This book caught my attention because I had read The Cross and the Switchblade many years ago, and I was interested in learning more about David Wilkerson. The title gave me pause because it sounded a little too much like idolizing a man. However, the book does not do that at all, and it quotes Scripture in which Paul tells us to imitate him as He imitates Christ. The author has great admiration and respect for David Wilkerson, but he doesn't put him on a pedestal. He even says that Pastor Dave was good at knocking himself off pedestals other people often put him on.
The faith of David Wilkerson, his brother Don, other people involved in the ministries, and the author himself is inspiring and their prayer lives amazing. One time, and if I recall correctly it was before he started preaching, the author and a couple of other guys working as custodians and security at the church, prayed for almost 24 hours straight! He emphasized over and over again the importance of prayer to a successful ministry, indeed to a successful Christian life.
This is an account of one man's relationship with David Wilkerson. I've enjoyed listening to recordings of Pastor Dave over the years and this book reveals the heart of the man. Full of meaningful quotes.
Many have heard some or part of the legacy of David Wilkerson and the Times Square Church. Some of us have read his book or seen the movie adaptation, "The Cross and the Switchblade". I came across this book and thought I needed to read it. To hear the story told from a man who served alongside David Wilkerson during his tenure a Times Square. I was also interested in the prayer ministry of Charles Simpson and tales from his personal prayer life. While this book isn't a "how to" book I found it refreshing and reassuring to read some of his accounts of how God used his prayers, the prayers of the many prayer warriors of Times Square Church and those of David Wilkerson to further His kingdom. In today's world with so much of society becoming anti-God, it is frightening. Not for myself, but how do you throw a lifesaver to a world drowning in their own sin and watch it ignore or reject it? The only one who can rescue the souls of man from eternal damnation is Jesus Christ and to be used of Him requires one thing. A personal relationship with Him through prayer.
I so enjoy reading about David Wilkerson; an amazing man of the Christian faith and this work of words uncovering behind the scenes; a peep if you will from the eyes of a man disciplined by Dave Wilkerson himself.
This legacy of David Wilkerson, the Times Square Church, and Teen Challenge has touched the lives of tens of thousands, and you and I have the privilege to walk with Charles Simpson as he learned from a man that walked the journey he taught.
The depth of prayer examples, outreach, and displays of faith so amazing before a complicated world laying before our feet a lovely display of Christlikeness to learn from.
This is an easy read, but the content will be everlasting in your spirit, drawing you closer towards a more intimate relationship with God.
I absolutely loved this book. I loved seeing how Pastor David Wilkerson was honest about His humanity and always pointed his followers to Christ. I appreciated the fact that prayer was number 1 in his life. May I also one day give my life for others like he did. I have owned the cross and switchboard for years but I've never read it. I think it's time to do just that and be about the business my Father has for me.
Though readers get only glimpses of David Wilkerson, Times Square Church and the Teen Challenge Ministry, Charles Simpson has his own story to tell as a man of God, from a humble upbringing in Tennessee to NYC, the Big Apple. It is a compelling story of faith, spiritual growth and most importantly the necessity of prayer. My own faith was strengthened by reading this insightful story of what God can do in a life committed to Him.
David Wilkerson's walk of faith is such an inspiration to me. I was young in my faith as his ministry began and followed his teaching in those year's. It was good to be reminded of his journey and read of just a few he influenced and know how many more came to faith in Jesus Christ through his/ their mi nistry. I would recommend to anyone who wants to be both encouraged and challenged in their own walk of faith.
Outstanding book reviewing the life of a so!d out country preacher!
I remember hearing about Dave Wilkerson when he was a pastor n Phillipsburg, PA. and his calling to go to New York city. West Side Story had a great impact on me as a teenager and he is the one who led Nicky Cruz to Christ. This book is so good, I am telling everyone they need to read it. It will deepen your own faith and hopefully ignite a fire in your heart. A must read.
I was moved by the depth of faith of the author, his subject (David Wilkerson), and others mentioned in the book. I have become lukewarm, and this book convicted me to return to my First Love ... to seek His face, trust in His promises, and love those He loves ... go after the one, leaving the 99.
I read "The Cross and the Switchblade" many years ago and was amazed by what David Wilkerson did in the streets of New York City . This book showed me that there is more to ministry than I have ever dreamed. There is so much in this book that I will surely be referring to from now on. Thank you for writing this book. It came at the right time.
It is not often that one finds a person who is willing and honored to play second fiddle. It has been a blessing to read this book and see it through the author ‘s eyes and his experience. It a real challenge to return to the prayer closet consistent. May the Lord continue to bless this man, a true son of the Wilkerson legacy.
The challenges, the dedication, the prayers are so inspiring for a simple believer like me to follow their footsteps. Awesome and thank you for writing all of your experience s.
Charles Simpson wrote the book to honor his Mentor and friend David Wilkerson. He also tells his own story. This book is a call to prayer and for others to look for their gift and calling to continue the walk of those who went before us.
Highlights the power of prayer and how God works in these Spirit filled men! Having grown up hearing about David Wilkersons ministry, it was interesting to read some of what went on behind the scenes
Un libro inspirador de fácil lectura y sobre todo honesto. Nos permite un acercamiento a uno de los líderes cristianos cuya labor por la causa de Cristo fue más que meritoria y digna de recordar e imitar. Dios, mándanos más David Wilkerson.
I love reading about David Wilkerson, this was another piece of the jigsaw that lets us look into how this man was. Although this book is about Charles Simpsons life and ministry, his life is interwoven with David Wilkerson and you really get a great sense of the heart of David and his kindness. I enjoyed reading this book, I enjoyed stirring the memories of David Wilkerson the man of God who is now no longer living by faith but living by sight with Jesus.
