Pucked #0.5

Where It Begins

Rate this book
From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Helena Hunting comes a new story in her Pucked series. The untold story of Skye and Sidney, and the origin story where Vi and Miller are teens when their parents start dating and fall in love…

I accidentally grabbed the wrong drink at the coffee shop. On the upside, the hot guy it belonged to chased me down to kindly swap with me. On the down side, the reason I grabbed the wrong drink in the first place is because the hot guy had just caught me checking out his ass…sets.

In my defense, his rear view is rather magnificent.

In true, humiliating form, I word-vomited a bunch of horrible nonsense. Including an unnecessary explanation of the trauma I’d evaded thanks to his chasing me down. Nothing could ruin my lactose-intolerant day faster than my one true dairy.

I did not expect him to ask me out on a date after that.

I also didn’t expect the date to go well since my tendency to truth-vomit is high, and not everyone finds that quality endearing.

But apparently he does. Because he asks me out again.
And again.

Sidney Butterson (yes, it’s a weird last name) ticks all my boxes.
He's smart, he's funny, he's employed and he's ridiculously hot.
There’s one catch.

We’re both single parents. With teens.

And if our kids don’t like each other?
Well, we’re doomed.

This is the story that I didn't know I needed until it pulled me in. This is truly where it all began and it is magnificent!

I loved having a birds eye view of watching Skye and Sidney fall in love. Unsurprisingly, there is instant chemistry and the sexual compatibility is ridiculous.

Loved this!

Skye + Sidney

They meet(cute) in a coffee shop in Chicago.
Insta attraction. But they're not in their twenties anymore. People their age don't just date, right?
Both are also single parents to a teenager.
Sidney is a hockey scout and his son is about to be a hockey pro. And Skye kinda hates everyting about hockey due to her baby daddy being a douche canoe ex hockey pro.
And also what if their kids won't get along - they can't start anything without the kids approval.

Adorable!

We didn't know we needed this little prequel!
It was so cute and funny and just perfect.
Skye is so much like our Vi! Just as clumsy and crazy and adorable!
Sidney is mega DILFy in all the ways!
And Vi and Miller as teenies. Adorbs!
This is a super cute extra for allPucked fans. And it's also a cute little love story for everybody who has never read a Pucked book before. Read them now!

WHERE IT BEGINS was a super cute and funny and adorable little PUCKED series prequel novella. For all fans and those who will be fans soon!

Skye Hall is a senior accountant at a great firm in Chicago. She's been with them nearly fifteen years, and loves her job. She has a quirky, responsible mathlete daughter that is almost sixteen, and is her entire world. As a single mom to a teen her main focus has been raising her daughter. She hasn't been on a date in ages, and sometimes gets a little lonely. Then one day she meets an extremely attractive man at a cafe and suddenly she's excited to get to know him. Who knew grabbing the wrong latte could change your life. Sidney Butterson was a pro hockey scout and just her type. He was kind, gorgeous, and didn't mind her lack of verbal filter. The only problem was he was also a single parent to a teen, so finding alone time seemed impossible. She finds him endlessly intriguing, and wants to try to have something real. Will things get too complicated, or will they get their happy ending?

Where It Begins by Helena Hunting is an all new standalone, 1001 Dark Nights, Pucked Series Novella. It's the untold story of Skye and Sidney, and the origin story where Vi and Miller are teens when their parents start dating and fall in love. This was the perfect prequel, and teenage Violet and Buck were hilarious. It was funny to see where Vi gets her no filter from. She is so much like her mom. I adored this steamy short story! It was a fabulous single parents, second chances, sports romance full of humor, sizzling chemistry and all the feels! <333

This book was so much fun! Pucked fans are absolutely going to devour it, and if you haven’t read Pucked you can truly start at the beginning when Vi and Miller are teens (hero of book 2 and heroine of books 1 in the Pucked world).

I absolutely loved seeing these two characters as teens and Sydney and Skye fall in love. It was cute, hilarious, and had bits of steam. Seeing them became a family, though, was probably my favorite part!

Definitely a fun and quick must read!

