Roy J. Reiman was an American philanthropist and publicist who was the founder of Reiman Publications based in Greendale, Wisconsin, which is best known for its country-oriented magazines, books, and other home products. Reiman is credited with building the country's largest, private, subscription-based publishing company. In 2003, it was reported that one out of every eight households in the United States subscribed to a Reiman magazine. He was named publisher of the year in 1991 by Magazine Weekly and Wisconsin's Master Entrepreneur in 1992. Reiman Publications, now affiliated with the Reader's Digest Corporation, currently publishes thirteen national consumer magazines, including Taste of Home, the most popular cooking magazine worldwide.
I might be a little bias, but this book is a fantastic read. Reiman does a phenomenal job describing each phase of his life and the rise of Reiman Publications, all the way from the basement to board room. Would definitely recommend this book to anyone in search of a business memoir focused on entrepreneurship and crazy ideas.
This is the single best business book I've ever read. The story of how Roy Reiman built his magazine empire, starting in the basement of his home, pounding away on a manual typewriter set on a TV tray table, is fascinating. In addition to the rags-to-riches story, what makes this book really stand out as a business book is how the author lets us in on his thought processes in overcoming the problems and obstacles he faced at various stages of building his business. The solutions Reiman comes up with really show his outside-the-box, creative thinking process, especially in light of the fact that this was all done before the age of the internet. If you're starting a business and can read only one book, this is the book for you.
Roy Riemann tells how he started his publishing empire. Unlike other magazines Reiman magazines have no advertising. All costs are covered by subscriptions and by auxiliary sales.
Inspirational. I have bought extra copies of this book and given them to many others in the industry. Also a great read before you start down the path of selling your own company.
I liked learning what creativity Roy has and his drive. At first it was too much detail and all about business, which I hadn't expected. Later I got to enjoy it more.
