An absolutely fabulous young persons story very much enjoyed by this not so young reader. Beautiful flow of words. Incredibly descriptive phrases. Absolutely cries out to be read aloud to let the words flow off the tongue, roll around in the mouth, tickle the taste buds and burst on the ears. I read it silently and then had to re-read it to myself out loud for the pleasure of the sounds and story. I hope many many many families continue to share this story, around a campfire, sitting together on a lounge, laying down at story time, anywhere.... Enjoy
Went looking for a picture of the cover, but couldn't find it, which doesn't bode well for me being able to find a copy of the book in a month's time. (Indigenous literacy day, a day on which Australian bookstores will be donating part of their proceeds to the Indigenous Literacy Project).
While not set out as a verse novel, I believe it is one. As I was reading through it there was a definite lilt (not surprising, as Gilbert was a poet). The poetry was irregular, but there, and makes me wonder why it wasn't emphasised in the layout.
The story is gorgeous, and beautifully told. It does seem to come from much further in the past (the time of gigs and sulkies, as Gilbert writes) than I thought Gilbert himself was, but that's probably just my own ignorance. I can't actually remember whether the text makes it clear that this is a little black boy we're reading about, but the illustrations (photographs by Eleanor Williams) make it very clear. Any indigenous children reading this book would feel *very* included in the story, especially little boys.
I'm really glad I happened across this one in the badly organised bins of children's books at the library.
5 out of 5 brilliant stars for a unique Australian tale. I remember all those things, like magic moths with rainbow wings and spider webs with pearly dew, but the memory I love most is when I was a little boy and used to play with my friend Mary Kangaroo... A celebration of a special friendship, Me and Mary Kangaroo is a story for all ages, a lyrical, moving tale to be shared again and again.' says the publishers blurb and can't agree more. This is a beautiful tale from the authors childhood and has been such a special book to share with my children.
