This penultimate story arc in the Case Files of Lord El Melloi II revolves around Waver and Gray returning to Gray's hometown, which finally explains why he recruited her to be his assistant in the first place, and more importantly explains Gray's overall purpose. And that part of the story is quite interesting and fucked up, but ends up becoming overly complicated due to the involvement of the Atlas Institute, one of the three branches of the Mages' Association, which I originally learned about in Grand Order.

While the presence of the institute is relatively small, it's still the main driving force behind the overall conflict, and I'm still not sure how it was supposed to help accomplish a certain goal, namely .

Especially since its presence seemed completely unnecessary, since it couldn't fix the one issue that needed to be solved to achieve the intended outcome

This could be an issue with the fan translation, though, since at least these two volumes were translated by someone who clearly doesn't seem fluent in Japanese, and in one translation note even mentions DeepL, which was perhaps used to translate the novel. This would also explain why there are many notes in which the translator expresses confusion about what the author was trying to say or offers pointless alternate translations. But what I found even more annoying was the translator constantly commenting on what's happening in the story, which added absolutely nothing of value and eventually resulted in me skipping every single translator note.

Really wish these light novels had an official translation so I wouldn't have to deal with this. And I also hope that the same person didn't translate the last three volumes. I understand that it can be annoying for there to be no official translation, but releasing a fan translation if you don't even understand the original language properly is a terrible idea. Do it for yourself if you must, but releasing it to the public might stifle any attempts to release a proper translation later on.
