In a world of conflict in which religious differences play a significant role, reconciliation grows increasingly important. The Ministry of Reconciliation shows how with a spirituality of reconciliation we can create the spaces in which reconciliation can happen, and with human strategies, how the process of reconciliation can move forward. For all those working to overcome the effect of violence – whether in communities and societies, or even in neighborhoods and families – The Ministry of Reconciliation offers a sure guide and inspiration to the way of divine shalom.
I wish I had read this twenty-year old book ten years ago. Drawing on a reading of the Gospel resurrection narratives and a knowledge of the dynamics of individual and social conflicts, Fr. Schreiter presents an introduction to the spirituality of reconciliation and some strategies toward reconciliation. His reading of the resurrection stories develop a Christian understanding of reconciliation. Much of his analysis in Part I (spirituality of reconciliation) and the much too short Part II (strategies) is enhanced by his references to South Africa, El Salvador, Rwanda, and other places where there have been national reconciliation efforts. My only regret is that the book is so short. But I will return to this to study in depth - and also to help me prepare homilies next year during the Easter season.
I did not expect this book to be as good as it was. Schreiter packs a punch in this short little book. He uses the disciples' post-resurrection encounters with Jesus to illuminate strategies for walking with people through suffering toward reconciliation. I saw these stories that I've read or heard many times before through fresh eyes. There were several times when I said to myself, "I never thought about it like that before." Great read.
