This was a deep dive into the 12 Steps from a somewhat different angle than what is usually ... understood ... at the typical Alcoholics Anonymous gathering, or at any of the other Anonymous groups. In the traditional 12 Steps whenever God is mentioned, He comes with the qualifier "as we understood Him."
Fr. Ciorra does include the phrase when he quotes the Steps - they are part of the Steps and have guided many thousands, millions, in fact - but it is clear that as he walks us up the ladder he is narrating our faith journey.
I have always thought this was the intention of the founders of AA but it is (properly, I think) subtle in the Big Book and other AA literature, because all are welcome, regardless of their beliefs or lack of.
Fr. Ciorra made the Steps come alive to me in ways I've not experienced in many years, and I'm so grateful for this book, which seems to be a 12-part lesson or lectures. His manner was warm and conversational, as if he was talking to a friends. Maybe he was. It looks like it took me a very long time to read/listen to, and it did because I re-listened most of the chapters at least once, and most chapters more.
I would recommend this one to anyone I know, anyone who's addicted to anything, or to nothing (if that is possible). Definitely worthy of all the stars!

I'm really enjoying all works by Fr. Anthony Ciorra. I love his style, content, and structure. But I especially love this work as it's unique in referencing the 12 step program to depart from addictions and distractions from God. Various retreat leaders tend to use the 12 step program as it's something that people, in general, are familiar with, but sometimes I need to hear things repeatedly to get it through my thick skull. I'm going to look up other titles of Fr Ciorra, and the 12 steps themselves as a visual reminder to grow in trust in Our Lord for greater peace and love. Highly recommend this title!
