Those Christmas Angels is the fifth book of Debbie Macomber’s Angels Everywhere holiday-themed series, which returns to its mostly romantic roots. In this one we have Roy Fletcher, a businessman who is deeply cynical about love and relationships following a devastating betrayal that affected both him and his mother, Anne. But Anne has come to terms with it and prays that her son will, too, so that he’ll be able find someone he can truly love and trust. Her prayer request lands on the desk of the archangel, Gabriel, who assigns Shirley, Goodness and Mercy to the case. They’re thrilled to be matchmaking again, but initially disagree over who would be the best match for Roy. Then along comes Julie Wilcoff, the daughter of Roy’s newly hired chief of security. Their first meeting is anything but cordial. In spite of that, though, Mercy thinks they’d be a perfect fit, so the angels engineer a little accident, which only ratchets up the tension between Roy and Julie. But eventually they find their way to a more romantic place that looks like it’s going to lead to an HEA if only Roy can overcome his distrust of women.

Roy is a successful businessman who several years ago had a serious relationship with a woman named Aimee. They were on the path to getting married until Aimee met Roy’s father, Burton, and from there, things went downhill. Burton and Aimee had an affair that turned into devastation and broken hearts for Roy and his mother, Anne, when both their relationships crumbled, and Anne was cheated out of a fair divorce settlement. Since then, Anne has picked up the pieces of her life and has reinvented herself as an artist, making a modest living, but Roy has languished in bitterness and cynicism. Anne’s Christmas wish is for Roy to find a woman who can love him for himself and who he can trust and love in return. After hiring a new head of security, Roy has a chance meeting with the man’s daughter, Julie, in which he’s pretty rude about her presence on his property. From there, the angel trio creates an accident in which Julie is thrown from her bike and it appears that Roy may have hit her with his car. The two argue incessantly over who was at fault, and although he admits no wrongdoing, Roy decides to head off an expected lawsuit by paying Julie off. Incensed that he would be so distrustful, she refuses his money, and gradually Roy starts to open his heart to her, thinking that she really is different. Romance begins to blossom, but when Julie refuses an offer to move in with Roy, his old tendency to distrust starts rearing its ugly head again, leading to a breakup in need of a Christmas miracle to get their relationship back on track. Although Roy has good reasons for being so cynical, I had a hard time really liking him because he takes it to a level that’s pretty sexist, lumping all women into the lying, cheating category with his ex. He’s emotionally closed off, and when in a pique of anger, can say some rather mean things. The only thing that saved his character for me is that he has a few softer, more vulnerable moments, and he does eventually come to his senses. But I would have liked it even better if he’d groveled a bit more once he did.

Julie is a PE teacher and soccer coach who’s been very athletic all her life. She’s quite tall and larger-boned for a woman, so she’s never had the male attention that her more petite, prettier sister did. She recently lost her mother and has been living with her dad ever since to help him out with the bills and to find comfort in their shared grief. Her father is finally ready to go back to work and gets hired by Roy to head up security at Fletcher Industries. Julie first meets Roy when she carpools part-way to work with her father, who drops her off in front of the building so she can bike the rest of the way. Roy rudely questions her presence there, leaving the impression that he’s an ogre. Then later there’s the bike accident. When Julie receives the settlement offer in the mail, she’s incensed, marching right into Roy’s office to give him a piece of her mind, which only gets her forcibly thrown out of the building. However, as time goes on, she and Roy start to come to an understanding, which leads to friendship and a little romance. But when Julie refuses his offer to move in with him, he thinks she’s angling for more money. After trying to reason with him and getting nowhere, she’s finally had enough, leaving the angels with their work cut out for them getting these two back together in time for Christmas. Julie is a tough cookie who’s weathered through the death of her mother admirably. She’s a bit of a spitfire who doesn’t put up with Roy’s shenanigans, but she also recognizes how hurt he was in the past and tries to help him overcome that by being a good person and proving she doesn’t want his money. I’m not sure if I could have dealt with his cynical nature as long as she did, but I admire her for staying true to herself, which eventually was what turned Roy around.

