaurs you may not know.

(Pictures with names):

Dilophosaurus
Styracosaurus
Triceratops
Iguanodon
Ceratosaurus
Velociraptor
Ultrasaurus
Seismosaurus

Before we begin, I don’t want you to miss out on knowing what my very favorite dinosaur is! In fact, I think he deserves this whole page to himself! It is the mighty Tyrannosaurus rex (ti-RAN-oh-SAWR-us-rex), meaning “tyrant lizard king.” I’ll let you in on a secret – I love T-rex because I like his teeth! I use teeth to teach kids and parents some very interesting things about dinosaurs – things that you may not have heard or really understood before. But it is very important to understand the truth about dinosaurs!

FOUR FAST FACTS

T-rex fossils are found in Canada and the western United States.
The first documented T-rex fossil was discovered in 1902 by Barnum Brown.
Scientists think T-rex skeletons were made up of close to 200 bones.
T-rex had around 60 teeth, which ranged in size based on their placement in the jaw of the skull.

With a strong tail extended for balance, an adult T-rex could be a little over 40 feet in length, 12-13 feet tall at the hips, and weigh between 5 and 7 tons. T-rex’s jagged teeth could be up to 9 inches long, and like sharks, the T-rex was able to replace teeth when one was lost.

What’s in a name? Remember that the T-rex name means “tyrant lizard king.” But secular scientists are still wondering whether T-rexes were active hunters or clever scavengers, or a combination of both. However, creation scientists are able to explain the evidence in a different way using the biblical account of history, as we will soon learn.

FOUR FAST FACTS

The word “fossil” is from the Latin word meaning “dug up.” Scientists often make assumptions about dinosaurs based on a few fossilized bones, bone fragments, or other fossil remains, impressions, etc.
Only a few thousand dinosaur skeletons have been discovered.
The vast majority of fossils discovered are marine invertebrates (creatures that don’t have backbones like clams).

I’m sure you have lots of questions about dinosaurs. I believe I can answer many of those questions for you because dinosaurs are not a mystery at all. I know someone who was there when dinosaurs came into existence, and was also there when they seemed to disappear from the earth. In fact, this “someone” has written a book for us that gives a detailed account of the history of the universe. He tells us when the earth began, as well as when all the living creatures and the first humans appeared.

Now, you may be asking “Who is this someone you say was there to see the dinosaurs?” He is the Creator of all things. He knows everything because He is all powerful and has always been around. And this Creator had a book written for us to give us the details of how time began, and how the universe and all life came into existence. This book also tells us who we are, where we came from, and why we exist. It also gives us information on what is going to happen in the future! There is no other book like this on earth. It is unique, and it is called…the Bible.

When you understand the Bible, you will understand more about dinosaurs. The Bible helps us to answer questions about dinosaurs and about the world around us today.

Bigger. Among the most widely known type of dinosaurs, the sauropods (“lizard foot”) are some of the largest creatures to ever walk the earth. Many of these dinosaurs are known by only a few pieces of bone fragments, and debate continues on just which dinosaur was the largest ever. As discoveries continue, more will be known about these massive giants. Sauroposeidon (“earthquake god lizard”) was considered the largest dinosaur ever to live, until the discovery of Argentinosaurus (“silver lizard”). Though only a few bones of each creature have been found, many scientists estimate that Argentinosaurus was larger, though Sauroposeidon may have been taller.

Smaller. Compsognathus (“elegant jaw”) is among the smallest dinosaurs discovered. A little bigger than a chicken, this dinosaur weighed around 6 pounds. Some scientists have found smaller creatures, like Microraptors, which they try to use to prove dinosaurs were the evolutionary ancestor of birds – real science and the Bible disprove this idea. Archaeopteryx (“ancient wing”) is another example of a creature once thought to prove this link, but that idea has now been proven false.

