Will Isla’s magical whip and her budding romance with her future werewolf mate be enough to help her save the worlds from bloodthirsty monsters?
Disciplined, strong, and skilled with her magical whip, Isla Bane was raised far away from prying human eyes, among the male wolves of her pack. But the future she has always imagined, as the Alpha of her pack, becomes nothing more than fantasy when her grandfather interrupts her morning coffee to tell her she is to be mated to the infamous womanizer Axel Griffith – the heir to the wealthy Shadow Pack. As she joins the Shadow Pack in preparation for the mating ceremony, her feelings for Axel grow unexpectedly fast, as does the threat from the insane and bloodthirsty Crazed Otherworlders. Faced with this deadly and suddenly organized enemy, Isla and Axel need to trust each other with their world-altering secrets and overcome their stubborn attitudes if they want to save their packs and the world order Isla was Chosen to protect – even if no one else can be trusted.
Supernatural - Wolves I love the effortless writing style of this author. It was an easy glide through romance read. I like the concept of arranged marriage for the wolf shape shifters. As always, it is nice to read a series that I know there is more of.
Romance, mystery, intrigue entwined in an enjoyable fantasy
This tale is not as farfetched as one would think. It’s how nations’ fates were determined in days gone by.
A marriage was arranged between the piously dutiful Isabella of Castile and the philandering Ferdinand of Aragon when they were in their teens. In that manner, Spain was born. The Islamic occupation of the southeast tip of Europe was finally defeated, and a glorious empire was forged.
Four hundred years before, another unlikely union was arranged between a lowly, coarse Duke of Viking blood and Matilda the refined, condescending granddaughter of the King of France. As a result, Normandy became the dominant powerhouse of politics and culture in the West. Danelaw was finally expunged from Britain, the Saxons were Romanized, and through the Norman colonies in Southern Italy and in Palestine, the overrunning of the vulnerable West by the all-conquering Islamic armies that would have taken over Christendom was checked for another hundred years. Western civilization was thereby saved. Moreover, these two improbable but fateful marriages were to make an immense contribution to Western culture, setting the stage for the Renaissance, which remains the high watermark of Western culture.
The theme of this story is the same albeit presented in a paranormal setting with werewolves, demons, vampires, et al.
A marriage is arranged between two reluctant and incompatible successors of two tribes, the proud and resourceful Isla of the midnight pack and the sensual Axel of the shadow pack. This is concocted for the mutual benefit of the respective tribes and for the defense of the Realm ( in which the otherworlders thrive among the humans) against the Crazed and Eric the Red’s nefarious ambitions from the underworld. So, these two protagonists put aside their pride and prejudices in the interest of the common good and for the preservation of their bloodlines.
Talking about bloodlines, none could be more durable than those of William the Conqueror. His surprisingly happy marriage produced ten offspring and his bloodline was to run through that of every royal family in Europe up to modern times. In this story, it is summed up as follows:
Rattenru nodded. “A worthy mate for a worthy princess. Together you will be great leaders, writing history together.”
I find the paranormal context fascinating, even though this is not my particular genre. A Werewolves is a metaphorical figure for the human personality in which both good and bad traits coexist within each of us. The constant subconscious wrestling of good with bad defines who we are. This generates conflict and tension inside and between characters to which any reader can relate. The struggle between the human and bestial traits within the werewolves is a spinoff from Robert Louis Stevenson’s popular classic.
Because of the romance, the novel has commercial appeal. It starts with some exposition about the milieu and protagonists, defining the stakes of the quest. But things heat up quickly at the coming-out reception which is ambushed. From then on, the author never lets off.
It is an enjoyable read and be prepared for surprises on the way. I was amused by Isla’s mind-reading abilities reminding me of Mel Gibson’s “What women want” comedy. And who cannot relate to the following quote:
It was a relief to find herself around someone who was not thinking one thing and saying another.
I detest it when writers in this category hesitate to depict passionate scenes; the embarrassment always comes out in the writing. However, Arrange Matting: Otherworlders by Chris Rogers was a different experience; the author has a gift for illustrating lovely and heartwarming romantic scenes, and It's been a while since I've seen a perfect sassy and spunky heroine as well.
All species have been on alert as dangerous extraterrestrial beings have emerged from underground. To increase their defense, Winston Bane (Alpha of the Midnight pack) and Garret Griffith (Alpha of the Shadow pack) must cooperate. They arranged a matting between the two successors from the two packs; Isla from the Midnight pack and Alex from the shadow pack. Isla's grandfather, Winston, reared her as a fighter after she lost her parents in an unexpected attack. In order to become the leader of her pack, she must mate with Alex, who is quite the opposite of her and well-known among ladies.
Alex belongs to a wealthy society known for its extravagant parties and way of life. Before approving the matting, Alex's parents planned a gathering to learn more about Isla and her personality. Since Isla didn't have a firm grasp on how she should act before she could ultimately mate with Alex and take charge of her pack; she must go through a period of testing and her biggest weapons are an enchanted whip and her confidence.
I was hooked tight on the story up until the halfway mark, and then the pace started slowing. I enjoyed all the tensions and excitement between Alex and Isla before their first night together. But gradually, they shifted from their original characteristics; for a few facts, I loved the changes, and for a few, I didn’t. I loved how the author pulled out the real woman from Isla despite her original tough and warrior characteristics. The twist in Alex’s character impressed me as well. But I found it difficult to relate to the main character’s POV of other characters, for example, Duke, at first disrespects women and Alex thinks of kicking his ass, but a few chapters down he was giving lessons to Isla and fighting alongside Alex.
However, the novella was a different experience for me, the author tried and explored the plot in a different way. I loved how the details were depicted and helped texture the plot. My attention was particularly drawn to and I adored the sexual moments, which epitomized the author's writing style. They were described in both forms — physically and psychologically which made them very engaging.
I would happily give Arranged Matting, Otherworlders a rating of five out of five if the supportive characters were a bit more broadly illustrated. However, I enjoyed reading the book and it kept me entertained till the culmination point. Anyone who loves this subgenre would definitely love this book and find a new taste for sure. Part two will be an interesting read!
The story is captivating, you end up wishing it would continue in a sequel, so I hope the writer will eventually give us one. When Isla, a female werewolf, is forced by her alpha into an arranged marriage, her personal feelings suddenly become part of a play of power and intrigue, and she must use her resources as a warrior to save herself and the people she loves. It’s a classic urban fantasy, with the classic presence of fairies and vampires in addition to the focus on werewolves. It is endearing in the development of the characters – the main characters are complex and likeable -- and it progresses through both tense moment, dangerous turns, and emotional weaving. It has also a great balance of romance, eroticism, and action, so that none of these three aspects feel overwhelming to me as a reader. Overall, I much enjoyed this book.
I was looking forward to reading this on my phone and on my Kindle, but the formatting, the font was too small and there were so many elements in a page when reading on Kindle that the screen would turn bright white as it refreshed when I move to the next page. That was bothersome even I was on dark mode. The reading experience did not flow well so that is why I am getting it a four. The story is fantastical and fun but the formatting on Kindle ruined the reading experience.
I really enjoyed this paranormal shifter romance. I was immediately drawn into the story and became hooked until I finished it. I've read a few shifter romances and this is by far one of the best. The main characters, Isla and Axel, were interesting, and the story was compelling. I would love to read more from this writer.
I really enjoyed this read. The wolves and humans procreating. Not actual wolves but the best within man. I look forward to reading more from the author.