Those Christmas Angels was a pretty good read. I felt like the romance between Roy and Julie could have been developed a little better by either making the book a bit longer or by paring down Anne’s part in it. Roy’s mom gets a decent amount of page time and POV scenes in her own little subplot. After Shirley allows Anne to see her, the woman paints an angel, which her friend, who’s an art dealer, works on selling for her. I liked how Anne and Roy were able to find a bit of karma through that part of the story, but it did take away from Roy and Julie’s time together. The story takes place over only a month’s time, so their romance is a bit quick for two people who start out basically hating each other to come to a point of, not just falling in love, but being ready for marriage as well. However, the magic that the angels bring to the story and its generally heartwarming nature helped me to suspend disbelief to some extent. I just wish they’d had a few more scenes together to build both their characterizations and their romantic connection. Overall, I liked the story despite it’s extremely prickly hero and I enjoyed having another visit with Shirley, Goodness and Mercy who, while still rather mischievous, seemed a little better behaved this time around.:-)

I mostly listened to this while cleaning up after our Christmas festivities. I wanted something predictable and with a spiritual Christmas theme, and I got that.

I wish that the author hadn't made so much of the main character being a "large framed" woman - there's one scene where her father tries to lift her over his shoulder, realizes she is too heavy, then drags her out of the room instead. It should be noted that she is 30 years old, and that they are in a public place.

Also, it bugs me when people refer to prayers as "unanswered" when they don't get exactly what they want. God is not a catalog service - you don't place an order and wait for it to arrive. "No" and "wait" are also answers. Also, I believe that prayer is a conversation -this involves listening on our part, which can take many forms.

I have a penchant for Debbie Macomber's books that are in the Angelic Intervention series. There is something about the angels, Shirley, Goodness and Mercy that very much appeals to me and interests me. The story in this book is very much like a typical Hallmark movie except for the inclusion of the angels. I enjoyed the four main characters, Julie, Roy, Dean and Anne very much. I am definitely open to reading the rest of the angel books written by Debbie Macomber.

Okay, I think it is official. I can't read romance novels without rolling my eyes. I mean I haven't even read ONE in all of 2010 but I was looking at my list of things that I said I was going to cross off and knew it was going to be a quick read. Um yeah... well that it was, but seriously??? How did I spend years reading them??????

Oh I take that back, the Kristin Hannah book I read was a romance and that also made me roll my eyes but it had a little more depth it in... True whatever? anywhoooo back on topic.

So, Those Christmas Angels by Debbie Macomber. I will say in the past (summers in college) I would curl up with her books and read them in a night.. the ones that had to do with knitting. They at least didn't have women acting like fools, men like jackasses and still having people fall in love. Cuz THAT IS NOT THE WAY IT IS.

I'm sorry but if a man tries to throw his money at you and accuses you of being like all other women and having a 'price' and how much money and jewelry will it cost him for you to be there whenever he wants you???? YOU RUN. YOU DON'T LISTEN TO HIM AGAIN.

This book basically has a guy who has lost all his happiness and trust in the world because his fiancee left him for his dad which caused his parents divorce and his mother to be penniless. He has tons of money but is a jerk. Enter angels who are going to answer his mom's prayer and find him a wife by Christmas Eve and it is already December (yeah you can roll your eyes now too). So the angels come and they may or may not cause some things to happen to introduce stubborn tall SOLID (wtf is wrong with being athletic and tall and not a freaking petite blond) Julie. They start off yelling at each other and it doesn't get much better until it magically does and then oh my gosh they are falling in love... but this is too easy there must be problems..

yada yada yada... rolling of eyes.... rolling of eyes..

I'm sorry, but it is a Christmas miracle I finished it. It is extremely easy to read, but wow I would not want anyone thinking it is acceptable to be treated the way Roy treated Julie and still get the girl in the end. He needed years of THERAPY before he was ready for Julie on a month with an angels help.

Okay, I should stop now.

This is one of those novels that is intrinsically Christmas-ey without being strictly about Christmas. Macomber takes some absolutely ridiculous situations and brings them to life in a realistic way. She also takes some very difficult real life situations and creates a very unique tale. I love how this reality mixes seamlessly with the angelic. The final chapter or epilogue wraps everything up nicely without being cheezy. It’s simply a conclusion to the tale that leaves you feeling satisfied.

Watching these characters get to know one another was absolutely hilarious at times and completely heartbreaking at others. You get to know them so well that you can’t help but love and feel for them, each in their own way. They are both very strong characters but so different from one another that it’s a striking relief. I really appreciate how Macomber takes the time to introduce you to both main characters’ pasts and presents, both how they perceive themselves and how others perceive them. The supporting cast was also great. The angels were absolutely priceless. Although they are a staple character throughout this series, you can easily get to know them through just this tale.

Overall, this was a brilliant Christmas tale that can be read either as a standalone or as part of this series. I’d definitely recommend it to those in need of a bit of Christmas cheer presented in a bit of a different manner.