Did you know that the Bible is really a collection of books written by people specially inspired by God, the Creator, to write down exactly what God wanted us to know? The Bible tells us more about who God is and why we can always trust Him to tell us the truth:

The God of the Bible is the true God: “But the LORD [is] the true God; He is the living God and the everlasting King…” (Jeremiah 10:10).
The God of the Bible is infinite – He is all knowing, all powerful: “Great is our Lord, and mighty in power; His understanding is infinite.” (Psalm 147:5).
The God of the Bible lives forever – He lives in eternity – He had no beginning and has no end: “Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever…” (1 Timothy 1:17).
The God of the Bible is the only true God – other gods people claim to have are false gods: “Therefore You are great, O LORD GOD. For there is none like You, nor is there any God besides…” (2 Samuel 7:22).
The God of the Bible is all wise and all knowing: “…in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” (Colossians 2:3).
Wow! What an awesome God.

The Only One.

Only God is a witness to the entire history of the world, including the history of dinosaurs. During the creation week, God created dinosaurs and flying reptiles. Pterosaur (“winged lizard”) like this one, could have wing spans of 30 feet. Stegosaurus (“roof lizard”) is easy to recognize with two rows of large plates running along its arched back, and its multi-spiked tail. Corythosaurus (“helmet lizard”) is a great example of dinosaurs with bony crests on their heads. Scientists think these crests were used in making sounds.

Does any human being (including any scientist) know everything? Has any human being always existed? The answer to both questions is, of course, NO. However, who is the only one who knows everything? Who is the only one who has always been there? The answer to both of these questions is, “the Creator God of the Bible.”

True History!

I call the Bible “The History Book of the Universe.” This is because it is a book that tells us how time and the universe began. And in the very first book of the Bible, the Book of Genesis, we are given a detailed account of not only how God created everything to begin with, but also major events of history that happened after creation.

You might be saying, “Wait a minute, haven’t scientists already found out lots of things about dinosaurs – that they lived millions of years before people and that they lived during the dinosaur age 200 million to 65 million years ago, and then they became extinct?”

Well, not all scientists say that! And though the majority of people today might believe that dinosaurs lived millions of years ago, the majority are wrong on this. And more and more people are now finding out the truth because they listen to and understand God’s Word!

In addition to having a great deal (and I mean GREAT DEAL) of information on dinosaurs, this book also does a terrific job in tying dinosaurs in to God's Creation. From "In the beginning" days 5 and 6 - when God created the birds and animals of every kind, to how animals (not just dinosaurs) became carnivorous, through Noah's Ark all the way to present day. I had just gotten into a discussion with my oldest daughter (17) about evolution vs creationism over the weekend as she was trying to reconcile what she had "learned" with what she believes. I also think it will come in handy as my 5 year old starts asking questions as he gets older.

I read this with my four-year old son who has many questions about dinosaurs. Its filled with fun facts and addresses various points of view. It’s very hard to find books that discuss common questions about dinosaurs from a biblical perspective such as: where did they come from, when did they live, who did they live with, and how did they die. Not only does this book engage the reader (young and old) with these questions, but also it presents the gospel in a clear and powerful way for all readers regardless of age. I highly recommend it.

I wanted something that spoke truth to my daughter in regards to dinosaurs and Creationism and Ken Ham delivers. He has an engaging writing style for both young and old learners alike and consistently backs up facts with Scripture. My child enjoyed every interesting dinosaur fact as it points back to young-earth Creationism. Illustrations in the book are also beautiful. It is a must-read!

This book talks about dinosaurs in a solid Biblical context, explaining things like "did Noah put dinosaurs on the ark?" and "are there dinosaurs in the Bible?" An excellent resource for Christian moms and dads who teach their kids about Jesus, but scratch their heads when it comes to dinosaurs.

Hilarious effort to squelch the natural curiosity of children in regards to the origin of dinosaurs, man, and earth via unsubstantiated religious doctrine. Creationist fiction at it's best/worst.

Oh for a good editor!!!

