Mick Murphy’s an Irish half-elf from Manhattan. His best buddy Dave is a dwarf from Brooklyn. Together with a company of misfits, screwballs and, well, trolls from the pit, they’ll take on anything Austro-Hungaro-Roumania, or for that matter Hell itself, cares to throw at them. But behind the vampires, werewolves and sky demons are the Big Boys, deep down in a pit of their own. The War won’t end until G.I.s plant their boots on the Devil’s throne and kick him out. Working their way up to this biggest of D-Days is going to tax the United States Army to its utmost … but the dogfaces on the Line are one step ahead of the brass, because they’re already halfway to Hell.
An enjoyable book about a World War being fought between elves, humans, Germans, Americans, dwarves, and vampires. There's a lot of World War 2 tropes even though there's no Nazis and I had a lot of fun reading the book.
Hard to think of it as a first book. Non-Stop action, good characterization, excellent pacing, top world-building. Alternative universe from us, where feys are there, where, there is one evil empire supported by undead and confronting the rest of the world and where Sergeant Murphy, a half-elf, is in charge of a recn company. Yes, you read me right, a sergeant in charge of a company. Shows how rough the going went before the stories begin. So we are in the Alps, Sgt Murphy and his troop are tasked with scouting a location and well... read the book! :)
I really had a blast discovering the universe. As I progressed in the book I enjoyed the many twists of the story!
Really looking for the 2d installment of this series, as it all ends up in a cliffhanger in a quite unhospitable place.