This is another in the Christmas series starring Shirley, Goodness, and Mercy, the Christmas angels. Once again filled with rollicking humor (often caused by those 3 mischievous angels), this book is definitely another hit. Roy due to his past life events has become a bitter, stern, unhappy CEO. His mother, Anne, is trying hard to make a new life for herself as a divorcee. She has been hit hard by the same unfortunate events that knocked Roy for a loop. Dean Wilcoff is trying to recover from the loss of his wife and his job when Roy hires him to be part of his security department. Throw in Dean's strong willed, independent daughter, Julie, along with 3 angels who give a little heavenly assistance, and the fun and romance begin.

This book is a delightful holiday romp that will definitely put you in the Christmas spirt. From start to finish, with a touch of mischief, it will make you believe in Christmas miracles with its focus on love and forgiveness.

FAVORITE QUOTES:
"But happiness is a condition of the mind, not circumstances...That appears to be a most difficult lesson for humans."

"Forgiveness is hard, and most people tend to hold on to their hurts, to take some kind of perverse satisfaction in them."

"He needs what humans call luck, and we both know there's no such thing as luck, only God."

"Darlene used to say it was a couple's duty to keep their eyes open, their ears open, their hearts open, and the mouths shut."

I didn't mind the story over all - but I struggled with the religous ideas presented. On the one hand - I am trying to learn to embrace forgiveness and to heal my pains - so I was interested in the message. Conversely, I can't advocate being a victim and allowing people to crap on you because you believe that is what it means to be a good person. I felt the women in this book lived passively and "put things in God's Hands" instead of going after what they wanted and standing up for what was right.

I can see how this would speak to a lot of people - it just didn't strike the right chord with me.

As all Debbie Macomber's books: cute. It's hard to believe that someone as pigheaded as Roy could be successful in business. Hard to believe his opinion of women could change at the drop of a hat: "you're different," "you're just like all the rest." Not a lot of character development and certainly not a ringing endorsement of openness and honesty in relationships. Still, it was entertaining for a few hours.

Title: Those Christmas Angels
Author: Debbie Macomber
Publisher: Harlequin Audio
Format: 🎧
Narrator: Lisa Zimmerman
Genre: Romance and a bit of Women’s Fiction
Pub Date: November 25, 2025
My Rating: 5 Fun Stars -Love Ms. Macomber and Love ‘those Angels’!
Pages: 302

Story starts a few days before Thanksgiving with Anne Fletcher taking out boxes of Christmas decorations. She usually waits until after Thanksgiving but loves Christmas and decides decorating will help her mood. She thinks about all the wonderful times she had with her Now divorced as it seems Burton has fallen out of love with her and found someone else,
This betrayal was devastating to her as well as their son Roy. As his father’s new love Amy was Roy’s girlfriend.

Roy is a very successful businessman but is cynical about love and relationships. So puts all his time in his work.
Anne has moved on. She majored in art in college but when she married Burton who was a lawyer she became a businessman’s wife doing charity work and accompanying her husband on his events. However now has turned back to and is enjoy painting and sketching. However her son is on her mind so says a pray asking for help in find someone he can truly love and trust.
When Archangel, Gabriel gets Anne’s request –the ‘Christmas Angels’ -Shirley, Goodness and Mercy are assigned to the case. They are thrilled to be matchmaking again, but initially disagree over who would be the best match for Roy. Two of them believe that Julie Wilcoff, the daughter of Roy’s newly hired chief of security is perfect. However, Mercy point out Julie is not the tiny stylish Amy beautiful -Roy’s type. Julie is attractive but an athlete, now a teacher and PE Instructor as well as the Girls Soccer Coach. She is more comfortable wearing sweats than a designer dress.

Sure enough when Roy and Julie meet they immediately dislike one
Another- Julie believes he is the rudest man ever and he finds her pushy.

With help from ‘those Angels’ things start to turn so that they finally see the good qualities in one another.
However when things get steamy between these two, Roy tells Julie he wants her to move in with him. Julies wants love and marriage but that isn’t his offer. Hmmm

Ms. Macomber switches us readers over to what is happening with Anne and her art. As her Art Dealer friend Marta is working on selling her ‘Angel’ painting which was a vision she get got from one of ‘those Angels’.

Those Angels have their work cut out for them in helping Roy get over his distrust of women as well as his Scrooge attitude.

Want to thank NetGalley and Harlequin Audio for granting me this great audiobook.

If there’s one thing you can count on with Shirley, Goodness, and Mercy, it’s that when prayers go up, chaos comes down. In Those Christmas Angels, Debbie Macomber’s favorite celestial trio returns to play matchmaker for a man who’s buried himself so deep in work he can’t see the holidays (or happiness) coming. And naturally, these angels are going to do way more than gently intervene.