What I did like:
* The 7 "F" Stages:
1 - Formed (Creation)
2 - Fearless (In the Garden, man and animals live together without fear, without death)
3 - Fallen
4 - Flood
5 - Faded
6 - Found
7 - Fiction

* I was especially intrigued by his discussion of the Fearless age, his placement massive environmental change and an Ice Age after the flood, and his reference to legends about dragons (from Europe and China) as possible explanations for the presence of dinosaurs in the Faded Age.
* Good discussions of all the theories about what might have happened, or how it might have happened based on the scientific and Biblical information we have.
* Excellent mention of times science got it wrong, ways our knowledge about dinosaurs has changed.
* Helpful information about how displays of dinosaurs are assembled in museums.
* Clarification of the terminology in the Found Age is helpful. Realizing the term dinosaur is new helps put the ancient accounts (Biblical, mentioned here and non-Biblical which are not mentioned) into perspective.
* While the visual theme (particularly the thousands/billions logo with billions crossed out) didn't agree with me, the overall illustrations of dinosaurs are vibrant, life like, and even in some cases, scary. Much better than the cartoonified fare in other texts.

So why the disappointment. What I didn't like:
* The preachy, superior tone is grating. Why discredit what is being presented with such acrimony. Twice, Ham encourages children to challenge people who believe in evolution with the question "How do you know, where you there?" The youngster is supposed to take refuge in the knowledge that God was there.
* The section on the Bible emphasizing it is God's Word and reminding us of God's character, with Bible references is tedious. Don't get me wrong, I believe everything that is written there, it is just that it slows down the learning about dinosaurs, which is the purpose of the book. I understand they are related, but it just seemed heavy handed, and four pages was TOO MUCH!
* The opening pages claim there is no mystery about dinosaurs. But later pages talk about how there is a lot we don't know everything about dinosaurs and are learning more all the time. I would have liked the humble tone of the later pages to run through the entire text.
* This is a non-linear text. This was initially distracting, and prevents easy references of sections. There is some definition around the stages, but not enough to prevent flipping through the text to try to find tidbits. After I settled in, it didn't bother me as much, but I would have preferred something more linear in thought. Example: "Before we begin, I don't want you to miss out on knowing what my favorite dinosaur is: T-Rex!" This makes it difficult to find information as the fast facts are only somewhat organized. Example: There is a helpful section on how museum displays are put together that features Sue of the Field Museum of Chicago. Fast Facts that pertain to Sue are given on page 13, but there is a more detailed discussion on pages 58-59.

Bottom Line:
Excellent illustrations, well presented information, but preachy. Leaves me wanting better editing as this book is so close, but falls short. 3.95 stars. That's right, it's the first time I've ever given ratings to the hundredth place, but this was that close. Disappointing.

In Dinosaurs for Kids, Ken Ham of Answers in Genesis has asked us to consider that there was not an Age of Dinosaurs. Rather there have been seven "ages" of dinosaurs, alliterated as 7 F’s.

Formed – Dinosaurs were created on Day 6 with Man
Fearless – Man and dinosaurs co-existed without fear in God’s perfect Creation.
Fallen – Due to the effects of the Fall, carnivory begins. Since some dinosaurs eat meat now and since man is essentially meat, well…. the honeymoon is over!
Flood – The Great Flood destroys all life except that aboard the Ark. The majority of fossils are formed at this time.
Faded – The dinosaurs leave the Ark. Due to changes in climate and other factor [an Ice Age, for example] dinosaurs slowly go [mostly] extinct. Memories of dinosaurs as dragons take on some fantastical elements as the real creatures begin to fade from observable ecology.
Fossils – As noted, scientists begin to discover dinosaur bones and realize they were a distinct class of creatures no longer seen on Earth.
Fiction – The age in which we now live, where secular scientists, textbooks and museums tell us that dinosaurs lived millions of years ago, that they evolved into birds and other fictions.
Bill Mooney's illustrations are beautifully done. The book does a great job of relating dinosaurs from a Biblical perspective in an entertaining way and gives an invitation to the Gospel at the end, so bonus!

The only drawbacks to this book are in its formatting. If you're reading it to children, well, good luck. It doesn't read well. Little fact boxes, in the form of single text boxes and Four Fast Facts pepper the sections of this book. I think they do make the book more interesting, but it makes reading it to smaller children a bit of an ADHD experience! This book is clearly intended for children who can read it at their own pace.