If you’ve been through the whole Pucked series you already know about step siblings Violet and Miller, but this is about their parents and how they met. When I say Violet is EXACTLY like her mother Skye that’s an understatement. They’re the same personality - which is not necessarily a bad thing but they’re quite clumsy together. Sidney is a DILF. End of story. 😮‍💨

Oh my god! Finally!!! We get Buck and Violet’s parents story!

I am absolutely blown away by this one. I mean I knew I loved them already but this book just made me love them more especially with how alike Vi and Skye are. I absolutely love their no filter, had me laughing so much!

Skye is a sweet, loving and fun mom. She’s her daughter’s best friend and confidant. She’s there when she needs her and helps in any way she can.

Sidney, oh that guy. He gave me all the feels. He’s kind and patient and is exactly what Skye deserves. He’s the perfect kind of boyfriend that you just can’t help but fall for him. His relationship with Miller is tight and supportive and gah! I absolutely loved every moment.

I don’t want to spoil anything but would this series be complete if a spider wasn’t included in a Butterson book? HAHA.

Anyhoo, I absolutely loved that Vi and Miller connected from the get go and how supportive they were too, made me so so happy!

I never have to doubt I’m going to enjoy a Helena Hunting book because this author smashes it every single time.

The Pucked series has been on my TBR for years and I’m so glad I picked this prequel novella up! I enjoyed the heck out of this story and read it in just one sitting.

Skye and Sidney’s love story was full of humor, and had some steam too! I was laughing from the very beginning and loved watching these two come together and become a happy couple and more importantly a happy family.

I’m already invested in Vi and Miller’s story and will be diving into book 1 in the series soon! If you’re like me and haven’t read the series yet, or if you have read it, this novella is for everyone! Such an enjoyable quick read!

Oh, this is one of the stories you never knew you'll need until you read them. When reading the Pucked series, it never occurred to me that Sidney and Skye might have also a great story to tell.

Usually I'm not a fan of novellas, I always get the feeling they are too short, that something is missing etc. But Skye and Sidney's story is perfect for this. I didn't miss a thing and I enjoyed every moment. I loved their meet-cute and how Sidney fell first (at least I think he did ;-)). And I love how we get to see Violet and Miller in their teens and also some times their POV in this story.

If you are a fan of the Pucked series, and if you love Violet as much as I do, this is definitely THE book for you!

Thank you Helena, for giving us Skye and Sidney's funny and adorable story!

Quickie review:

3.5 stars. This story was cute, but kind of bland and lacking in chemistry. The couple was late thirties/early forties and they acted like they were ancient. It was not a bad book though, just not my favorite by Ms. Hunting.

ARC kindly received for an honest review.

I loved this - I never would've really thought about reading a book about Skye and Sidney, but of course when the opportunity came up, I couldn't resist, because I love the Pucked world. This was actually a lot of fun and really sweet - I enjoyed all the bits, and especially the Vi and Miller ones. Highly recommend this - if you know me, you know I don't always do well with novella's - but this one was perfect - it was long enough that it didn't feel rushed or without detail, and I just really enjoyed the storyline and what's really the beginnings of where the Pucked world began.

Skye and Sidney!!! Omg it was so great to be back in the Pucked world and I loved this novella. It was great to see Violet and Miller as teenagers and how their personalities melded into their later years. The spice was fantastic and the level of ridiculous banter was classic Helena Hunting, meaning it was fabulous. I loved the alternating POV's and I just had a great time reading this. Thank you to Helena Hunting for the e-ARC to read and review!

5 stars!!

I absolutely loved being back in the Pucked world and seeing where it all begins with Violet's mom, Skye, and Miller's dad, Sidney.  These two share a sweet meet cute when Skye takes the wrong drink at a coffee shop. Sidney follows Skye to mention the mistake and what follows is a sweet, funny love story that gave me something I didn't know I needed from this series.

Skye and Sidney are so cute together. From their first interaction I could tell there was a connection and Skye and her word vomit made me laugh so hard. I loved how Sidney kept pursuing her even when life and kids got in the way. Their relationship forms organically and I loved watching them get to know each other, and the sexual tension is off the charts because they just can’t find time to seal the deal. With all the hilarious interruptions, I enjoyed the buildup to when they finally get to the physical stuff.

