Human Body is a concise guide to the structure, functions, and disorders of the body. Using full-color, highly detailed illustrations and clear, accessible language, this book is a fascinating introduction to how the body works and what may go wrong. The first part, Anatomy of the Human Body, begins with a medical atlas that shows how the parts of the body fit together. Each individual body system -- such as the skeletal and digestive systems -- is then fully illustrated and explained in detail. A compelling section on the human life cycle examines the changes in the body from conception to old age. In the second part of the book, Diseases and Disorders, some of the most common disorders are described and illustrated, system by system, with explanations of exactly what goes wrong and why. Medical conditions covered include infections, injuries, and cancer. Finally, there is a concise glossary of medical terms.
I like the part that says. "On the outside, you are dead. Your hair and the surface of your skin are made of dead cells. But less than a milimeter away under the surface of your skin are some of the businiest cells in your body. They are contianually dividing to make new layers of skin cells which harden and die, to replace the top layer of skin as it is worn away. Every day millions of dea skin cells rush off as you wash, dry yourself with a towel, get dressed and move about. Much of the "dust" in a housue is dead skin which has rubbed off the bodies of people."(1998,p10)
Great book if you want to understand the basics of how the human body works. Beautiful illustrations and easy-to-follow descriptions of all of the basic components of the human body. Good for students, or for people who are just curious about anatomy, and want a beautiful book that can answer quite a few of their questions about both the internal and external aspects of the human body.
7/10 This little book is beautifully illustrated. But it was a very heavy read that it took me years to finish it. Almost 25% of the book was about diseases. It wasn't exactly a pleasure to end the book with those morbid pages. And it wasn't an uplifting experience to read this book after the age of forty.
I took a Health Sciences course in collage and my main text was huge!. This little book contains most of the information of that book in the form of notes in comparison, very handy. Compared a lot of the information just to verify, and all the terms are correct that I've found thus far. Very happy with my purchase from Coles :).
Great, colorful illustrations, but I wish the writing wasn't quite so technical. The assumption seems to be that I already have some background in anatomy, but I really don't.
Wonderful piece and I believe it is a must as reference for anyone. Surprisingly I enjoyed to a great extent .. Would categorize it under educational books. I do Recommend !