Anne Fletcher, a mother watching her son lose himself to career and bitterness, sends up a desperate Christmas prayer: please, send a woman who can show Roy what really matters. Heaven sends Shirley, Goodness, and Mercy—three angels who treat "following the rules" like a suggestion. Their mission? To get Roy Fletcher, corporate robot and Christmas cynic, to notice Julie Wilcoff, a woman who might just be the key to pulling him back to real life. Cue the staged run-ins, awkward encounters, and angelic whisper campaigns.

Though this is part of Macomber’s Angels Everywhere series, you can dive in without reading a single previous book—consider this a standalone holiday rescue mission. And while the angels bring plenty of laughs, there’s real heart under all the meddling. Roy’s loneliness feels real, Anne’s worry hits hard, and watching a man who’s built walls around himself start to let someone in is the kind of emotional payoff that makes Christmas stories worth it.

It’s also worth saying: this is a short, focused read—the kind of book you can finish in an afternoon with a cup of hot chocolate. Problems are fixed fast, lessons are learned in time for Christmas, and yes, it all wraps up with a neat bow. If you want something heavier or more drawn out, this won’t be it—but if you want warm fuzzies with a side of angel shenanigans, it delivers.

At 4 out of 5 stars, Those Christmas Angels is a quick, charming story about second chances, love, and angels who definitely don’t believe in playing it cool. Perfect for anyone needing a little holiday hope—and proof that even workaholics can be saved (with help from heaven’s sassiest team).

Perfect for the Holidays

Just the story that is needed at Christmas, this story is of love….how to accept and give along with what might happen if it is taken away.

Part of a series, the story involves three angels sent to earth to answer a prayer. Shirley, Goodness, and Mercy are sent to answer Anne’s prayer that her son, Roy, might find love again. Love being lost had burned him badly when his father married his ( Roy’s) former girlfriend. This left Roy with a hard shell around his heart but had allowed him to become extremely successful in the business world.

Chance meetings with Julie led to some interest but it isn’t easy. Roy’s mother, devastated from the divorce fro her ex-husband, had moved on to establish herself on her own. There is a little bit of “ gotcha “ in the story, one appreciated by anyone who might have found themself in a situation like Anne’s, Roy’s mother.

It might be nice if we had guardian angels around us, helping us achieve our necessary life goals or dreams. While we often wish for somewhat frivolous things, a little helping hand along the way might be nice in achieving our heart’s desires.

Shirley, Goodness and Mercy are prayer angels that have been sent to earth in response to a prayer by Anne Fletcher for her son. Anne's husband had divorced her 5 years ago and married her son's fiance. He'd also majorly cheated her financially. Roy has closed himself off to emotions, especially women.

Roy hires Dean Wilcoff as his new head of security. Recently widowed - he loved his wife and daughters. One of his 30-year-old twins lives with him and teaches PE at a school. SG&M throw the two of them together and there is a strong attraction and annoyance. The two do fall in love, but Roy still can't trust her, so she breaks it off. Eventually, he comes around and proposes.

Secondary story of Anne's angel painting making her rich when her ex-husband unknowingly gets into a bidding war for it for his new wife. Angel Gabriel sees into the future and tells all that everyone gets what they deserve.

Clean - no sex - a little foreplay. Fun light read with a happy ending.

This is a cute story about the angels, Shirley, Goodness, and Mercy. They come to Earth to accomplish a mission before Christmas. They're tactics aren't conventional.
Roy Fletcher is hurt from a previous relationship. He becomes a workaholic and feels that women want to use him for his money. Julie meets Roy, who hired her father when the angels stage an accident between Roy's automobile and Claire's bicycle. Roy's afraid that Claire will sue him, so he sets up a settlement. Julie is furious. She feels Roy is attempting to buy her out. She's not interested in the money. Everything that could go wrong does. Are the angels successful in their mission of matchmaking? Read this delightful story to find out.

Light Christmas fluff, lightly enjoyable overall. I'm finding this author highly variable, and this is about mid-range for books of hers that I've read. Angels as characters was an enchanting idea, although her attempts to develop personalities for them felt a bit contrived and shallow. The romance was sweet, and the mom's story line was compelling. Reality check, though: she wrote a "scene" in which the mom barges into a board meeting at her son's company to talk to him about his romance-- gimme a break! That was a pretty bad guffaw. I did enjoy the art theme, and was inspired by the angel paintings, especially since I had just sketched out an angel myself on Christmas Eve, shortly before I got to that part in the book.

A great holiday listen!