I love Skye and Sidney’s relationships with their kids and their honest and open conversations. They both are able to parent in ways that let Miller and Violet know that they are loved but also give them wonderful role models.  I loved the way they handle situations with the kids and how real they are with them. I also loved that they took into consideration how the kids felt about their relationship.

Overall, I loved it. I love all the humor laced throughout and the sweet moments between not only Skye and Sidney but with their children. I adored seeing Violet and Miller as teens and how their friendship began, and we even got to see teen Randy, too.

Cocktails and Books received this book for free from in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect our opinion of the book or the content of our review.I adored everything about novella.  The way Skye and Sidney met.  How adorable they were together.  And teenage Violet and Buck.  I ❤ ️EVERYTHING!   But there were a few things that I stuck out

Sidney and Skye - Their kids were their world, but thanks to picking up the wrong cup of coffee, they found their person.  They didn't let a series of comical mishaps, but life with teenagers, get in the way of their relationship.  Like adults, they took a step back when they needed to, but never gave up on each other.
Violet - The apple clearly doesn't fall far from the tree, but I was so happy to see a teenage Violet's filter was missing even then.  She was unapologetically nerdy.
Buck - The transformation of Miller to Buck....now it makes sense
The wedding....I'm so glad for the epilogue.  We knew why Violet broke out into hives at the mere though of a wedding.  Buck shared the story.  But "seeing" it happen and knowing Buck "saved" her made me love their relationship a little bit more.

If you love the Pucked series, this novella is a must read.  Brings everything full circle and will make you want to pick up Pucked and meet adult Violet all over again.

Where It Begins was a very entertaining and cute read! I loved being able to see how Skye and Sidney met and fell in love! They have their differences personality wise, but they compliment each other well. They were meant to be. Skye is clearly Violet's mom. They both suffer from word vomit/having no filter, clumsiness, and their lactose intolerance. They're a highly entertaining mother-daughter duo. Sidney is a great dad to Miller, even when Miller makes it quite difficult on him. I really enjoyed getting several chapters from both Violet and Miller, that added even more enjoyment to the novella. It was a great story, I couldn't see it happening any other way for them. *I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.*

This is the prequel novella of how Vi & MIller’s parents met and they all became one happy, eccentric family. When Skye Hall accidentally grabs the wrong drink, she meets a handsome man named Sidney Butterson. Two single parents, hockey, some funny interactions and a love that created the beginning of a beautiful life. This is such a fun romcom and yes, we get teenage Vi, Miller and Randy too!! Skye is so much like Vi it’s hilarious. I could not stop laughing throughout! Fall in love with these amazing characters all over again. A Definite Top Read of 2023! Told in dual PO

Skye is raising her super responsible teenager and is kicking butt in general. When she happens to take someone else’s drink at the coffee shop, Sidney comes into her life. And we ALL need a Sidney!

He’s raising his hockey-playing teenage son alone after his wife passed. Skye may word vomit everywhere but he’s found her endearing and intriguing.

I flew through Where It Begins and now I need to read the Pucked series!! What really did it for me was both the realness of the single parents trying to date and the humor. I smiled and laughed out loud a few times. I’m sure many will relate to the teenager-y situations!

I’ve love Helena Hunting’s books previously and Where It Begins has me wanting to jump back in! Highly recommended.

Thank you to the publisher for the opportunity to read this book. The review expresses my own opinions.

wow this story is the perfect complement to the Pucked series, when I read the first book in the series I was so curious about Sidney and Skye and teenage Violet and Buck, and I loved reading their story.

Sidney is so sweet and attentive and such a good dad, Skye made me laugh so much with her lack of filter when speaking and her clumsiness, their scenes are hilarious and sexy and left me with a smile on my face. It was so fun, and Violet and Skye together are so hilarious! I love them so much

Where It Begins is the perfect way to start this series, it made me laugh out loud and entertained me from start to finish. Super recommended for fans of Helena Hunting and this series.

“Every time I see you, you’re more beautiful than the last,” he murmurs.
“And every time I see you, I want to get you naked,” I blurt.