I generally recommend Dinosaurs for Kids for those who have children with questions about dinosaurs and the Bible, but its a great synopsis of the Biblical creationist position for dinosaur enthusiasts of any age. You can find out more about Dinosaurs for Kids on Amazon and Answers in Genesis' website.

The reader of "Dinosaurs for Kids"by Ken Ham and published by Master Books needs to first of all understand that this is a publication for:

*Kids (maybe 3rd through 6th grade). Its tone is "I am talking to kids."
*It is written by and produced by a Christian author and a Christian publishing house that defends the Gospel and the Biblical account of creation.
*It is not a good source for introducing the authentication of when dinosaurs roamed the earth to non-believers (non-Christians) because you must first of all convince them that the Bible is truth and is the Word of God. That is the basis for every argument and statement in Dinosaurs for Kids.

The illustrations are excellent and I was very pleased that they were not cartoons. The dinosaurs are very "lifelike" and show great variety within their "kind." The explanation of how secular science has misinterpreted the fossil record and how our understanding of the fossil record - especially that of dinosaurs - has changed through the years.

I enjoyed the section that showed how "Sue" was discovered in the 1990s and is now located in a Chicago museum and this particular fossil dinosaur was reconstructed and how it applied to the reconstruction of fossil remains.

The book dwells exhaustively on the Biblical text as through it needs to be reiterated on nearly every page. For the Christian home this should not be necessary and for the home of new Christian parents and children, it could become tedious and irking.

The 7 "F" Stages of Dinosaurs was an interesting concept:

** Formed (When Creation)
** Fearless (In the Garden, man and animals live together without fear, without death)
** Fallen (Age of Sin and Death)
** Flood (Fossils formed and spread over the world)
** Faded (begin to die out)
** Found (People rediscover dinosaurs and that they were not myths)
**Fiction(Biblical truth vs Evolution)

A lovely book and worth incorporating into the church, Christian school, and home library.

Great book, nice colorful pictures, and evolution was debunked through out it! I loved how much good Biblical information was in it and Mr. Ham constantly went to the Bible and showed Scriptures. The Gospel was clearly presented, although I would have also included the 10 Commandments. I wasn't too thrilled with the prayer at the end to reiterate the importance of salvation. I'm wary of set prayers because in the evangelical church today so many people say, okay repeat this prayer after me, ask Jesus into your heart, and now you are saved! It wasn't like that though, so I'm thankful at least it wasn't watered down, the book just could have been written just as good without it in my opinion. I got this for my nephew who is turning 10, I hope he enjoys it as much as I did:)

I never thought I'd start a review of a book about dinosaurs with religious commentary, but here we are.

This book teaches a creationist view of dinosaurs. That they existed in the Garden of Eden as peaceful vegetarians until Adam and Eve ate the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. That they co-existed with humans and that they were present on Noah's Ark and survived a bit in the postdiluvian world until eventually dying off.

That's fine. I completely disagree with that, but that's what some people believe and I don't see a problem with writing a book based on that.

But the book isn't just about teaching kids about dinosaurs and how their fossils are due to the Flood. It's primarily about teaching kids that the Bible is right in all things and it's their duty to let people know that any deviation from the Bible is fiction.

The Bible is the most important book in the entire universe, a book that is totally accurate in every way, with no mistakes

The kids that are the audience for this book are probably too young to understand that Genesis was written long after Adam and Eve or Noah lived. That prior to that, it was oral history, and that over time, oral stories tend to get a little mucked up as people forget some of the details and insert their own ideas either to fill the gaps or make for a better story. I get it, God would have made sure that there weren't any errors, but we know that there are differences in various versions of the books and in their translations (such as giving Moses horns). And these kids aren't going to understand that what we today call the Bible is a collection of books that were determined by various people over the course of hundreds of years, and even now, there's disagreement as to what should be included in the Bible. Were some actual books inspired by God left off the list? Did some that were not actually inspired by God make it in? Have some been lost to time, and may yet be found and included in the future? It doesn't matter in this book...the Bible is always right. I assume that means just the New King James Version, which is where all of the Bible quotes come from. Forget about all those other versions, or the Dead Sea Scrolls, or whether or not the Apocrypha should be included.