I am a sucker for a good grump, especially when he only melts his icy exterior for her. Roy and Julie were such a great duo. Julie helped Roy realize that he doesn't have to be a no-nonsense, cynical businessman all the time and that he can't just make problems go away with money. I also liked how Julie and Roy helped each other (somewhat unintentionally) work through some of the grief that they were holding on to.

The narrator did a wonderful job of bringing the whole cast of characters to life as well. It really helped me get sucked into the story and finish it in one sitting!

Thank you to Debbie Macomber and Harlequin Audio for a copy of the audiobook!

I’d say 3.75 stars?

I liked the storyline and was pleased with Anne’s prayer entering heaven and landing on Gabriel’s desk (did not expect that).

From the talk of God and the way life is if you walk in faith, I genuinely thought this would be a closed door romance! Those two or three moments of slight spice shocked the system and felt abrupt.

I also felt like the tactic of the angels answering all our questions is a cop out for properly developing a plot 🤷🏻‍♀️ just an opinion.

The RoyxJulie dynamic built unsteadily
. Do I think they were ready for marriage by the end of the book? NO. Roy needed therapy and Jesus, and Julie needs to wait.

Also, not as Christmasy as you’d want for holiday reading.

So, if it wasn't Christmas and there wasn't three very humorous angels in this book, I would have hated it. But it is Christmas and the angels were so funny, that I kind of loved it. The whole romance between Julie and Roy is not exactly original ... predictable romance novel fare with the usual misunderstandings followed by proclamations of undying love... and I'd usually have given up long before they finally got together. But with Mercy, Goodness and Shirley butting in, causing havoc and generally having a laugh down on Earth, you can't help but smile along with them. The Spirit of Christmas has a lot to answer for!

I'd love to see this as a film!

This story is filled with so many wonderful elements, beginning with the three angels sent to Earth in response to a mother's heartfelt prayer. A devastating betrayal shattered both her and her son Roy's lives, leaving him closed off to everyone.

Julie is still grieving the recent loss of her mother, and every time she crosses paths with Roy, who happens to be her father's new boss, they clash horribly. Watching their walls slowly crumble and their preconceived notions dissolve, was incredibly satisfying.

A truly enchanting holiday journey, this book reminds you to believe in love, miracles, and second chances.

3.4 Stars: it was way to childish and cutesy in the beginning. But then, it became real and like a perfectly reasonable story about how people react to loss and pain. It was cute. I felt that is was adequately developed, but that she found herself needing to complete it a certain number of pages. Therefore she threw three or four chapters together with the ending to all the issues in a few pages. I would not expect this from an award winning writer.

Those Christmas Angels

I was delighted by the characters and the plot of the book. This is my first Debbie Macomber book. I can tell that some of the characters had been introduced in previous books in the series but it didn't miss a beat. The story is self-contained and a stand alone book. The story made me laugh, cry, get angry and feel compassion. I will read other books by this author.

Anne Fletcher prays for peace in her life and love for her son, Roy, who had been hurt deeply by the betrayal of his father and Anne’s ex-husband. Dean Wilcoff starts a new job as head of security for Roy’s tech firm. Dean’s daughter Julie is a gym teacher who has a few unfortunate encounters with Roy. What seems an unlikely pair actually work, due to a little angelic intervention by the trio of angels known as Shirley, Goodness and Mercy.

Really sweet and lovely Christmas book. I read this in about a day or so and its about a woman who prays for her son to find someone to love again. That's when 3 angels Shirley, Mercy and Goodness come down to earth from heaven to help. The book was incredibly sweet and perfect to read during the holiday season. Recommend for anyone who likes Christmas stories and or Romance books.

This is a story about Julie and her father’s new boss, Roy. They keep running into each other, but don’t seem like one another one bit. This was a cute Christmas story. Unfortunately there were a couple of things that disappointed me since I thought Debbie was a Christian author. Overall it was a fun and light-hearted read.

A cute, fluffy, story for Christmas. Those crazy angels are at it again but that's what makes these books fun. As usual, the circumstances of the story are unbelievable and the timing nothing that could exist in reality, but that's okay in a little escape reading. I figure any of Debbie Macomber's books will have a good outlook on life and have a fairly good moral basis. Fun reading,

Such a fun read!

I have always loved this trio of mischievous angels and their antics! What great story for Christmas! Sometimes they over do it a little, I couldn’t fathom why salmon flying was helpful, other than to fall back on the analogy, but I really wouldn’t change a word of this book.

The story of 3 angels given assignments on earth to humans to answer prayers before the holidays. Challenges always present themselves, and sometimes angels have to be creative or mischievous in order to meet the humans prayer requests. The stories are lighthearted, refreshingly enticing to the desire effect of rooting for the angels to pull off the assignments before it’s too late.