4.75 smutty stars

“I’ve been looking for you for a long time.”

First off, let me tell you, the spice was spicing, so, um, here are some, ahem, quotes.

I’ve been dealing with a half hard-on the entire drive, so the second the vehicle is in park, I wrench the door open. “Leave everything. We’ll deal with it after I’ve fucked at least two orgasms out of you.”

“Good fucking God, the way you look right now,” he makes a deep sound in the back of his throat and the right side of my mouth curls up. He doesn’t look like the sweet, polite man who snuggled with me on the couch last night. He looks like he wants to devour me.
I pop off again—“And how do I look?”—before I cover the head once more.
Like those pretty lips of yours were made to be wrapped around my cock.

🥵️

This was exactly what I was hoping for in Sidney and Skye’s story! Skye is basically Violet in terms of everything and I was living for it (I guess Violet is Skye since Skye is her mom, but you get the point). I don’t normally go for the single parent and second chances trope, but I love all of Helena’s stuff, so there was no way I passing on this one!

Skye delicately lifts one of the calamari rings with her fork and inspects it for a moment. “Sort of looks like a deep-fried cock ring, doesn’t it?”

I adored their little meet-cute, even tho Sid had noticed her before, which so cute, and Skye’s absolute awkwardness about anything and everything. She is completely unfiltered and it was just perfection.

Buck, being the ridiculously agile and not-clumsy soon-to-be-stepbrother that he is, picks me up and sets me on my feet, then hands me my glasses.
“Thanks. I wish my feet were better at their job.”

Getting to meet young Violet and Buck was everything! They were so amazing, Buck was such a sensitive muffin for certain things, and we get to see the scene that’s mentioned in Pucked, where Buck “hits” on Violet and that whole scene was great.

“Oh wow,” I mutter. “He cleans up nice.”
Dad squeezes my arm. “Inside voice, Skye. Everyone can hear you.”
I shrug. “Looking good, babe!” I call down the aisle.

This review is pointless, it’s just me saying “the book was great” which means you have to read this book, then go read the Pucked universe as well!

Thank you so much to 1001 Dark Nights Press and the author for providing me with an early copy in exchange for an honest review!!

I love how Helena knew I needed this story before I knew I needed it, and now I’m so glad to have another piece of one of my all time favorite series!

Of course it was amazing and hilarious to see Violet and Miller as teenagers, but Skye and Sidney’s love story really did steal the show. It was so sweet to see these single parents figure things out, and how Sidney loved Skye and all her craziness.

This book is a novella but with the way their relationship progressed it felt like a full length book. It’s light and funny and whether you are a long time fan of the series or this is your first taste, this is a cute story you don’t want to miss!

Beginning to love!

When Skye picks up the wrong drink in the cafe, Sydney chases her down to give her the right one. Both feel the attraction that wants to burst forth. As they start to date, they both worry their teenage children won't get along.
I adore Helena Hunting and the Pucked series so it was a dream to finally have Skye and Sydney's story. It was both sweet and hilarious, the chemistry was scalding but the romance was sugary sweet. I loved Violet and Miller becoming siblings and the hilarity of the party! Thanks Helena for such a brilliant read

Skye and Sidney origin story? Sold.

Loved reading how Skye (Violet’s mom from Pucked) and Sidney (Miller/Buck’s dad from Pucked Up) met and fell in love. We hear so much about them over the course of the series so I was able to read this thru 1001 Dark Nights’ Hearts and Hidden Secrets anthology. This was really cute and you got POVs from Skye, Sidney as well as a teenage Violet and Miller.

The Pucked series is one of my favorites and I highly recommend the whole thing if you are into funny, spicy, hockey romances starting with a totally filter free FMC via Pucked.

Why did I wait so long to read this?! I freaking love Sidney and Skye so so much! Their relationship is funny, spicy and super entertaining. Their chemistry is fantastic and I really enjoyed getting to see two single parents of teenagers try to navigate that. Their story just warms my little heart. Getting to see teenage Violet and Miller was such a hoot too! This makes me want to go back to the Pucked world so bad!