I get it. Kids can't understand all the intricacies of Bible study. They just want to learn about dinosaurs. But there's another lesson meant to be learned in this book, and it's one that I thought was a bit ironic. Observation is the only true way we can ever know something.

Did you know you can ask very simple questions to the scientists who claim that dinosaurs lived millions of years ago? You could say to them, in a very nice way of course, "Excuse me, were you there?" You are actually asking them, "Were you there to see the dinosaurs when they first came into existence? Were you there to see them alive? Were you there to see them die out?" Obviously, they weren't there, so how could they really know everything about them?

And yet Jesus blessed those who believe without seeing. I find it a bit ironic that the author's primary argument against evolutionary science is that he can't actually see it. That no one was around millions of years ago (since the universe was created just 6000ish years ago) and because there were no witnesses, it can't be true.

That being said, the book does include some good illustrations of various dinosaurs and other ancient reptilians (flying and swimming). There's even a mention of at least one crocodilian. And I don't disagree with some of the things talked about. Many cultures include a flood story, and even include a couple surviving in a boat. And there's some scientific evidence to support the idea of a massive flood creating the Mediterranean and/or Black Sea. There's a lot of science to support the idea of mankind starting in a singular place and spreading across the Earth. This doesn't contradict the Bible, other than in the timeline. This author has no place for that, though. It's what the Bible says, and that's it. And because of that singular focus, and the inability to accept anything else, I cannot recommend this book for any child. Not even as a work of fiction. It's not because of the creationist beliefs in here. It's because of the focus on only accepting the Bible, taking only those parts of science that supports the Bible and not even ignoring the rest, but actively trying to dispute everything else. It's the indoctrination of creating child warriors with a fervent belief in ignoring anyone who disagrees with them. That makes this a dangerous book. I wouldn't want any child to be this close-minded.

I originally rated this book, but have decided to not rate it as I cannot do so without bias. I think this book was written well for it's intended age range. The argument throughout the book of "were you there?" is interesting, because a scientist can ask the same question: were you there to see who wrote the books?

It's a circle that will never end of asking each other who was there. Bottom line, I like unbiased scientific facts over speculation.

Theologically and content wise I would give this book a 5 star. I agree with what is written inside, and for that I am extremely thankful. This would line up with the Bible timeline for creation. At some points it was repetitive because we just read the book Dinosaurs of Eden by Ken Ham, and it seemed like this book was repeating many things as if we didn’t just read that book, although it was the next one in the line up in the Masterbook curriculum.

A book that tricks kids and parents alike to read it for dinosaur facts, but it is really a book on creationism that focuses on biblical literalism instead of scientific facts. If this is a book about creationism, that's fine but make that clear from the description and from the beginning instead of trying to hide behind the allure of dinosaurs.

My dinosaur-obsessed 9 year old loves it, mostly for the terrific graphics. I found it educational and fascinating for the non-evolutionary stand it takes and the biblical examples and scriptural references used.

While parts are a bit preachy, the book is well written for a child's level. The language is simple, but rich and the graphics and illustrations are beautiful. Ken Ham even provides discussion points for those who might disagree with the perspective of dinosaurs and the Creation.

Overall, a refreshing look at the unique world of dinosaurs from a unique perspective. I think it is a book that definitely needs to be read together as parent and child, because of the potential for discussions and lessons learned.

Every dinosaur imaginable is explained with its Latin name and meaning. The author divides the book into 7 chapters: Formed, Fearless, Fallen, Flood, Faded, Found, and Fiction. Each chapter starts with a picture and paragraph showing the main elements of the new chapter. He also shows what the dinosaurs ate, whether they are a carnivore, herbivore and omnivore.

Good overview of dinosaurs, explaining the truth behind the creation science-evolution debate in a way that kids can understand. Unfortunately, it also includes an urge for readers to "receive the free gift of salvation", sadly common for many creation science books from Protestants.
