Selected bibliography of sources, print and Internet sources for further reading, index.

This biography presents Anne Frank's life simply (it has a reading level of 3.0) and truthfully. The book covers Anne's early years in Germany, the family's move to Amsterdam and the emerging political storm, the gift of the diary, the Secret Annex, the discovery of the annex by Nazi soldiers, and the tragic outcome. We learn about the discovery and publication of the diary and its impact on the world. Photographs, a timeline, and sidebars communicate the horrors of the time without graphic photos.

Unfortunately, some design elements significantly denigrate the book's appeal. The most jarring examples are the illustrations introducing each chapter. The second chapter, “Escape from Germany,” is prefaced with a drawing of Anne playing dolls with friends; this peaceful scene does not suggest the imminence of a forced exodus. Two other chapters are introduced with out-of-sync illustrations. The illustrations, moreover, are products of the unnamed illustrator's imagination and do not originate from actual photographs. These illustrations fail to convey Anne's beauty and charm. While the events in the timeline at the back of the book are accurate, the text colors are confusing. Events appear in either blue or red type, with no explanation of these colors' significance. The book also has a few typos. Three website addresses are listed as sources of additional information. One website is easy to navigate and contains engaging photographs; the other two websites, however, are difficult to navigate to and through.
The bottom line: I like the text, but the annoying distractions diminish the quality of the work. Overpriced at $27.93, this is an optional selection. I would purchase Josephine Poole's Anne Frank and David Adler's A Picture Book of Anne Frank before this version.
